QOTD: Multi-personality disorder pretty well sums it up. I keep bouncing around like a lottery ball. I mean within the week I’ll go from Aussie Shiraz to Burgundy and then a side trip to Italy or Spain.

  • Jojoxoxo

This weekend the WWW (wine women and wisdom) group in Andover, MA will be having a Zinfandel tasting. On the list are 2004 Blaauwklippen Stellenbosch SA; 2008 Cline, 2007 Tobin James Ballistic and 2007 Brazin old vine Lodi. This group has changed my palate over the years. I think when you pay attention to what you are drinking, you have a better appreciation. Cheers!

  • QOTD: 2-3 months ago it all about the Rhone valley (South & North). From big northern Syrah’s to Chateauneuf du Papes. Now I’m back to french whites, Sancerre, Pouilly Fume, Vouvray, Chablis and Viogniers from various appelations. It seems to be flipping every 3-4 months or so between reds and whites. I love it! 😛

  • Jojoxoxo

…and if you are ever in the Boston area, we would love to have you join us!

  • castello

My palate is all screwed up. I can’t figure out what I like anymore. Sometimes I’ll open three or 4 bottles before I can find out what I want for the evening. It’s all your fault! I’ve expanded my palate beyond recognition. I was into the big ass wines then the dirty chalky wines and now some wines sit on the counter, taking sips daily, to see if it was the day or the food or what the hell is going on. Next thing you know I’ll be enjoying Pinot! I doubt it.

  • Yee-haw a brown bag episode – now to watch it!

BTW, notice that in the episode’s thumbnail, GV looks like he’s stifling a yawn?

  • SniffySmith

Love the brown bags! Fitting for a Thanksgiving show considering how many people actually cook turkeys in brown bags for the big event.

Glad Kmurph grabbed the Bogle. It’s tasty juice and for around 10 bucks it won’t hurt to try it. Drink it alone if you don’t want to be seen with it, you just might like it.

QOTD: State of my palate *clears throat* – My fellow vayniacs…(ok j/k). My palate is getting away from the big fruit bombs, oak monsters, and butter bastards that I grew up with. Give me the grassy Sauvingons, floral malvasias and viogners. Love any red with a peppery nose, some cedar, nice mouthfeel and finish for days.

  • Oh and GV, keep up the great work! I always get ‘miffed’ when there isn’t a WLTV release for a couple of days, but it’s kinda hard to bitch when I’m getting great content for free. Also is was awesome to see WLTV (and you specifically) mentioned in the latest edition of the SAQ’s (The Quebec Alcohol Board) Cellar magazine. It’s nice to see a government agency finally notice social media and its possibilities. http://bit.ly/a4CP2Q (Starting @ page 20)

Bring back Sir Gary for an under $10 show!!

  • And by doh! I mean woohoo!

  • Neil

QOTD: My palate trends to balanced more old world wines although I have been trying to sample some Zins in the run up to Thanksgiving. Seghesio actually did pretty well in a tasting Eric Asimov did in the NYT a week or so ago. I though it was in the 88 point range. Not bad if you’re stocking up for a large gathering. My wife can’t stand the over extracted raisiny way Zins usually are so we have zilch in the cellar.

  • re: to your answer of the QOTD -> Same here!

  • GV
Thanks for todays 4 Blind Zins episode….I luv these shows.

    QOTD:
I’ve personnally been drinking a lot of whites lately….. Discovering the NY whites,
I’m finding I like the whites over reds with my food.
And I’m always ready for some bubbles

  • ALLAN

    …just a great show…….

Love the zoom-ins on the brown bags!!!

Classic Brown Bag Show… the drawing was not bad G, could be a new thing for you… ? ;P

Qotd: My pal is beginning to like less extracted wines, like yours G. I’m enjoying more and more Beaujolais, partly because they’re better priced than almost anything out there. And price is a factor these days too.

P.S. please do a show soon on Beaujolais 2009, i hear it’s a super vintage… would really love to get your take…

    Cheers everybody! 🙂

  • ALLAN

    Awesome reply castello! :O)

  • Gkl

My palate is living in the past: overextracted reds and buttery chardonnays. 🙁

  • ALLAN

Yo G, this show means alot too, for all Vayniacs out there & me.

  • Gnbaiocchi

Gary – Where is the California Sierra Foothill love. Amador and El Dorado Counties are Zinfandel country… Seghesio makes great wine – great family!

  • Good show, seemed to be with you on zins, as they are tasty, but never seem too serious for me.

QOTD: My palate has taken a step back on the big reds and I tend to like a mix of old world characteristics and new world fruit. I am also liking high % new oak less and less. My white wine palate is pretty much the same as I like very mineral driven whites, but I am starting to really dig on sparkling wine which is a new thing for me.

  • LOVE the Brown Bag shows… Zin is in…

QOTD: Palate is on the new world Pinots right now… Sta. Rita Hills… just can’t get ENOUGH!!!

  • First, the Lions scared me too and beat the Redskins….

My pal isn’t all that complex. not drinking enough, but I’m tending to like a bit more veggie action and less fruit over the last year. Too sweet and fruity makes me want to stop cold after a sip.

Anyone have anything I should try?

  • Dcaragher

GV – Great show, going blind keeps it honest! Love the Seghesio Zin!

QOTD: Right now I am steering away from the super jammy, high octane wines! I am more into the subtle complexities, lower alcohol, and wines that have more character! WORD!

  • SniffySmith

Your palate is right where it should be! The best advice I ever got about wine was that it doesn’t matter who makes it, where it’s from, or how much it costs. If you like it, it’s good. You like fruit bombs? Great! You like butter? Super! Drink what you like and to hell with anyone else’s opinions.

  • Bryanpederson

I really dig the Bogle, so cool to see it on the show! I have been into the Bogle petite and the QOTD is that my palate is really gearin’ to the deep, dry, make you pucker wines…maybe it’s because i love dark rich black coffee….last time I ran into a fruit bomb it really ticked me off…yuck

    Great Show!!

  • SniffySmith

Interesting you dig the Bogle if you’re not into fruit bombs so much. It’s def. not dry, nor does it have much of a pucker factor.

  • TitanicJack

KMurp rocks! Great cross-section of zins to taste. Love the blind tastings. QOTD: full-bodied fruit bombs with velvety tannins. Neal, Shafer and David Arthur cabs; Chase zins; Tensley, Wind Gap and Mollydooker Syrahs. Yummy.

Gary, I know exactly how you feel about the rating system, and trusting your own palate, but when you’re giving extra points to wines just because you think you should, or because there’s a holiday coming up, etc. I think it only takes away from your own rating system you’re giving to us, and also makes us put less stock in it. Especially if someone is reading that rating somewhere and didn’t see the episode and therefore didn’t know it got a point higher because Thanksgiving was 3 weeks away, but knows that you’ll give extra points to wines based on that criteria.

qotd: Anything that’s new to me whether region, varietal, producer, is always a turn on. I like and appreciate both new and old world styles, but have found way more old world wines I’ve really enjoyed than new, and WAY more complexity for the most part. Really been into aged riesling’s and pinot gris’s when it comes to well known whites lately, and been really into Bandol and Rhones for reds. I’ve never been a fan of over oaked wines especially chardonnays, and I dont see that changing anytime soon.

Where is the Thanksgiving secret pack? Bring it!

  • ALLAN

“People tell me it’s a zin
to know and feel to much within
i still believe she was my twin but i lost the ring
she was born in spring but i was born to late
blame it on a simple twist of fate…”

  • Adam C

I am always up for trying new wines, but right now I am really into Chateauneuf and really anything Rhone. I have always liked the Bogle wines.

  • Brown bags FTW! I liked the last Seghesio vintage I tried. Great battle of Zin…

QOTD: When I first started, all I drank were BIG Cabs. I moved onto an Italian and Spanish wine focus for a while. Now, I’m big up on Rhone on the red side, though I had been drinking A LOT more white than I’m used to. I’m also trying a lot more different varietals as well.

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • BIGDOG

My palate is similar to yours and Josh Reynolds’ – I prefer Southern Rhone red blends of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, etc. like I used to get from your wine club – but can’t any
more because I live in Texas!!

  • Anonymous

Nice range of wines for the brown paper bags- thanks, KMurph!
QOTD: Hmm. Prefer decent acidity, minerality, fruit in balance, like to be able to taste where it comes from. My mood, my company, and what I’m eating factors in, though and could blow all of that out of the water.
Well, now, that was a pretty good non-answer; perhaps I should run for office…

  • SinZin

the same i say since the middle of the 90’s – looking for elegance – big bold and overripe is not always the best. talking with ted seghesio 1995 lead into these tremendous wines they made now. or look at biale, which i import end of the 90’s to austria, they do a good, perfect job. yes, its zin, its california, but with a good backbone from acidity, livley and very drinkable – unusual for most more of 16% alcohol. love this wines so much since this time. biale, seghesio, carlisle, orin swift and linne calodo or foru vines from paso. thank you for these tasting.

  • This is why I watch this show!!!! EXCELLENT! One of my absolute favorite episodes… you talked shop (sports), got into one of my favorite wines, talked holidays… it was a cozy episode.

Seghesio and Mauritson (not reviewed) are two of my favorites from Sonoma!

QOTD: My palate has been all over the place (in the four years I have been drinking and exploring wine…legally) and I would like to defer my answer for another five years. I know personally that I have wedged myself free of reviews–no longer scanning the aisles for Parker 94’s or WS 97’s. I like the big n’ bold to dainty and delicate, I am benefitting from more exposure but stay fairly consistent in preference. I still like what I liked when I began my wine quest but my base is growing.

  • BTW were is Gary’s mom?
No Thanksgiving in Sweden but we got a tradition in the south to eat goose now in november. Pinot is the wine most used then. Seghesio hmm, I can get that here 🙂
QOTD: Inbetween the really stinky old world and fruit bomb ala Australia. Actually I like the Rhone 07’s more then anything right now. Just had a Crozes-Herimtage 07 from Chapoutier that reeally combined my to current preferences. jammy fruit, and herby sausages

  • corkyL

I’m with you. I don’t like Turley nearly as much as I did 5 years ago. I’m tending towards those 12.5%s of yesteryear.

  • Slushpuppy

The Lions is the Jets Waterloo; if the Jets loose, forget about it! Go Jetssssssssssss!
    Smell it first.TR

  • Violetruby

I kinda swore off zin as a whole, thinking I didn’t like the entire varietal (is that possible?). Just had a Sattui zin that I loved (’07 Bar 49) and tried to buy more, but it’s all sold out. I’d love to find another zin that’s similar!

QOTD: As far as reds go, I like pinots and wines with a smooth, velvety finish best. I’ve been trying a lot of the “underrated” white varietals that you’ve recommended in past shows (falanghina, vinho verde) and loving those.

  • bradleypd

My palate is obsessed with Burgandy as well as Haut-Medoc wines at the moment.
