  • Great episode. Love the ones with your Dad. And what a cool way to celebrate the 800th episode. Only problem is I was watching it at 11.30 last night and got a craving for bread and cheese. That looked really good. As for promoting wines that you have lots of, no problem with that so long as its not abused (and you guys dont do that). So its cool. Brilliant as always !

  • Krunch

Gary and Sasha, Glad to see the team back together again. Very entertain show and the “wait until my book comes out” was a gut kicker.

QOTD: Gary you are right by sticking to your guns. Robert P. Jr. slid away from his principals and look what happen to him.

  • Hendry

“Wait until my book comes out” is maybe the best thing I have ever heard on this show.

  • When are we going to see Sasha, Aj and GV all together on the WLTV?

  • Big Al

Good episode. Don't drink Amerone often but with the right meal its a great wine. I couldn't really hear the QOTD (I think Sasha had too much bread in his mouth :-p ), doesn't really matter.
    Good luck to your Jets!

  • TommyB

I think Bigboy may be being a little harsh here I thought it was a tight show; Sasha was on point, lots of mutual respect between the two of you and a nice bit of friendly banter also. A little more chilled out than usual when Sasha is on! but a nice way to break into the 800 mark – it’s always great when Sasha is on anyway.

  • nycrooner

Congrats on #800! Your dad expresses his opinion just like me. A few head nods and eye brow movements. Love it!!!

  • winemonologues

    Congrats on Episode #800!!

QOTD: Not sure what the question was and don't think it matters much. 😉

I agree with Catherine. . . when will there be a “family show”: with garyvee, sashavee, and ajvee??

  • Congrats on the 800th episode Gary. Thanks for continuously featuring great Italian wines!

QOTD: Good job sticking to your principles. Considering all the stuff coming out now about Wine Advocate and Parker, you are continuously keeping it real and you will be rewarded overtime for it, more than a few cases of wine are worth!

  • MardiGrasQueen

Gary, I just can't believe it! We discovered your show through Tivo and have been watching for over a year and now, when you finally make it to Baton Rouge, my husband and I will be at the Washington DC Louisiana Mardi Gras. We are so sorry that we will not be here but hopefully, you will have a great time and will get back here soon. (PS…if you can get back to Baton Rouge on Feb 6, we can hook you up with a Mardi Gras float ride in the Krewe of Orion..)

  • BrettFavre

I love it when the Russian spy is on!

  • UES Chris

Been following since ep #108 — haven't commented in several hundred episodes, but this show is back to the classics.

Papa V is a character. Amarone is under represented.

    Good stuff.

  • johnboston

So funny. So what's going on behind closed doors, Gary? hilarity.

  • ekenman

Now we have to get the wine and try it our selves… :). I think you bought your self enough integrity to do just that by now.

The Tommasi Amarone is only $37 in Sweden. It's the red wine we serve our guests after their Spa treatments.

    Thanks for a great show!

  • Great episode, loved the father son interaction. Was it just me or were you a little nervous having your Dad on the show Gary? (know I would be!)

QOTD: I like your philosophy and reasoning behind 10 case rule, but since you do the Christmas / Mystery packs there is def a selling element to the show. Would love to hear your thoughts on the distinction.

  • Love this episode!

Being sort of new to WLTV I had no idea who this Sasha was that people kept requesting recently in the comments. Now I'm going to have to watch all the other episodes with him. Loved your interaction together — from him giving you a kiss, to his not wanting to give up his glass of Tommasi, to the “I don't want to call names, but he's a traitor” comment.

QOTD Stick to what got you to where you are today. It's obviously working. Cheers!

  • Thanks. I am planning to drop by the store on Monday. I will be sure to pick up a bottle!

  • Thanks for the info, Jason. I’ll keep Justin’s contact handy for future inquiries.

  • SASHA, SASHA, SASHA!!! Congrats on 800 GV! What happened to Disqus??

QOTD: Let Sasha taste whatever he wants, but keep to the policy ongoing. So yes give him a special exemption.

  • cellarrat5

MORE FOOOOOOOOOOOD PAIRINGS IN 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'M HOPEING THAT IF I TYPE IN CAPS IT WILL SOMEHOW INCREASE THE PROBABLILTY THAT MY HUMBLE WISH WILL BE GRANTED. KEEP UP THE OLD SCHOOL FORMAT, KEEP BRINGING THE THUNDER AS LONG AS YOUR DRINKING WINE WITH FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD (a little wayno da wino came out in me).

  • SourGrapesFC

    Gary,

Here's an idea: tell your dad that you're turning the show over to him, and then, after seven months or seven shows or seven minutes or something, come back in and tell him you're taking the show back, but that he can review the same wines half an hour later. Hilarious.

  • wayno da wino

    Yo Guys, NIIIIIIIIIIIIICE Episode!!!!!!

    qotd: Nooooooo Prooooobleeeeeem…….

  • Corkshack

    WLTV,

A big Thank You to Kristen and the WLTV staff for their excellent customer service. I had a bad bottle and they dealt with it swiftly and impressively.

    -Corkshack (Chris Anderson)

  • wltv

you're so welcome Chris! And you know…it was Sasha who saw the problem first! 🙂

  • Corkshack

    I knew I liked Sasha! 🙂

  • A.S

    Congratulation on the 800th episode!
Always fun to see Sasha on the show!

  • Congratulations on show #800. I just posted my second video podcast. I can only hope to get to #800!

  • Congrats on 800

Absolutely LOVE Papa Sasha on the show… that's MY answer to the QOTD. The thumbs up + smile at the end was great. Keep em coming GV

  • themosk

Glad you've made it this far GV! Still waiting for #1000 up in SF just like you said you were thinking of doing back when you were in the area during your book tour… BTW, my bro finally shared his Dancing Hares… still young but loved it!

  • Phredd3

Gotta love Sasha. You two have such an interesting dynamic. With him, you're still the smart-mouth kid. And I mean that in a good way. You obviously love each other a lot.

QOTD: As long as the show doesn't become a sales platform, do what you want. If you are willing to pan a wine that you already bought in big numbers, then go right ahead. It is the honesty that carries the show.

  • TommyBoBoofWI

Whoo who!!! shout out to Wisconsins own Jim Leonhard,, proof that a little guy with heart can make the big leagues and do well!!

  • Sasha is the MAN!!!

Always love the shows with him…

    Congrats GV on #800…

and get on UStream, will ya???

  • johncannata

Your dad is a CRACK UP. By far, my favorite guest because of how you two interact.
QOTD – I think its great that you stick with your original rules. Don't review anything you have quantity of. Leave those things for special occasions like the “mystery packs”.
    Solid Show!

  • toddasaurus

Gotta love the competitiveness with these two! It's what made you G!

  • BobbyX

Great show…nothing like the family interaction of love meets fight club. But this is Wine Club and Sasha, the first rule of Wine Club is we don't 'give it a whirl' before 'sniffy sniff'.

QOTD: I'd love to see you rate something that you stock and have readily available. Watching your show and being able to buy based on on your video rather than a brief blurb on a sheet of paper in a store is much more valuable to me. I suppose, though, that you are worried it might influence your rating or at least that you might be accused of of it, so I see why you made the rule and are sticking to it.

  • tommyb2

Only 3 points for 8 comments??!!!

  • drt999

Well, I have 2 pts with 15 comments!

  • diggles

QOTD: Please try more popular wines. Most of the wines on the show I can't find here in MN, and I can't have the shipped here either.

  • andre_hm

Like the fact your dad eats bread while tasting (drinking…). Back in Portugal we do that a lot…and eat olives…it separates good wines from bad ones…

  • MannyN

QOTD: i agree with your father that you should rate wines from the store. I do understand where you are coming from with the obvious conflict of interests, but often times some of the wines you rate are hard to find elsewhere. We watch the show to see you rate wines and then be able to compare your reaction to our own palate. If you are worried about a conflict of interest…then rate the wines blind and have a mix of store and non-store wines….unless your worried that u could destroy a store wine unknowingly and be stuck with 50 cases on your shelves….hahaha….and the 10 case rule why not 9 why not 11 thats just random

  • Shootmenow

Congrats on 800. Love to see the family involvement and of course Sasha is a star.

QOTD: keep it as it is for your picks and maybe have a non-WL fan voting site for picking more common wines that you might have a lot of. Maybe you could use other sources to get wine nominated… i.e. top 3 selling/popular wines from another web retailers site/CellarTracker/Corkd? 😉

  • SASHA, SASHA, SASHA! Congrats on 800!

QOTD: Let Sasha taste whatever he wants, but keep the policy in place for ongoing shows. So yes, I'm advocating for Sasha getting a special expemtion when it comes to this.

  • Very entertaining. Like your father a lot, reminds me of mine. I'm considering you the Johnny Carson of the Wine world. Thanks again for a great show.

  • manonthemoon

Sasha always kills it, gotta bring him on more often. Once a month?

QOTD: Yes not all of the time, but every once and a while, because I know a lot of times the wines are hard to get if you give them a good rating because they sell so fast.

  • SS_Chris

It's really nice for Sasha to have that screfty little guy as a guest.

  • John__J

qotd im fine w it, if you can do it and still be unbiased. But if it was me, I probably wouldnt do it either.

Gary, not only is your dad my fav guest you have on by far, I love the way you guys play off each other. a joy to watch.
Would love to watch an episode that had one of those Jura wines from Chateau-Chalon AOC on it too…

  • I have to admit I have not been a big fan of Italian wines – in general. However, I've never had an Amarone. Based on your father's reactions, I will try the 2005 Tommasi Amarone. If he kept wanting to go back to it then it's worth a try from me….to expand my palette!

This was a great way to cap off 800 shows. As always, it's great to see you and your father working together and having a great time.

QOTD – It makes no difference to me what you promote and what you don't. I only ask that you don't start reviewing wines that you “need” to sell to get rid of.

  • ipensa

Great Show Gary. Sasha is the best guest bar none! Gotta have him on more often. Completely relate with him in regards to drinking the wine.

Respect to both of you. You both have made it in your own right.

QOTD- Much respect to Gary for sticking to your stance. If you ever find a wine that stands out and you feel we would benefit from you tasting/reviewing it then, regardless if its a WL volume stock or not you should def review it.

    BTW Portuguese wines FTW!

    Thanks Gary and Sasha Vay-ner-chuck

    Take care

  • The vexing question of which wines to taste on WLTV and which to exclude because you sell them presents a real conundrum.

On one hand, your 10-case rule supports objectivity. On the other, giving your viewers the opportunity to purchase wines you taste has value, too. I ordered from Wine Library online two of the Gigondas featured in show #678. Tasting them while watching the show again was excellent experience.

I wish you would taste more wines that are easily available everywhere — Barton & Guestier, Freixenet, Gallo of Sonoma, etc. — and share your notes. I know you've done this a few times, but suggest little more often so your viewers can taste along with you and compare. And learn why and how “supermarket” and “beverage” wines can fall short of artisanal efforts. Call it a teachable moment. I suppose you may have more than 10 cases at hand in New Jersey, but people are not going to buy these from you — they can go to the grocery store down the street and pick them up immediately and cheaper (after shipping costs).

In any event, keep up the good work. Your dad is welcome any episode. Really enjoy his cool playing off your hot. His side glances at you are priceless.

  • corkscrew

Gary and Sasha, great show, loved the banter, congrats on #800. I have become a big Italian wine fan but do not have much experience with Amarone..think I will go out and buy the Tommasi since you both enjoyed it so much…I think Sasha would have drank the whole bottle if the show had gone on any longer. 🙂 ww.winelx.com
