  • Hey Gary, great show. Love the blind tasting…. you should do that more often.

I’m am a big fan of d?Arenberg and they do a real nice Viognier / Marsanne blend. It’s called The Hermit Crab..

    Great work as always..

    Nice wristband toss!

QOTD: I live in Virginia and make a lot of Viognier here so I’ve tried quite a few. I would have to say its definitely the varietal that does best here. Linden continues to make quality wines.

  • Mott for the win @6:04.

QOTD: I’ve had some good Viognier from Kunin in Cali and Yalumba in Australia, but after that, this is definitely a wine I need to start tasting more of. Good stuff.

Mr. Buzz was the only one to mention ‘spice’,
    that’s what we look for…
    we were introduced years ago w/the Yalumba;
however, our fav at the moment is from Pepperwood!
    Always good w/Chinese.

  • Viognier? I would say “chateau grillet”. Take me wrong but this is the most interesting viognier grape wine i have ever tasted. Also, i love you’re website. I have just noticed that a major wine distributor in the U.K took most of my ideas and made up a website called bibendumtimes or something like that.I have many more better ideas, can u help me?

Viogner has been a “go to” varietal for me for some time. I tend towards Viogner and Torrontes in the white category.

  • I love the blind taste test shows. Nothing too unexpected today, but you have to have some “low-end” ones to keep you honest.

QOTD:Have not really sat down and drank it seriously, but I might have to if I can get an 87+ for $10 locally.

Only Viognier I have ever had was actually from a winery in Cape Cod Mass. Interesting taste and would like to try another from a more “mainstream” area.

  • Green Pea

My experience with Viognier is it has an oily mouth feel to it. I think that’s what Mot was getting but not able to put his finger on it. It does as you mentioned sometimes have a buttery chard nose but but not quite the same.

QOTD: Have had lots of experience with Viognier, most recently enjoyed what the state of Virginia has to offer with this varietal. Oregon also made some nice Viogniers. One of my favorite producers is Garretson(Santa Barbara??) or Paso Robles. I should try some from France. Recently bought some Ketcham Viognier but haven’t tried it yet.

These blind tastings head to head are the great. People do not realize how hard it is to even identify varietals blinded let alone guess country, producer, etc. A group of 12 guys tried to do this with 12 red varietals in my city and the winner got 5 of 12 correct. Much tougher than you think it will be.
QOTD: I have only had 2 that have blown me away, Georges Vernay 2004 Condrieu Coteaux de Vernon and Guigal 2006 Condrieu La Doriane. Every other Condreu and Viognier that I have tried has been somewhat diappointing, I think they don’t have quite enough acid for me and come off as a little flabby. I will admit that I have not tried more than about 10 Viogniers in my life and need to try more especially want to now try one from Virginia after reading the other posts. Joel

Viognier has recently become tied with Gewurz for my favorite white varietal. Had two recently that were totally robo-awesome, and $20 or less: The 2006 Guigal Cote du Rhone blanc (Ok, only 50% viognier but it still dominated) and the 2006 “The Innocent” Viognier from Shinas Estate in Aussie. I love the oily, buttery thing combined with the aromatics and the generally peppy feel on the palate.

Interesting rumbling sound made Gary crack a smile.

QTOD: I am loving Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier, Melville always does a great job, and I was lucky enough to taste Tangent recently. I feel like the French are getting beat at their own game with this varietal as of late, especially in the value category.
