  • Relic Wines Ritual 2007.

A Rhone blend made by Mikr Hirby (winemaker for Realm) with Robin Cooper in the tasting trailer at Erna Schein.

Light red. Burg style look. Starts with a hint of earth then the great raspberry fruit one expects with Grenache. Turns out this wine has Mouvedre as the front grape. None of the nasty reduction one could expect. Just comes out of the bottle ready to love.

  • Hang on. I forgot the Cayuse Cahmberlain 2005.

Would kill to be on their list. theirs and Drinkward.Deep red. A fantastic nose of blood, meat, blueberries and black pepper. There was definetly some leather and red fruit notes as well. Very nice rich flavours but not really sweet at all. Long dry finish. The tannins were there but very fine. Just a fantastic wine.

    Cayuse En Chamberlain` 2005.

Gary – just wanted to come out from lurking and say this was a great show. Keep ’em coming. As far as cult wine goes, the closest I’ve come is 2005 Hartwell Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Its in the Cellar, but not in my mouth…yet.

Thanks a million for the education and opinion.

Gary, you had me giggling at your descriptions. I have to admit though, sometimes thing taste a little earthy..

2004 Chateau Palmer. Maybe not a cult wine but this is an epiphany wine that would surely convert the non believer. One of the most balanced and elegant wines that has ever crossed my palate. In Canada this is a $200.00 bottle and worth every last dime. Gary, If you happen to read this I really miss being able to email you and receive a response like the good old days.

Tx for the wristband! How did I qualify?
Can’t wait to wipe some wine off my chin with it.
We had some Cuda Ridge from Livermore this weekend. Twas a lovely Merlot. We were the first ones to buy from them at their new winery. They signed our bottles and we signed the first dollar to hang on their wall.

Tried Merry Edwards’ Sav Blanc 2008. Last year was scored 96 by WS, the highest score ever given to the variety. The one that I had (2008) was a good balance between Loire and New Zealand. Very viscous, citrusy, stone fruity but not too too much, the end is very long and very unexpectedly dry and grainy. Quite an interesting number. Score 92+. At $30 a fairly good value for the wine that has such a great reputation.

Gary – shout out from France! Love your show and have been a long-time Vayniak. Am really appreciating the nerd factor and hope you’ll go even further in that direction for the future. Push our envelopes!

Show idea: would love to see you talk a bit more about decanting and how important it can be with certain wines (am thinking about the recent Chateau Haut Brion episode). Maybe a comparartive tasting with the same wine(s) decanted and undecanted?

New fan and new to the wineworld but just tried watching some Winespectator clips and Gary your show kicks ass compared to that ***t. Love the show, especially the episode with Maynard James Keenan. Been marathon watching alot of episodes and can’t wait for the new ones! Much love from the socialist Finland where the monopoly prevents me from enjoying most of the wines you taste :/

Gary – would love to see you revisit a topic like this every three months. I know that there are many of us that have signed up for an obnoxious amount of mailing lists after shows like this. It keeps us ahead of the curve, and I find a lot of value from it.

    thanks again.

    Gary –
I truly enjoy the fact that you keep it real and say what you tasted and thought. I’m referring to the Keever. I almost never hear any wine critic mention the fact that sometimes the wine tastes disportionate to it’s price. And you appropriately state – it’s way overpriced. This is probably true for many wines and I’m glad you state what you feel and taste. It’s much appreciated by me and a refreshing change of pace.

QTD – I recently had the ’04 Clio (El Nido) – Spain, Jumillia. Solid oak structure, integrated for my palate but I could see others finding it too much. Good body and structure. Full, integrated taste – deep red fruits. Quite impressive. 93, if I’m scoring wines.

Haven’t had a culty wine in awhile, though the timing of this episode is impeccable – I’m in the process of my first experience with mailing lists. I put myself on the Phifer Pavitt list after you did that episode and have 2 bottles of the 2006 Date Night en route, one to try immediately, and I’ll put my tasting notes up, and one to put away.

Obviously Gary, you are too busy trying to be a billionaire to do a daily show anymore. Let’s get Mott, Sasha, AJ and Nathan trained to fill in for you.

    QOTD:

2006 Textbook Cabernet Sauvignon by Scenic Roots

    Summary: The Waltz
    From: Scenic Root
    Score: 95

One of the few I?ve paid $60 for and feel was worth every penny.

    Current Price $50

Uncorked this beauty, it?s now decanting for tonight?s spaghetti dinner escapade. Just took a Gary V style ?sniffy sniff? and all I can say right now is wow this wine is going to be amazing and delicious. Easy to tell right off the top.

The first thing I do after pouring a glass of a new wine is to let my cat give it a nice sniffy sniff and then judge his reaction. He actually gave the 2006 Textbook Cabernet Sauvignon more nose than usual which to me is a good sign.

I couldn?t resist pouring a small glass about half hour into decanting?

    COLOR – Very dark

SMELL – Huge dark fruit, light misty perfume, vanilla, hard candy, earthy leaves, I think I am finally picking out what the Oak is all about, and this has it but it?s so understated that it flows in and out without demanding attention.

TASTE – Chalky, chocolate, nice heat around the mid palate, a little bitterness on the backend, silky. Amazing finish.

This wine has so many scents and flavors I love but I cannot put a finger on. I do really enjoy this wine though a lot.

I’m sorry but I had to comment, simply on Kittysafe’s comment. I’m on the floor rolling after reading that, especailly since Gary put a more pronounced turn on this episode. I’m still laughing as I type this. Give the guy a break Kittysafe, atleast he is passionate about what he does and I’m assuming thats why you’re looking at the show…its why I am.

I’m new to the whole wine drinking world and have been taking very small steps thus far. these shows are very informative and I look forward to more to come. I’ve looked at most but I had to comment on this one just for Kitty.
I’m still figuring out what kind of pallet i have so we’ll see how this thing goes.

Gary it seemed as if you just truly enjoyed the wines a lot as well you showed that by the scores you gave. I am interested in joining the mailing list can you shoot me an email on how to get on it. I know you are busy but I would appreciate it. Thanks Adam

2006 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot. Would rate it 92 points. Peppery and a bit more full-bodied than most of the Sonoma Coast Pinots that I have had. Very nice though–glad am I on their mailing list!

Great episode. I’d like to see you do an episode of wines that have already achieved cult status. I know some of the cabs are insanely expensive, but maybe you could do a couple of pinots. I think I remember you tasting some Sea Smoke a long time ago. I liked that.

qotd: I recently tried two of Copain’s Pinot Noirs. One was a Tous Ensemble and the other was a single vineyard. I don’t remember what they were and didn’t take tasting notes, but I though they both were extremely well balanced with fresh fruit and earthy aromas. I would probably have scored the Tous Ensemble about 89-90 points and the single vineyard wine about 91, but I am pretty sure the latter will improve with age. That’s one of the few mailing lists that I will definitely continue to order from.
