lines of the day – ‘Mott:’I root for the Jets the same way you root for the Giants’..GV – ‘so you hate them’ and one of the best lines of all time, ‘this show all week is going to be almost unwatchable to anyone who can’t deal with Jets talk’

Phenomenal show – I always love the ones where GV is pumped by recent Jets victories and his mood is through the roof for this one

The cool thing about music back then is that albums were basically good all the way through. I have some old Three Dog Night, Chicago, Steppenwolf, etc. LPs, and they work so well on vynil because you don’t ever have to get up to skip songs.

  • I've had red beer in Mexico. With the proper spices it was pretty tasty. Fun episode because you were so hyped up after the win. Thanks!

@garyvee QOTD I drink a lot of prosecco in the summer. Love the stuff. In the winter I don't drink sparkling unless it's an occasion.

  • NY Pete

    🙂

Beach Boys were my favorite band growing up…even got to meet a couple of them…

  • Beeper

    Robert Johnson?

  • Beeper

Good answer, but never thought of Nirvana as a ‘roots’ band. What are their roots?

  • Tell me about it, Moving Pictures is one of the best albums of the 80s and for me was transformational with their music. Been a fan ever since and let's not even go into Neil being the best dummer in the history of music……ever.

  • Beeper

Yeah, missed Ben Harper in there….just getting steered towards Wilco recently

  • ian42

I work as a waiter and i still remember the first time someone ordered red beer. I had the same reaction as Gary. It makes me laugh to this day. What a weird combo. But why do people only use tomato juice to be weird? Where's the carrot juice or eggplant juice with alcohol? Does anyone else have drinks that they do with this stuff?

  • Beeper

As far as drumming goes, I hate to listen to what I love to play. That being said, Rich, Krupa & Weckyl are some of my favorites to learn new tricks from…

QOTD 1: People that say there’s no good music today don’t have the desire to go find it. The music biz isn’t like it was in the 60s and 70s. The good stuff doesn’t come to you anymore, you have to go find it. Good god, get on pitchforkmedia.com, tinymixtapes.com, cokemachineglow.com, popmatters… scores of other music web sites giving press and reviews to the great music that’s being made today. Radiohead is the most accomplished, groundbreaking rock band since the Beatles, Spoon just plain doesn’t make bad albums ever, the new pornographers, andrew bird, deerhunter, neko case, neutral milk hotel, interpol, deerhoof, belle and sebastian, broken social scene, arcade fire, dan deacon, the fiery furnaces, the flaming lips, pavement, islands, the unicorns, menomena, of montreal, ruby suns, wolf parade, rufus wainwright, sufjan stevens, the shins, the strokes, the walkmen, the white stripes, times new viking, yo la tengo …. need i go on? there’s never been a better time to be a music fan. there’s more artists doing more experimental things and access to their work has never been easier. stop the deluded nostalgia of “there’s no good music anymore.”

QOTD 2: 50/50s, silly raffles, nothing major. not a gambler.

QOTD 3: sparkling month could be fun. so could red beer month. go for it GV!

  • ian42

O and QOTD: There still is good music being made but for some reason it isn't necessarily on the radio. If you like Zeplin, Gov't Mule or Derek Trucks would be GREAT examples. I hope the guest sees this comment; it would open his eyes to a new world. Also shout out to underground jazz. Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkle, and Johnathan Kreisberg are doing big things.

  • Beeper

It’s fun to play weird time signatures…11/8 is ridiculous…but if I am not playing along, it’s hard to listen to

  • Being from Montana we know all about red beer! Awesome to see someone from SD on the show. I (Andy) would say there is still good music being made. I love the Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand and that sort of music. Edie likes country, especially George Strait and The Oak Ridge Boys. She likes a little Pink and Greenday now and then too though. Best thing I won at a game of chance was a robot that you could move around and make talk when I was in 6th grade from a drawing at Burger King. That thing was cool!
Awesome episode guys, you really had great chemistry together!

  • Gregory

    Regarding red beer…

In late 2007, Anheuser-Busch began producing Budweiser & Clamato and Bud Light & Clamato. I tried one. Horrible! Absolutely hideous! I've no idea what the appeal is. I like beer, and I like tomato juice, but I don't like them together. Yuck.

  • Beeper

I think I just needed to speak up

  • Cabdrinker

Gary, there is no other Charger fans here! I am here alone on my own island! If I haven't said it enough, congrats and GFY 🙂

  • Cabdrinker

    See above 😉

  • SourGrapesFC

    luck be a lady…

  • StevenL

    Mule Rules- Best name ever.

  • DFbwp

Congratulations on a big win, GV. Really thought the Chargers had you, but you gotta believe, I guess.

QOTD 1: Not big music fan except I like the real real real old music such as Renaissance polyphony, artists like Anonymous 4, Chanticleer, the Tallis Singers.

QOTD 2: I have almost never won anything in my life from a game of chance, but I did win $1 in the No. Carolina lottery and still have that ticket up on my refrigerator.

  • Tom T.

    First – J.E.T.S. suck suck suck. (j/k)
QOTD #1 – I have definitely gravitated towards the blues so it have to be Eric Clapton even though he is not pure blues he is influenced by it. Too many others to list (Buggy Guy, Robert Randolf to name two).
QOTD #2 – game of chance had to be in 7th grade playing spin the bottle for the first time and getting my first french kiss with a girl named Michelle.

  • DFbwp

Also– Gary's side question: don't do so much on sparkling. I can't get anyone to drink it with me. I buy a bottle and it sits in the fridge waiting for someone to want to drink it. Everyone has “special occasion” itis.

  • DFbwp

Good call on the 85s. Mott was a little sick as GV mentioned.

  • DFbwp

Here's the question: can you drink wine, play poker, and still win? I drink Dr. Pepper when I play poker. Anything alcoholic tears up my judgment.

  • Gary…

REGGIE WAYNE WILL BE LOST ON REVIS ISLAND ON SUNDAY BABBBBBBBBY!

  • plcb

QOTD1: How about Green Day? Pearl Jam?
QOTD2: My current wine job kind of happened by chance. Wasn't in the cards yet it happened.

  • MelbaLI

Well I guess this means I have to turn in my lurker card. First off, the only wines I like are sparkling wines so thank you for thinking about a months worth. Second. FU about the yankees :P. You can taste the bitter NY Mets fan on the back palette right? Third. Nine inch nails. And finally, since no one has the ball or ovaries to call it…..

    Detroit Lions 2011! 😀

  • CharlieTN

    Pearl Jam! Yah!

  • CharlieTN

Nine Inch Nails! Yah! (although he's probably thrown in the towel, at least for a couple of years… and he just got married)

  • kathyinahwahnee

QOTD1: Coldplay, U2, the style of music is so much different now.
QOTD2: Won $800 in the California Lottery.
Gary's QOTD: Don't care for many Champagnes so I find that sparkling wine fit that bill well for me, but then I usually only drink them on special occasions.
Lastly, RED BEER OH YEA, use to drink them as a hangover cure all,. We called them Bloody Mary Beer and did the spicy.

    268 comments, WTF

  • nickgrzenda

Wow. I can't believe you've never heard of a red beer (aka. Michelada). Anheuser-Busch has been making bank on this drink since early 2008 with their release of their Bud and Bud Lite Chelada. I've worked in the industry for 3yrs and sold gallons and gallons of the stuff. Anyway…

QOTD 0: Probably 1 bottle of bubble to 50 still. Go for a month of bubbles!
QOTD 1: I have a degree in jazz and definitely think there is still good music out there. My current favorite group is Chris Potter's Underground (jazz). But I also think there is a lot of good music out there, even in the pop realm. From a musicians perspective, a lot of the lyrics to pop (which includes rock/rap/country/etc) songs out there are crap right now, but a lot of the real music behind the lyrics is still really good. There are musical genius producers and composers out there right now being paid big bucks to make great music with total crap lyrics, with awful singers put on top of it. Most people just can't listen through the crap to hear the gold. There are also some really great artists creating their own music.
QOTD 2: Every time I play music it's a game of chance. Will it go well? Will the crowd like you? Is my horn going to crap out (or reed)? When those magic music moments happen, it's the most amazing feeling in the world.

  • nickgrzenda

QOTD 1 Continued: Music is also like wine. One man's swill is another mans nectar. Drink/listen to what you like.

  • Went to Monte Carlo and all they drink is Champagne and Rose Wine I'm totally down for adding sparking wine into the rotation 🙂

  • As far as who is making good music now, check out My Morning Jacket! And, best game o' chance win was a Charlotte Hornets windbreaker at Carowinds when I was around 11! I was freakin' pumped!

  • ERog

Great episode! Good job by all.

QOTD 1: I highly recommend trying Porcupine Tree. It's sort of a Radiohead meets Pink Floyd meets Tool. Best band I've been introduced to in the past 10 years.
QOTD 2: $12 from a slot machine. Not much of a gambler, and I can't think of another example!

  • 😉

New to your show. From Saint Paul MN. . Terrific show, makes me laugh out loud every time I view. I even enjoy your Jets banter, altho as a VIKINGS believer I gotta say ” It's gonna happen for the Vikes this time.” Let us know when you try the RedBeer concoction. Well the Belgians make all those fruity beers, and tomato is technically a fruit, . Perhaps with a bitter…….. nah still sounds wretched. Perhaps after a Gogol Bordello showt.

  • ottawab

Red Beer ……….. we call it a Red Eye up here.

Love the funk from the Montirius ……. I like the dry wines, old world.

  • bseal

Bloody Beer FTW…We've been curing hangovers and the rotten guts that go along with them with bloody beer forever in Arkansas..

Never drink white…ever…im gonna work on that in 2010 fo sho..More of a bourdeaux, rhone, CDP kinda guy…

    Peace to All

Long time viewer, first time commenter. How could I resist when my Minneapolis' Surdyk's and Haskell's get a shout out..lots of good smaller wine shops here, too. I root for the Packers but I'm very happy for Favre's success.

This was a great show; Gary's joy is palpable and the guys looked like they had some fun, too. Red beer / michelada are big here, it's just delicious. Try with lime juice and hot sauce. Red Stag Supper Club in NE Mpls has a great rendition.

To the guys, I'll buy you a glass of wine if I see you around town and you can spill the behind-the-scenes secrets from the Vaynerplex 🙂

  • krisblair

Hey Gary, could you please do a show with some wines from the Clos Du Val Napa Valley winery ?

Sorry to come outta now where with this, but I received a 2005 Merlot for Xmas out of this winery and I'd love to see your review of it.

BTW: Great Show and Go Jets !!!

  • Steve_T

I like the idea of devoting some time to sparkling wine, a month may be too long though.

As a Giants fan, I'm wondering if the Jets go all the way can we expect free shipping codes and discounts.

  • Generic Eric

Classic 70's bands: Pink Floyd, King Crimson. King Crimson's catalog just started re-issuing in 5.1 surround sound. Pink's Dark Side of the Moon in 5.1 is a religious experience if you have the equipment.
Modern Bands: Porcupine Tree is worth checking out in a live show when they are on tour (bring earplugs, they are over-the-top LOUD live). To me, their sound is a cross between King Crimson & Pink Floyd). Most of their catalog is also available in surround (Check out “In Absentia”).
Coming down from LA to San Diego to see the game on the Amtrak SurfRider was a blast. It rides along the beach most of the way there. I was a little speck of green in a sea of Blue and Gold, but the Charger fans did not give me too much trouble when my chant kicked in (it's now a reflex action).
Enjoy the game in Indy, Gary! I am really jealous.
If we can get enough pressure up the middle on Manning, then we may be see another amazin' upset.

    Jets! Jets! Jets!

  • Beeper

Gov't Mule and Derek Trucks rock…not into the jazz so much though, unless I'm playing it, you know?

  • Gubby

I don’t have as much Robert Johnson stuff (although I really dig the Clapton covers). I mostly listen to electric blues. I generally lean towards the hot guitarists like the three Kings: Albert, Freddie, and B.B., Clapton, and Stevie Ray. I do need to start listening to some more Delta blues musicians like Johson and Broonzy though.

  • laposte

I have been drinking red beer since the early 70s, where have you been?
    Good question Gary.
Although we enjoy a bottle of wine a day and I really like champagne we only open one every 2-3 months, that's just no good, I think I will go open one right now!

Ok, where was I. Oh next question. I grew up in the late 60s early 70s but never listen to music from that era. Now mostly chant.
Game of chance? a pumpkin at a church fall carnival, hey it was a BIG pumpkin and the ticket was only 50 cents!
