line of the day – ‘It’s a bit like being the prettiest girl at an ugly school.’

Pretty average show because of the average wines. Most notable for Mott’s crazy move at the end (9.40)

Long Island- grew up in the PNW in Oregon, farthest East I have been in US is Missouri / Illinois border .. when I hear Long Island I always think of this Woody Allen movie where he said he grew up under a roller coaster in Long Island.. it made him nervous as an adult.

  • passion4wine

umm.. bummer, can’t watch it in Canada

I am from Wrong Island! I got married at Duck Walk Vineyards on the North Fork and have spent many a summer swimming in the Peconic Bay. I am glad they took home the blue ribbon today. The North Fork has been making huge improvements in their wines over the last 10 years or so. In 1997 Paul Pontallier, of Chateau Margaux, signed on as a consultant for Raphael winery, which is the Peconic region. They are using first growth vineyard and winery practices, give them a try!

    QOTD…. Longwood…..my High School

QOTD: Never been there. Don’t know too much about it. Setting for “The Great Gatsby”, an overrated book and writer, I think. Geologically, it’s just a pile of debris left by the glacier at the end of the last ice age. That’s really about it.

Oak monster doesn’t appear anymore. You settled into the goodness of oak! I like it.

QotD: La Guardia Airport! Been there at least 200 times, my favorite long island spot. (I’m not from NY, it is on long island, no?)

QOTD: Good Chardonnay… Really. We live here (LI) and go winery-hopping frequently. Do not try LI Red wines πŸ™ (In 20 years living here we stumbled on one good Red, Merlot in mid-1990’s). You may have luck with LI desert wines (late harvest Riesling; Niagara). Chards’ are typically good to excellent but quality at each winery varies drastically year-to-year for most. Peconic Bay is part of that trend (some years we loved them, some years ran away). Two wineries worth trying are Gallucio (formerly Gristina), particularly their top of the line Cru George Allaire (Chard’, NOT reds) as well as Wolfer. These two keep quality high year-to-year.
Not surprised at all with LI Chard’ winning, when they are good they can be World class.

Thanks. We know you don’t ‘love’ on the Chards, so, honest effort – “work”, even, on your part, if you will…! On that level, you tolerated ’em well enough, and in a typical show such as this, I can practically ‘feel’ what you’re tasting. Nice work, and often, makes me want to open something, just to sip along!

QotD – Jews! …. Just being funny. I was reading Gary Shteyngart, this afternoon. He’s very funny. But seriously, folks, Long Island? Such a ‘rich’ vein to tap! Good money people, bad money people, I think of Horatio Sanz doing Billy Joel on SNL…Lots of good peeps are from there. And lots more live there – it mustbee the life, but never been to…

Aren’t some good mussels from up there in the sound? Lots of seafood, in general, I understand! That’s awesome!

  • HEY! I’m an Islanders fan…

Great show, it somehow did not really matter that the wines didn’t bring the thunder. I liked the pseudo itchy and scratchy cartoon out of your wine descriptions as well, also a somewhat interesting twist at the end. Tried some Long Island GewΓΌrztraminers and a couple rieslings at the Unified Winegrape Symposium, was pleasantly surprised.

QOTD: see above comment, that is all.
