QOTD: disney sucks. long live looney tunes. not counting pixar (which disney bought after the fact and isn’t really disney) the only good thing disney has done is the robin hood cartoon. the fox as robin hood is disney’s best character, baloo was lil john, the thumb-sucking lion played the king. plus it features the saddest song ever written for kids: “every town has its ups and downs. sometimes ups outnumber the downs, but not in nottingham.”

    GV,

Love the Portugese show. Was excited to see you try the 2007 Crasto. I have had it a couple of times and while I agree it is aromatically challenged, with a little time and a nice big glass it ends up showing real well. Great texture, nice balance and awesome spice cake finish. I was surprised when you brought up the oak monster because I did not notice it at all. In fact, I was under the understanding that it was unoaked. Indeed, I checked the QdC website and it does not mention oak ageing for this wine, though it does for all of its other wines – very specifically, too: size, type, length in barrel. I would be interested in your thoughts on that. Was it an off-bottle? A too-hot afternoon? Perhaps this one is due for a retasting in the future with some air and time and not on a 100 degree day? In my book, it is definitely not an 83 point wine. Not even close. Just my 2 cents.

Very interested to see your verdict on the Crasto, over in the UK the Crasto has been taken well, several reviewers love it and its silky tannins. As do the consumers, i think this goes to show the difference in stateside palate and european palate

Hmm. Gonna have to pull the trigger faster next time. Six-buck chuck that’s actually decent sells in quite a hurry, apparently.

Can I say Hayley Mills? When I was growing up (a very long time ago in another century) Hayley Mills was the biggest WALT Disney star and I loved all the characters she played, but my favourite(s) would be the twins in The Parent Trap.

Was this recorded today? You poor thing, if you’re in sunny, bright Florida this morning and have to fly to our glum, gloomy weather later in the day.

Daria – I’m going to try some Portuguese wines but not the ones you tried today

As a Portuguese, it’s always nice to see my home country wines being praised.

As to why you can’t find portuguese wines more often on overseas retailers, the problem is that there’s only a handfull of wineries with enough quantity to fill in the shelves of supermarket chains abroad.

With the exception of Port wine and the ubiquitous Mateus Rose and Lancers, 99% of the wine produced in Portugal is consumed by portuguese. Also because Portuguese almost don’t drink foreign wines (which is a shame), so it is mostly a local-for-local business.

But things are starting to change with a youger generation of winemaking professionals. Quality is improving, but alas… also the price tag.

Good to see you “sweating your but off” down here in my backyard. Wish I could have been there that day. I think you recorded this a month or so ago. It’s still that hot 🙁

Nice production value! Two cameras and good sound. Whoo hoo!

  • I used to comment as Bill H but I just started a wine blog so I will henceforth appear as Balthassar, the name of my blog (and a large format bottle that holds the equivalent of 16 regular size bottles)

First, Portuguese wine: I’ve been really high on them since the first time you plugged them on the show and so far have been very impressed with both quality and value. Of the maybe dozen or so that I’ve tried, I’ve typically found Alentejo to come up the weakest, whereas I’ve been most impressed with the Dao and Duoro reds (and all the whites too actually), so it was nice to see a different outcome here. What are the stylistic differences between the different regions?

Next, varietals. At the suggestion of Dale Cruse (he’s been on the show and runs an awesome site called drinksareonme.net), I started this challenge posed by something called the Wine Century Club, where you check off 100 varietals that you’ve tried and they send you a certificate. When I started I had 39, and but in a little over a month I got up to 100. Obviously it’s not all about varietal – region, style, blend, terroir, vintage are just as important, but it was a cool undertaking that led me in surprising directions, Greek wines being probably the most interesting.

    qotd – Goofy, definately

  • Gary, is Mott pushing for a little more production pizazz? It was pretty cool and really well done. Might have liked to see a shot or two of the audience though. Anyway, just bought a few portuguese wines from the Wine Lib and I’m looking forward to popping them.

Although I’ve never had a Portuguese wine, ever, this show has pumped me up to try a few of them, as well as some of the other varietals that you mentioned that not as many of us are trying enough of. And BTW, you crushed it on Saturday evening, the 24th, at Bookpassage in Corte Madera, CA

QOTD: As far as classic characters go, Donald all the way, especially in the Duck Tales cartoons, you couldn’t understand a damn word he said. As for the newer Disney/Pixar generation, I love Lightning McQueen.

I loved the educational bit- actually teaching the crowd (it came across even more than when you just share knowledge with us when you’re at WL)
I also liked the two camera work, although I wish one could have been panned around to see the crowd’s response to the questions.

QOTD: When I was young, I used to like Br’er Fox (I know I’m probably the only person on the WORLD with that answer) now days probably The Incredibles or Captain Jack Sparrow.
