QOTD: I told KMurph that I wasn’t a big fan of white wine (this was nearly a year ago), and she said she would give me a viognier. I unfortunately wasn’t nuts about it. Wasn’t until I had a Gewurtztraminer that I started getting a little more excited about white wines.

I’m also a HUGE fan of the Ridge Lytton West Syrah-viognier blend. The Viognier really adds a nice flower thing to the wine, and the wine generally rocks my socks off. I was hoping for similar things from the Off the Leash Shiraz-Viognier blend, but there was a bigtime OAK MONSTER that killed it for me.

  • I once ordered a bottle of Condrieu and it changed my life. It all started at a dinner with a vendor of ours. They were taking my co-workers and I out for dinner at a trendy Japanese restaurant in lower Manhattan. About 8-10 of us were shown a thick wine menu and it just so happened that that same day I had read an article in Wine Spectator about Condrieu and I had never tried it. I ordered a bottle on a lark. When the bottle arrived the aroma from the glass was unforgettable. True to form I’ve forgotten the winery and year of the wine but it was stunning. It smelled like not a few but a huge bouquet of flowers. The food match was one of those rare 1+1=15 type things. The entire table was tasting things that only a perfect wine pairing can bring out. It was so viscous for a white wine, yet light on the tongue and easy to drink. Glass after glass. Bottle after bottle. From that point on, despite my limited experience with wine, my co-workers treated me like a Master Sommelier!

Been in love with Viognier since I first had it at Hannah in Napa about 4 years ago. Nothing better with cod or halibut. I really like the Viognier coming from the Santa Barbara area. I try to get up there at least every 3 months to taste.

    Rock N Roll!

Cold Heaven by Morgan Clendenan (Jim’s Wife). And also, she does some work alongside Condrieu legend Yves Cuilleron. THESE wine ARE what Viognier can do at it’s greatest. Elegant, very complex, from scent to swirling bouquets on your palate.
I’m not an adherent of aged Viogniers/ Wht Rhones. Even Chateau Grillet. Gets to be too honeyed and sherry like after a few years. Very complex, but its all non-fruit driven. Just not my thing.
Calera’s Mt. Harlan was awesome, rich, and ripe, dense fruit.

QOTD: Always had a special place in my heart for Viognier. From inexpensive to “pricey” (over 25 bones), you always get more than you pay for, and having tried some $25-ish viognier, I really love this varietal’s ability to be expressive and big, yet clean. No buttery chardonnay wanna be, that’s for sure!

QOTD: Never had a pure Viognier. I’ve had the Treana White Viognier/Marsanne blend, which I’ve liked very much.

  • QOTD:Viognier is my favorite white wine (after Riesling). My main reason is because there is a very distinct flavor I pick up in Viognier, which is cloves (and it it reminds me of Shabbos). Now, Gary, if I am not mistaken, you hardly ever, or never pick up that nuance, aside from when you got your mouth numb on the cloves in that tasting episode. But tell me if I am right that Viognier is a clove and melon play.
