90/100

lines of the day – ‘This wine is one thing and that thing is suck ass’ and ‘you all have that friend who brings nothing charismatic to the table’

This episode gets 90 points for the set alone but shame about the wines which were all disappointing. GV on form though

  • QOTD1 – Caddyshack. Groundhog Day was also a great movie. But Caddyshack all the way.

QOTD2 – Celebrities should stick to what they do best – testifying before Congress about very important topics that they have had the chance to act about in movies. Their expertise is critical at this junction.

QOTD3 – I hear that Jason Statham is a genuinely nice person

Hi Gary. I think a lot of us loved the “Friday Taste-Along”. Will this be a weekly thing or a monthly thing or a “once in awhile” thing? If weekly, hit us up with the Friday wines, dude!

    Gary,

How about doing some shows on decent wines in the $20-$30 range (what we generally spend on reds regardless of the day of the week). Maybe demonstrate some wines with good cost/value ratios in this range. I’m thinking that people who have been drinking wine for a while are looking for something a little better than something that you score 86 points. Also, how about comparisons of different wines of the same type by the same winery (for example, Hess Cabs). Enjoy your shows, always learn something. Saw you on Dr. Oz show!

  • The wines on this show were pretty dismal I guess, but I hate to say it (much as I think Akroyd is genius), celebrities are often one dimensional, and don’t deliver much more than the package. The guys were nice enough, but a bit subdued. In no way does that studio set beat the “Thunder Dome” that we are accustomed to, and love so much…oh and the card table under that cloth shook whenever you guys swirly swirled. The pink background left spots when I closed my eyes…thought I was in Disney’s Fantasia for a few minutes there.

QOTD1: Toss up between Caddyshack for its classic quality, and The Razor’s Edge because it stayed so close to the book and showed what Bill is capable of.

QOTD2: A celebrity wine is not necessarily something I would look forward to, but I’ve got to believe that Sophie Marceau would do something interesting and tasty.

QOTD3: I had the honor to know and spend time with Gwen Verdon in the last couple of years of her life…I did not even realize what a star she had been until after she passed. A very kind and classy lady.
    Sorry Mott.

Favourite Bill Murray movie – tie between “Ghostbusters” and “Lost in Translation”. One more of a total comedy from his younger days, the other something more substantial from his maturer period.

Which celebrity should make wine? Somebody with a great sounding name – Max Von Sydow Extra Trocken Riesling maybe.

My favourite celebrity as a celebrity is Bill Clinton – so relaxed and approachable, not a Secret Service guy or entourage in sight, isn’t that incredible? He’s been to Toronto many times. And I’ll say Mott for the extra points.

  • QOTD1: Caddyshack, Stripes, Groundhog Day in that order.
QOTD2: Zachary Quinto should do a nice Sangiovese-based blend.
QOTD3: Tough call…someone said Dave Matthews, and there a quite a few great ones mentioned out there…jury’s out on this one.
