yes I am … a BdM that was a cindy buy … it’s rockin’ the casbah!

  • Double blinds are where you have NO information on the wine. Nothing. Someone gives you a glass of wine and it’s up to your nose and mouth to determine where it’s from and what it is.

Single blinds give you a little bit of information on the wine. Where it’s from or what grape was used to make it.

    Triple blind?

  • Sounds great….I’m taking a few days off the juice. Lots of work to do. 🙂

  • You guys are great! 🙂
I haven’t given him a bottle yet, of course, it would have been nice to know this one was coming. 🙂

  • Enjoyed the show. It is not double blind in any way — my word you knew two were screw tops. But, such a show is more about testing Gary, not quality of wines. Testing Gary is fun, but what does it say about wines opened three days earlier? Way too many variables. And who really drinks wine from paper bags without food?

Kermit Lynch, great American importer of Burgundian (appropriate for a Pinot Noir show) and Rhône wines, had wonderful comment: “Blind tasting is to wine what strip poker is to love.”

Still, enjoyable watching Gary play strip poker and shoot office air balls.

    QOTD: Yes. Amazon.com purchase.

  • Yes on Madeira. A Leacock’s 5-year-old Malmsey is my secret weapon at dinner parties and similar events. It’s easy to find, affordable — around $25 — and stands on its own at the end of the party after the whites and reds have had their moments.Plus, I find most people have never tried it, many don’t even know about it. That’s when you pop them with “wine that toasted the Declaration of Independence” and “wine on Betsy Ross’s side table as she created the American flag.” Always a pleasing, sweet, high note for a party-ending pour.

Keith most of use review out wines on Corkd.com it is a part of the Wine Library community. It does use the 100 pt scale but the tasting notes are usually more important then the score. So check it out.

  • I believe Lynch’s acerbic comment meant strip poker is a simulacrum of seduction and sexual conquest, while a more reverent tasting of wine is the integration of many special sensual things, resulting in longer-lasting satisfactions and deeper meanings. Whatever, I certainly enjoy the wines Lynch imports. His name on the back label usually is gold.

Blind tastings, to me, are more “Top Chef” or “Hell’s Kitchen” competitions. Entertaining, yes. Not the experience I pray for at my dinner table. There, I prefer bon appétit to bon mot. Although granted, together they can make for a lively evening.

  • CALI BABY! Thnc Ernest!

  • I love u more nanc

  • QOTD: Yes, 2 copies one at Amazon and another copy from you on the tour in CT for my wife, signed by you. I think the second book was clearly part of the “Thank You Economy”.
I even have proof of a short video clip of you in CT.

    C Shorty,
Are ya close to a Trader Joe’s? I don’t mean the 2-Buck Chuck stuff, they have some others that are great value. Try both the Renditions label Zin and Petit Sirah. Great juice for 9-bones, as GV would say.
I agree with you on the value price point reviews. Please show us “workin’ folks” some-a-dat wine!!

Value Driven Wine is a good thing right now, I agree!!….. for a second i thought you were implying that Gary doesnt work hard for his money……. It must be “Hard Work” tasting all that wine!:)
    Thanks for everything gary!

Holy crap that’s crazy, you do the same thing I do! Ya, I agree, there’s no way to pull off a contest like that and make sure that it’s legit at the same time. We could have a little mini-contest between the two of us if you want for the next blind tasting, I think that would be fun (I have no idea how we could do that though). I just really like trying to predict GV’s score after what he says about the wine.

  • NY Pete

    first … 🙂

  • Top 5 is so lame.

Now how could I not get in on this puppy…..Man I hope Coleman Nicole is one of them.

  • Grill Factor

  • Beeper

I’m curious about Madeira, too. Reading “Thomas Jefferson on Wine” right now, and apparently it was a pretty big deal back in 1790.

Good question….can’t tell you what the vik’s front office will do – not logical. Maybe Gary knows….?

  • Anonymous

get the audio book off itunes

  • CdrSteveJones

3 days open with very little oxygen in there. There was oxygen there before the corks were pulled, no?

  • Anonymous

AGREED…i think you should have a “college episode”

  • tflangan

Top ten again. Yipee. Now on with the show. Looks like a good one. We need more blind tastings. Looks like GV's been watching reruns of Sideways.

  • @palatematch

Love the blind tastings! Viognier next?

QOTD: Yes. I have purchased and read it.

  • David N

Yes, picked up the book. I gave you some local root beer at St. Louis book signing. Get a chance to try them?

  • You need Thunder Dan to come help you with your stroke. God, his jumper was so wet.

    QOTD: I did.

  • qotd: Yes

  • QOTD Yes

Too bad you didn't say where you thought they might be from!

QOTD — sorry, no, not this time (did buy two of the first book)

  • No.

  • Beeper

He’ll be back. He hasn’t retired for 2 years in a row because he can’t go out like that!

  • drt999

Maybe next time! I admit, when I saw the show title, the first thing I thought was 'I hope someone snuck in an advance bottle of CN'

  • CdrSteveJones

    No book.

  • great show… loooove Pinot!!!

QOTD: YES, and enjoyed meeting you in Pasadena… BTW.. STILL waiting for that wristband… 😉

  • cubs2806

No I have not….yet! Good show yet again! Have been watching past episodes, but can anyone tell me if GV has ever tasted a GSM?

  • CdrSteveJones

I got 3 of the first. ZZZZ.

  • CdrSteveJones

    GV shows no love.

  • cgatesman

    QOTD: Yes! 2!

  • cubs2806

Should try an antica terra pinot

  • castello

Kudos to Califrisco! I've had the Testarossa at the winery and they're all about the Pinots. Too bad I'm not. They already have big heads and now you've exploded their egos! Pretty pricey even for their low end stuff but I'll have to try it again now. When I get my tax money maybe.
QOTD Yes I bought one and read most of it before I gave it to my room mate. I also bought one of your first book just because it was easy but haven't opened it yet.
    Great Blindy!!

  • I purchased the audio book a few days ago… a great listen.

  • Neil

QOTD: Not yet but I suspect I'll get a copy for my B-Day on 2-1-10. Wifey-poo is looking for a signed copy methinks………….

  • notTheFalseD

    QOTD: Yes.

As a gesture of solidarity, I too was having a wine that had been opened for three days as I watched this episode. But unlike Gary, I knew what it was…

  • zrm

    gotta love the double blind

    QOD: no sorry

  • gotsha

QOTD..yes. Have I read it yet, well that's another story.

Hey, I like the idea of a contest between the two of us. We of course would just have to have a gentleman’s agreement and let our word be our bond that neither of us would cheat. There will have to be some trust here in more than one way (I’ll explain below). I like a challenge myself, and so cheating is just to easy (not to mention tacky) as far as I’m concerned. So here is what I propose…

During the next blind tasting episode, we do just what we did today. To determine a winner, we will go by who was off by the LEAST amount of points. For instance, I was off by a total of 2 points today. I got one exactly right, was off by a full point on one wine, and off by a half point on 2 wines (a half point being a plus…like if I guessed 88 points and he scored it 88+ points, that means I was off by a half point). If you agree to that, then here is what I propose we wager…the loser has to send the winner a copy of Crush It! within one month after the episode airs (Since we both said that neither of us have it yet). Or maybe the loser would have to send the winner their choice of either of GV’s books. The trust I mentioned above would mean that we would also have to exchange email addresses in order to exchange mailing addresses. So what do you think? And of course we can have someone here in the comments be a witness to the agreement.
