line of the day – ‘seemed a little conservative, then got a little freaky deaky’

GV was convinced that one of these wine was young, and one definitely a little older. They were both from 2004…proving that our leader is human after all.

  • All time favorite Barolo’s untill this moment:

Bruno Giacosa: Barolo Rocche del Falletto 1999
Cavallotto Barolo riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Guiseppe 1999
Massolino Barolo riserva Vigna Rionda 1985
    Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda 1970
Massolino Barolo riserva Vigna Rionda 1998
    Massolino Barolo Margheria 2001
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino 2001 (from the barrel)
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino 2002 (from the barrel)
    Marcarini Barolo Brunate 1971
Marcarini Barolo Brunate 2003, because it surprised me that it turned out so well in this difficult year for nebbiolo.

Maybe you’ve noticed that my motto is: the bigger the barrel it ripens in, the bigger the Barolo!

    Cheers,

I have a few bottles of Camerano 2001 Barolo. After Gary’s notes on the 2004 being a more classic, ageworthy style, I may wait to begin opening them for a few more years. Pio Cesare and Mauro Veglio both make some good Barolos in this price range.

  • Good show gary, nice and tight! I love barolo too. my dad bred me to like barolo and barbaresco.

the latest barolo i had was an 03 paolo conterno, i think it was about 50$ canadian which is probably more like 40 US. and it tasted like a dustbowl in my mouth. Great wine, it really did wonders to my palate. I love it. I did a full review on my blog, check it out. I had it at this great italian restaurant in Montreal called Le Muscadin. It was out of the world. If you’re in the city and you’re feeling like italian check it out, they have the best italian wine selection in the city, if they don’t have it, no one does.

?OTD – I have only had Barolo once. We went on our honeymoon in Italy in ’98 so I found one from that vintage for our 10 year anniversary last year. It was soooooooooo smooooooth. I wish I would have been into wine when we traveled there back then! That trip really did plant a seed years down the line though…

Gary, you’re a brave man to slurk down ’04 Barolos. This wine can be superb, but trad produced juice really needs age. We opened a bottle of ’99 Giuseppe Mascarello Monprivato vineyard in ’05, and it had a nice cherry/strawberry scent, but on the palate it was meh–I think we wound up using it for cooking. But last month we had some friends over for lamb chops rubbed with garam masala and truffle risotto and tried another bottle. I had a nice Brunello as a backup, but it wasn’t needed. The Barolo sang with tar and cedar and we opened a second bottle to enjoy with cheese. This was the food wine of the year for us! Good thing we have a few bottles left as it’s selling now over $100.

But that’s why I think your prediction of Barolo’s zoom upwards in popularity is off. This is wine for people who can pick one that ages well and have the means to store it properly for 10 years or more.

Like everyone else, I love the blind format. And no need to keep it to just 2 bottles!

    Good tight show.

QOTD: I’ve only had one Barolo and I drank it wayyyyy too young. Talk about the poisonous Cottonmouth snake, it was devastating. Would have been much better 5+ years in cellar.

  • Best ever………and I mean the very best ever was :

    Oderro 1971 – Barolo – La Morra

That was simply a magnificent wine. Silky smooth and extremely complex.
Drank it arround 10 years ago – and can still recall the sensation.

Thanks for some goods shows – now and then I get a chance to watch.

  • Been on the road and offline…trying to catch up on the episodes and this was a nice one to start with. My experience with Barolo’s are limited pretty much to what I’ve had a trade tastings, simply because of the price points, but they certainly give me something to aspire to.

Like the lemon shirt a lot!

1996 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna Cappella di Santo Stefano (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo) 11/10/2009 AMM3RD 93
Popped and poured from Magnum. I really liked this wine, as with most Rocche dei Manzoni efforts. This has a nice nose of red fruits and earth. Flavors of spice, ripe fruit, and super silky mouth feel. Had with Quail, it was a very nice match. Acidity was perfect! Developed nicely in the glass, over the hour. Drink over the next 3 years, IMO…AMM

QOTD: I bought a case of 1994 Brezza Barolo for $5/bottle. Unfortunately it’s all vinegar instead of the wine deal of the century.

I am far behind in my WLTV episodes because I just worked in retail for the first time ever during the christmas holiday season. We sold Wine and Spirits aplenty. The State of PA made lots of money in wine and spirits this year. I still shop in DE though (shhh).

QOTD: I’m tempted to try BRICCO ROCCHE CERETTO BRUNATE BAROLO 2003 Price: $34.99 because that’s a discounted price in PA. I have a 2002 G.D. Vajra Barolo in the cellar. Since it was a bad vintage, it was a risk buying the value barolo last year. Moore Brothers in DE has the 2004 Ettore Germano Barolo Cerretta at $60 but that’s not in my budget. I usually get the Rosso wines instead.
