Any Riesling fans, if they have not already, should go out and get and read “Reading Between the Wines,” by Terry Thiese. It’s a lovely book, and 3/4ths is spent in some way celebrating German Rieslings.

Great show! Happy New Year – 2011 !!

Hey enjoyed this show. I like the “nerd” shows, much as Alton Brown is my favorite food network host. Been off the wire for a while with too much work, but planning a trip to NYC so thought I'd check in. Gonna track down some leitz. I know nothing about world cup! I do like german rieslings. No life-changing stories tho. Not yet! See y'all at the store, Tues Aug 17 I think, maybe 7pm. Don't suppose there's convenient public transit from LGA?

Socker puts me ta Sleep, Golf puts me into a coma…. ;O)

  • MarcBelgium

I agree totally, totally, totally ……..

  • MarcBelgium

Very good show indeed. These are the shows why I love WLTV.

I know the Lowenstein very good and, I love the wines. Not only the riesling but also the 'sekt' (german champagne) made from Riesling.
On the other hand I'm very curious for the Leitz. I'm going to buy this one.

QOTD. Argentina. (I'm not at all a football fan, to be honnest I think it's a dumb game, but, I always look at the worldcup. I know, strange)

  • Randall

    Also Bbrrr…

  • TheSmirkingLurker

I like the bit about liking this show, not the bit about your claim that football is a dumb game. Just want to make that clear! Enjoy the Leitz if you can find it!

  • Lisa

I just finished reading your book. Great book by the way. This is my very first time ever watching a wine tasting show or video blog. I find the spitting of the wine into a football hat a little more than disgusting but whatever works for you. I had to turn from it although you are very engaging. I plan on employing the methods you listed in your book and thanks for all the great tips, my passion is printing.

  • It’s official. I am a schmuck with a side of nachos. I JUST got it. I JUST got your post. I feel like such a dumbass. You talk to me out of charity don’t you? *slaps forehead*:)

  • Randall

😀 No way!! I think it’s the other way around. What I meant by “learned by now” is that I, in my ignorance and haste, keep “misunderestimating” you. Only to be put back in line with humor and wit… I’m no stranger to ‘doh!’
With “chicks” like you around, I think the wine world is safe for now…

  • Good show, love Rieslings, but never seem to drink them enough.

QOTD: couldn't care less, just waiting for my phins to own the Jets just like last season

  • gotsha

GV, nice to see someone else who can't pronounce Erzeugerabfüllung.

  • TommyB

    QOTD: Brazil?
Riesling – ahh that special grape; my favourite whites, I know that slight off-dry thing can put people off but I've had so many enjoyable experiences drinking Rieslings – love em, what more can I say.

  • lol

  • tnx Thomas_DK

  • More shows like this are coming my friend !

  • Wino down! He was watching the PGA tour! Clear! *zap* Again! *zap*. Phew. I hate to see you when you watch Curling.

Random ? about what order to drink a couple wines for a big wine night this week for our group. We never splurge for wines like this, but it is a special occasion and I'm nervous about covering one up with another. I just don't have the experience with these wines, can anybody help me?

Sorry, long time lurker, first time poster…QOTD–I really liked Argentina until they I saw their draw just to get to the finals…Sadly, now I kinda feel like Brazil has an easier path.

    QOTD: ARGENTINA!

  • Charlotte_DK

Yep, back to basics and nerdy nerd. Love it. Riesling- my all time favorite grape. Trying to find the Leitz in Denmark, but often having a hard time finding the wines that U have on the show 🙁 I did find the Klaus Meierer though. Loved the acid in those. The only thing about wines in Denmark is that they are very much pricy. The one he talked about would be around 3 euros was 12 euros. Anyway love your show- maybe nerd it up a bit more. U never talk about biodynamic or natural wines. Could be cool if U started to talk about them more?

  • Allan

    http://www.atomwine.dk sælger Leitz

  • Charlotte_DK

  • Hehe, you don’t say 🙂

  • OldForester

…Fine show! I'd like to emerge from Lurkville to agree strongly with the others that appreciate it when you stick to the essence of your talents, i.e., Gary (alone) with some interesting bottles. It's gotten to where I don't open episodes whose description includes, “Gary…with special guest… .” I can't articulate why interviews don't work in this format…but they don't. Thanks for producing more shows in your classic style lately.

  • John__J

    qotd: not the U.S.
Found it interesting to learn that German eiswien's, whether riesling or not don't require as high a sugar level as Canadian icewine's.

  • paz levinson

I really love the nerds episodes! thank you for that. I am curious about grüner veltliner to, what you think about them? I tasted some Austrian wines with glass cork, 20 to 27 euros each, the producer is Stadlmann. It would be great if you cross with one of them. QOTD: ARGENTINA!!

  • TommyB

Hi there, my only suggestion (which some people may disagree to) is to possbily start with the oldest wine first and work your way up to the most recent vintage. Old wine can get quite sensitive and delicate as it develops, it may also be overtaken by the younger wines due to fruit ripeness etc. In my opinion I would start with the least “biggest” wines and work your way up – age before beauty perhaps! Hope this helps.

  • Hughes804

QOTD: Are vuvuzelas annoying ??? Brazil wins. Love the dry Reislings. Happy Fourth to ALL, Naples Kathy aka champagne lady

  • lau1

Atomwine har masser af lækre sager, mon ikke du kan finde en et par andre flasker at fylde op med? 🙂

  • lawrenceleichtman

Based on today's game Argentina is the team to beat. And Germany and Argentina play next. I once dated a Riesling but quit because she was too reserved.

  • What a fun show! I loved this choice for learning and loved your passion for the Leitz.

Commenting after the US loss to Ghana, that sucked.

QOTD: Now stories to share, sorry. Haven't expanded the pal to Reisling enough to have any.

  • thnx Paz

  • classic is coming on strong 🙂

  • romtina

QOTD: Argentina will win it all… My favorite varietal from Germany is actually Scheurebe, it doesn't always have to be Riesling…

  • Craig

Sorry I can't make the party, we're having our own blind tasting party here in MN that night.

  • murphone

    germany

  • Benjaminprice3

Thanks for the suggestion, Tommy. I feel like I've heard that too. I did wonder after the two older wines if it mattered much, except maybe to do the pinot next then the other four in any order…I would just hate to feel like I spent money on one of these and never really got all the bang for my buck, ya know?

  • ZachNYC

Good show. I like having a good Riesling the summer time. Being that I just returned from Germany, there were many good bottles had….though I can remember the names and didn't feel like writing them down.

  • Benjaminprice3

GV-I wouldn't get too down on the guests or the brown bag shows…I think these shows just serve a different purpose. These shows are interesting, and I think show off your wine chops for new viewers…I know when I first started watching, the brown bags helped me trust your palate for recommendations.

I think shows like today, particularly when you highlight a varietal or a producer are more helpful. These are the ones where the Nation expands its collective consciousness.

Your most helpful shows for actual drinking, in my opinion, are your “value” shows where you showcase wines with larger production…stuff we can more easily get our hands on. This is where I love knowing your opinion and recommendations.

I think we have all been in different places in the audience at different times, and I like that you work hard no matter who is watching. Keep it up.

  • The second wine looks like a winner, after your review. ( Also, I noticed the color had a very pale hint of pink/beige. )

QOTD: Who knows what team will win, maybe Germany, they're coming strong.

  • ewb

Great content Gary. 94+ it was been a while. Keep up the good work.
Way to move quickly with the camera Mott.
    QOTD: The Netherlands.
Have a bottle of Stein Trocken in my basement I am looking forward to trying.

  • tarany

i've had leitz wines before but will have to try out this one if i can get my hands on it.

    QOTD1: Argentina!!

  • Great episode. I really gotta try that Leitz!

QOTD: Someone from South America… I'm going with Uruguay!

  • A_S

Great episode! Love the classic WLTV shows!
    QOTD: Germany.
My Riesling “story”?: Not much of a story, but I have 1 bottle left of the 2001 Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese, that I'm looking forward to. Haven't tried that wine for several years so I'm excited to try it. Not sure how long I can wait before I pop it;)

  • lau1

Jeg har lige snakket med Atomwine og de siger at 09 udgaven kommer efter sommer og vil koste det samme som de andre årgange (216 kr).

  • plcb

    QOTD: Je ne sais pas.

We had Riesling with Thanksgiving. Hey, not such a long story.

I'm caught up with WLTV, yea!
