QOTD: I do enjoy a good Viognier, but I’ve learned exactly the style that I DO NOT like of wines made from this grape as well. I find that many new world producers put out Viogniers that are big, flabby, low acid and high in alcohol and although they may be floral, they sometimes have a waxy bitterness on the finish that tastes like I not only smelled that Lilly but I chewed it… gross.
HOWEVER I have had a few from the Northern Rhone (of course) as well as from California, Washington, and even Australia that show enough restraint that they pair the floral and stone fruit aromas with a weighty palate balanced by fresh acidity and a fairly dry, long finish to make an interesting food pair or a delicious and unique wine to be enjoyed by itself.

Man, I love that kind of episodes!
Not to long, informative and fun.

QOTD. I like viognier – easy drinking – but I don’t remember it as a great wine. And it’s difficult to pare it with food, I think.

MY QOTD. What does that mean: ….. AKA, the internet. Or is it EKE?

i am diggin the no BS, 10 min throw downs. like the other stuff too, don;t get me wrong.
    anyhow
QOTD – viognier! the last one i had was last NYE. it was the 07, andre peret “la cheri”. damn! it had structure, was lean and mean. super acidity. it just ascended in the mouth. which brings me to the next point. it was 30 euros. it was super good. most of the others that i had on the cheaper side have, meh. it is a hard grape to grow. i have not found a inexpensive viognier that is ” great”. so far, i feel like you have to pay to play with viognier.
    great show

qotd: I think viognier is a highly underrated full bodied wine. I love its tendency towards viscosity and oiliness. This is really what marks viognier out for me.

  • Viognier? I am a huge fan of Hungarian wine and Viognier is not so widely spread. Winemaker of the Year Gyuri L?rincz of St. Andrea winery is using it quite a lot in cuvees though. His Boldogságos (Happyness) contains 32% and his Kedves (Beauty) 22%. No cepage though, gotta get that.

Had a great viognier a couple of years ago from Stonebridge in New Zealand. It tasted like those little gummy peach rings, you know those? I think they come in apple flavour too, but this one tasted EXACTLY like the peach ones.

  • QOTD:
Viognier has been quite a favourite varietal for me, together with Torrontes. They’re aromatically so expressive. I probably like Viognier more than Torrontes, because Viognier has a little bit more freshness, flowerthing going on, where Torrontes has that fat grapearoma and more robust aroma’s.

And I still want to drink Chateau Grillet so badly.

    Hi Gary,

QOTD: I love viognier. My favourite is the 2008 Viognier Nord Sud by Laurent Miquel, Languedoc. Over here in Europe I can get it for 10 bones and it tastes like twice the price…

    Loving the blind tasting showdowns!

QOTD: There’s a new vineyard here in Maryland called Black Ankle Vineyard. They’re 5 miles from my house and focus on sustainable agriculture. Their wines are tearing up the Maryland festivals and taking most of the awards. They make a viognier that is awesome! Not that I have a point of reference since it’s the only viognier I’ve had…. but I love it!

    p.s. was that a fart at 6:04??!!
