Now that is QPR right there!

  • ERog

Great show! I love sauvignon blanc. New Zealand versions like Kim Crawford and Drylands really got me interested in wine about five years ago. My tastes have changed somewhat, but I still like that style.

    Current favorite: Domaine Daulny Sancerre
Least favorite: I've never found a vintage of Nobilo I have liked

  • cellarrat5

Fantastic show; brown bagen it, huge Mott sighting, Cali comes through with the good SB, Random call from the wife and Gary almost spells the end of WLTV. This is the shortest most action packed ep I have seen.

QOTD 1: I am having a hard time coming up with anything! I feel ashamed, need to get out of the winery more. I like Duckhorn's SB, but I have not been drinking many recently.

QOTD 2: worst one I had was some barley drinkable garbage I had from NZ of all places. Nothing against NZ, I have had some very nice SB's from there. This one happened to be terrible.

  • Double blind coming!

  • good point!

  • ahhahah not even close, u better watch urself

  • mikelanducci

cant wait to show these comments to wine weirdo Christopher, he's so addicted to Kim Crawford he drank a case in like 2 weeks, i think he'll be glad to see he's not alone. i have to admit it's been great every vintage ive had. though Nothing compared to a decent Sancerre of course. i also liked a recent Crocker and Starr SB i had.

  • Jason and I swear I would have STOPPED!

  • thnx JR it was fun!

  • me2 I am glad u liked it!

  • D_Rod

    Ha, nice episode.

QOTD: Not sure. Not sure I have one–more of a riesling guy.

  • Ron Westlund

come on Gary !! what about the acid? you don't usually (maybe never) mention acid. a critical omission. fun show….you put yourself out there. but where is the acid? such a neglected attiribute in wine decriptions these days. Parker's fault? 🙂
please do a show where you compare a varietal (red or white) and discuss acid vs. flabby fruit bombs. tell us about acid. people need to know this. acid wines aren't crowd pleasers because people want fruit forward wines. be the man!!! talk up the acid.
    Ron

  • QOTD: Worst: Craggy Range, Te Muna Road Vineyard, NZ… it tastes like disappointment with cement shoes.

Best: Ferve Saint-Bris…nothing near what you would expect from a place that you would never think made it!

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

qotd: Really don't have a Favorite or Worst SB. But me likes a bunch of 'em,
Cloudy Bay, Kim Crawford, Rochioli, Duckhorn, Geyser Peak, etc…….

  • I don't know.

  • ian42

Hey can you do a double blind tasting with a master of wine?? That'd be cool.

QOTD: I dunno my favorites, but I still remember my first s blanc: Kim Crawford 2006. The grassy flavors and the fruits were like nothing I had had before (I was 19) and it really turned me on to the varietal.

  • DaveyJohnson

Who is your wife buying wine from????

    Better deal than WL?

  • JoeMilli

I'm a true lurker,, I have seen every episode but here i come,,,
Jackson-Triggs Sauvignon Blanc Proprietors' Grand Reserve 2008 is my fav..

  • Surprised to see New Zealand in California. 🙂

QOTD: Favorite is still Brancott followed by Cono Sur

  • Monica

I had Pomelo SB like a couple of weeks ago and it was REALLY good. Your description is spot on!

  • rieslingrich

Yea Riesling, bout time. Go GERMAN !! RieslingRich

  • ironmics

I still don't have a favorite sauv blanc, because I have not had a single one I've liked. For some reason all that I've tasted are just over powered with bell pepper. Bell pepper doesn't bother me, but they just have nothing else going on for me. I've been meaning to try some Sancere though. Oh yeah, does Doisy-Daene count, I liked that a lot :).

On a side note, since it's my new favorite category of wine. Will you please please please consider doing a white Rhone episode? 🙂 Maybe white CdP, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, that would be perfect.

  • scottb5112002

Sbragia Sav Blanc Napa ROX.Also love Mulderbosch from S Africa

  • lc

don't quit the show, Gary. very nice episode

  • jerwine

    Fave…… Alempue Eco Sauvignon Blanc '07 & '09 (Chile)

  • benkearney

Favorite SB: the 2009 Patricia Green. Tried it while it was getting bottled. Fan-freakin-tastic.
Least favorite: who knows. I don't remember any really bad one. Probably some shlock I had by the glass at a chain restaurant when I wasn't feeling like having beer.

  • Victor

Cliff Lede is pronounced leedee, it rhymes with needy & greedy. I don't drink enough (any) Sauvignon Blancs to have a fav/not…

  • DAveAll

Now THAT is a different shirt. yuck! haha. Maybe wear a brown bag shirt to the next brown bag show.
Ya need to go outside more often – like that snow day show. Do it in the rain, on a train, with a goat, I mean that is better than taking calls on your show, right? right?
GREAT show, enjoyed your fun with the wines.
    Nice cameo of Mott!
QOTD: Cedar Cellars and Yellow Tail.

  • LMNOPinot

QOTD: Casas del bosque. Chile. mmm good.
Double bling would be some fun to there big bear.

  • philanderson

This is a varietal that is near and dear to my heart. Sauvignon Blanc has so far passed Chardonnay as my favorite white. My favorite USED to be Firestone until they sold and now it tastes nothing like it used to. Now it is Cloudy Bay. I LOVE it! My least favorite? I don't know if I have one. I really haven't had any horrible Sauv Blancs that I can think of. My question to you, Gary: What did you NOT like about the Cliff Lede? You obviously thought it was from New Zealand because of the grassy, grapefruity nose. That is what I LOVE about Sauv Blancs from Australia and New Zealand. I'm curious what turned you off about it.

    Thanks,

    P-Hilly

  • theDude

Thumbs up for the zoom in on Mott's beard!! That's a top 10 SportsCenter moment!

Has it been 2 weeks already G? The gray shirt was just getting broke in! Oh well, I was getting bored with that game anyway!

QOTD: Don't drink much SB but recently had a Kim Crawford that was ok. I have an '08 Brancott SB but haven't tried it yet.

  • chateauneufdupimp

    QOTD:
fav: j.christopher sauv blanc from oregon, ridiculous sancerre-like wine, very crystaline, mineral, citrus peel, delicate, great acidity, $20
no fav: any sauvignon blanc that's oaked, leave the barrels for chard or something red!

  • Randall

Perfect way to meet the requirement of best and worst. Kudos!!

  • Anonymous

I agree, good point, Cristian! And your point extends to most of the glut wine ‘values’ that such ‘astute’ shoppers ‘save’ money on. I wonder if they feed their families table scraps and Spam (or even the generic economy versions of those ‘delights’). Dont’ get me wrong – there are decent low-end value bottlings (both domestic, and Int’l.), and even most of the jug wine industry is made responsibly, and quite palatable to those who like that kind of stuff. But many folks will INSIST on wine, AND set the maximun price at not one nickle over the cheapest wine available. THEN they expect it to be anything other than crap. Amazing.
I started in distribution nearly 20 years ago, and even then, I remember, Chile had me at Santa Carolina Res. S.B. It was one of my favorite wines of that entire year. ’bout $11, ret., then. Morande, as others had noted, is really good!, So are tons of others! Bravo, Chile!

  • acassis

Love the Mott sighting! I like the Kim Crawford as it's a pretty good deal for the price and I am a poor college student.

  • Randall

Is this really you… or did someone commandeer your computer to post a comment? (No really OOOOUUUUUUTTTTLLLLAAAANNNNDDDIIISSHHHH LLLLEEETTTTEEERRRRRZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!) 😉

  • KVM1985

    I like brown bags! Thanks!

QOTD: I have liked Nobilo sauv. blanc in the past and I recently enjoyed one from Touraine a lot but only remember where it was from. I'm not going to list any least favs, since I can't think of any right now!

  • zrm

    MOTTTT! yes!

Love the crush it reference on the chalk board. You can do more blind tastings

QOD: i dont know the names but i prefer NZ sav B fo sho

  • Woot! Woot! Humble!! Glad you didn't give up the show!! I LOVE the Mott Shot! Looking good!!

QOTD: I have been in search of a good one for over a year. Had an 08 Brancott NZ and felt totally dished. I did enjoy an 08 Veramonte Reserva Casablanca Valley Chile…but still none of them really WOW me!

  • I tasted a 2006 Robert Mondavi SB at a wine festival and it really was a stand out. I usually prefer the Sancerre style but the price point in Canada is atrocious. Gary, You know what you could do for me? Give this longtime Vayniac a shout out!!

  • thats a good idea!

  • elron

    Good ep Gar!

  • Love Sauvignon Blanc. I think I like it more than Chardonnay.

Normally I'd say my favorite is Loire style, but at the moment where I want to go for SB is CHILE – great aggressively vegetal whites. I like grapefruit, but I like fresh garlic more.

Closest I can come to a bad one, or at least one I don't want to drink, are the peachy (and occasionally oaky) California SBs that come off more like chardonnay. Even that seems to be a minority

  • troytee

    Mott extreme close-up is awesome

    QOTD: Least- Sterling SB
Most- Florian Mollet Roc de L'Abbaye Sancerre

  • Drew

Favorite Sauvignon Blanc is the one I don't have to drink.

Least Favorite Sauvignon Blanc is the one in my glass.

    (don't like the weed *at*all*!)

But then I like whites that age gracefully – complete respect to ageability. Riesling and straight Semillon in particular.

  • Michael C in MKE

Best episode in months. Keep it real.

QOTD: Suav. Blanc sucks. It always has and it especially sucks from New Zealand. Mix in a little Semillon and it's a great. Stick to France. Bordeaux blend whites. and Loire.

  • Good show — you took the humbling experience well, Gary! Favorite SB would be the Morandé Reserve I had in Chile last fall; I'm agreeing with all the people who are giving props to Chilean SB! Least favorite, not sure, but did have the '08 Stellenbosch Sauvignon Republic (was excited to see it at TJ's for something like $9) recently and thought it wasn't very good.

  • ilbee

I love Sancerre (and Pouilly-Fumè). Otherwise, I just don't care for SB that much. Can't remember even drinking one that was really bad, most of the new world SB's just aren't interesting in any way including NZ.

  • divyamistry

QOTD: Best SB – That one. Worst SB – That other one. :/
Sorry, don't drink much wine, and when I do, I don't remember their names. It's like watching Oscars. I remember who won and who said what for the duration of the show, and then next day everything disappears 🙁 A couple “show-stoppers” stick out obviously, and SB hasn't delivered that for me.

Fun show. And I'm glad the show didn't end!

  • QOTD: after all these years drinking and tasting a lot of wines, I still can't get enough of the N.Z. S. Blancs. I just love them!!! They are my favorite white wines, quality/price ratio is really unbeatable.
The least are those from Cali. That touch of “sunshine” (creamy? butter? oak?) is not a balance note that I'm looking for when I want to drink a tasty, fruity, crisp and fresh white wine to go with my light meals.
