qotd: malbec – don't really like it, I prefer the Cab Sauvs coming out of Argentina myself

Love it how some say ''malbec is incosistent'', and they refuse to pay more than $15 for a good expierence.

Try grabbing only Cali Cabs or Left banks for $15 and see how consistent your experience is. Anyone also want your Malbec flown via private jet from Mendoza, and served to you by Robert Parker at your front door with Giselle holding a cracker with foie gras? For $10? Achaval Ferrer or Luca Malbec? Would that make it a good deal? Sheez.

Now doubt right now market is flooded by Malbec, and the prices have gone up, but that was expected as Malbec graduates from unknown to mainstream. The days of awesome and dirt cheap Malbec are long over.

ps-Remember Argentina had an economic crisis back in early 2001. Which following a huge currency devaluation, even the best Malbecs were dirt cheap, and thus they were a once in a lifetime massive value. The economy over there is doing much better than ours now, and Malbec demand is 5 times greater today around the world. Economics people. And add to that just your average inflation in dollars.

If you want the same Malbec quality you had for $8-10 in 2002, you need to be prepared to pay $20-23 now.

Just had a fantastic Malbec the other night: Broquel Trapiche, 2008 Argentina. Great value as well: $20 range.

  • Good episode. Verticals are always interesting. This one especially. I like the way you mixed it up, and started with the oldest bottle. You could be right about that wine not maturing well.

    QOTD: Malbec = Beef

I've had the Trapiche Malbec as well, and thought it was wonderful at the price point (only $14 where I'm at). I think I gave it 89 points.

  • QOTD: Malbec = first wine surprise of pleasuer

  • QOTD: Malbec = All tastes the SAME.

I know that is probably a gross over-generalization, but pretty close to true I believe…AMM

Watched after picked as wine of the month at WL, missed this in Julybecause of insane work mode in July-August.
I love the vertical tastings. That said, based on the results and your experience with the 03, do you think the winemaking is evolving or do you think that these are best drunk young?
I have to say, that if I’ve learned anything over the last few years is that I am not a fan of Michel Rolland. There has not been one wine yet he had a hand in that I was excited about.

QOTD: Malbec = my daughter’s favorite.
Tears weld in my eyes as she ordered a glass when at dinner last year (she lives out of state, and occaissionally out of the country). We were hitting a steakhouse with friends. She’s certainly much farther ahead in the game than I was at her age.
