I didn’t like viognier the first time I tried it, so I’ve continued to try it but still can’t find one I like. It has a really distinctive mediciny taste to me that’s very offputting.

Wow. That didn’t take long. Where’s the episode for Wednesday? Looking forward to Friday’s “taste along”. 😉

I’ve liked Viognier for a long time. Nice to see it’s starting to get some recognition. The Hermit Crab blend you tasted on the show some time back shows the potential for good and interesting wines that this grape has in it.

QOTD: Viognier – the varietal that will get Virginia out of “other 46” status (along with Cab Franc).

  • QOTD: best viognier experiences were in the Luberon [Rhone]. I’m not in love with the stuff, it’s certainly not my top 3, even perhaps top 5 of whites, but I do like it.

  • Thanks for tasting another Languedoc, Gary!

QotD – I loved Viognier from my first sip of it (got very lucky and had some great pure viognier from a neighbor in the Languedoc). Well, I guess my first sip was in a Cote Rotie. (Did you guys know that they can put viognier in that AOC?) But my first pure sip was with Salitis and it was solid. And just last week I had a viognier roussane blend at La Peira and it blew my freaking socks off. I am still not over that wine. They only make like 3 barrels each year. I’m going back next week and I’m probably going to pick up a case before it’s all gone.

QOTD: While I can’t recall brands, I have had positive experiences with Viognier from France and CA. Most I’ve tasted have been from France.

I haven’t tried Cline Viognier. It sells well in PA along with Cline’s Cashmere, Rhone blend.

QOTD – Viognier is my ultimate white wine guilty pleasure. It’s like that ever so slightly slutty but really hot chick. Yeah, a little bit trashy, but DAMN she looks good! A couple years ago (’04 I think), Geyser Peak put out a bangin single vineyard Viognier that knocked my socks off. Preston Vineyard I think maybe? Knockout stuff for around 20 bones. The ’07 white Cotes du Rhones are turning out pretty excellent for my taste. Most have, I think, a substantial percentage of Viognier…and they’re dirt cheap!

    Hey Gary,
This is my first comment on the site so I gotta say first how much I love what your doing. The wine world needs more people like you.

QOTD: I think Viognier can be awesome if you know where to look. The cheap stuff can be hit or miss but there are some incredible wines out there that taste amazing at $20-40.
Cold Heaven Domaine des 2 Mondes: Saints and Sinners by Morgan Clenden and Yves Cuilleron 2005 Viognier from the Santa Rita Hills is amazing. The complexity, the aromatics, the finish that never ends. Great stuff. (The ’04 was on the show before if I’m not mistaken)

  • QOTD: I love viognier. I like to switch up my chardonnay consumption with viognier. I really like viognier when I am eating chicken, I feel if you have creamy chicken dishes, they match really well and I definitely like viognier just as a big heavy glass of white, delicious!

    Gary!
Long time lurker – had to respond…
    Virginia viognier BRINGS THE THUNDER!
It is time for you to expand your mind and do a show on Virginia wines, particularly Virginia viognier and cab franc.
The vayniacs have spoken – a bunch of Virginia viognier comments on here. Listen to your public Gary: bring on the VA wine show!
Question of the day: My experience with viognier:
Vacation at the most awesome-tastic resort in the mountains of Virginia, the Homestead (link it UP – http://www.thehomestead.com) with my gorgeous wife: a picnic on the lawn with a beautiful seafood salad, some great cheese, and a fantastic viognier from The Winery at La Grange.

    *puts on Viognier Hat*
Love Viognier, should not be oaked. It kills all the flowery/perfumeness of it.

I like it, watchout for the skin contact tho! will get bitter

QOTD: I haven’t been that excited about viogniers, but I did like The Crusher from Clarksburg, CA – carmel, burnt toast, full bodied.
