Solid – I love the way that GV still laughs every time Mott focuses in on a brown paper bag

QOTD: You say Barolo, I think IMMEDIATELY of the trip I took to France and Italy in 2009 which included a drive into Barolo, where we stayed *(for free)* at a beautiful guest house in the middle of a single vineyard for two nights. I tasted wines at the winery (Batasiolo) and toured the surrounding regions for restaurants (Bovio, and a small family restaurant in Alba) and sight-seeing. Amazing people, inimitable wine, phenomenal food (the first white truffles of the season!!) and wine pairings, and incomparable memories.

  • I think that is a universal problem. All the wines cannot be found everywere. I live in Sweden and of the over 4300 wines shown on this show I maybe could have bought 50. There are over 450 Californian wines reviewed by Gary and lots and lots of other US wines. Maybe to much american actually 😉 since those are the ones that is really impossible for me to get hold of.
Check the spreadsheet http://spreadsheet.winelibrary.com/ and watch all episodes 🙂

  • Hi Gary,
Don’t mean to be pretenious but it’s pronounced Monte -ZEH – mo- loh….it’s owned by the family of the CEO (and soon to be politician) of Ferrari.

To be honest, I don’t have this problem. And …… I’m living in Belgium, a land known for his beer and ridiculous politics. But, I have to say that I search the wines via Vinopedia and WineSearcherPro. Sometimes I have to import from France, Germany, Netherlands ….. and even once from Sweden.
I have to admit that the biggest problem are Californian wines.
But besides that there are plenty other wines.

QOTD. That’s an easy one: JOY!!!!!!!

Have you drunk great vintages of Latour, Margeaux, Le Pin, Petrus, Ausone, etc, etc..?
I know all matters of taste are subjective, but, really?? Better than Bordeaux? I’ve had ssome tremendous Barolo’s (that scored very high by critics) in my life, but the 1990
Haut-Brion simply blew them all off the table. It was (and is still) the only red wine that I PERSONALLY thought was a 100-point wine…still waitin’ for that 100 point Barolo! My palate, my opinion, of course. Hell, I once watched a woman turn down the
1982 Lafite Rothschild to drink more Yellowtail Shiraz. The white-coats took her away
    sshortly after…

  • Hey Gary

Good show – love the snappy format, love the wines; yep you are in the zone.

QOTD: The best red wines in the world.

    Cheers

“Fashion train?” Maybe South American Malbec qualifies lately, but it’s a dead heat between Gigondas and Barolo who has most missed THAT train. BAROLO is suddenly FASHIONABLE NOW?? And (have you noticed) alot of supposed educated “wine lovers” give you an empty stare when you even mention Gigondas – they must think it is some kind of VD or something… “Oh, MAN! Look at these underwear!! I think that chick gave me a case of Gigondas!!! I must say that personally, I’m with you – I’d much rather have ONE $40 Chateauneuf of higher quality than the Barolo…just personal taste… of course next week it could be reversed completely (and probably will).

Somehow my post just below didn’t end up where it should have: in response to Mattgmann on page 3. And dammit, it just ain’t the same!!! (Bawl)

  • Love Barolo but my wallet can’t afford it – this Christmas is a good time to open the 2000 Prunetto I’ve been holding on to! Safe travels & hope you post your Paris talk soon!

    QOTD: Italian Nobility

  • lucky you!

  • Anonymous

You say “Barolo”, I say “things that I want to try but haven’t yet because they’re too expensive”. Life’s a bitch when you’re 22.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Expensive, but totaly worth it!

  • Anonymous

I’d start with the Vietti Nebbiolo Perbacco or La Varja Langhe Rosso. Without the oak aging of a Barberesco or (especially) a Barolo, Nebbiolo can be a lighter, dry, slightly austere wine that’s great with a range of foods.

  • Gary, I am starting to really like your taste in these Barolos/Barbarescos. I have started to experiment with some recommendations from my local wine guys too. This varietal really seems to fill in the blanks on food pairings. Really a go to for pasta of almost all sorts, fish, pork , chicken. Good stuff. Keep tasting them.

  • Me either but I have been to Piedmont and seen the suckers. They are expensive and supposedly delicious. The truffle hunting process is crazy too. Try to youtube it or something because the hunt for those expensive forrest treasures is quite elaborate.
Barolo is super famous for truffles though… white and black. When I am out of CKC realm I will hopefully be able to put all my knowledge to the test and try one.

  • Yeah, it is hard to find value by the glass, even if you like the wines. The whole procedure benefits (financially) the restaurant/wine bar that is serving the wine, not the consumer.

  • You so crazy. Did you read Jay M’s recent article in the WSJ about Bordeaux and the revolt of the people? He says he is a lover but the current trend (!!!) is to dislike it.

  • Anonymous

wow those sounded like some serious wines. really need to drink more of those.
Qotd: They’re just too far out of my price range, me being in the ckc. that and availability is an issue in texas too, unless you go to the fancy wine places a lot which i don’t do too often. i do drink lots of stuff that is high in value to my pallete, like i love meritages from cali for that price to quality ratio.

  • Alexandre-CF

QOTD: Dark truffles. What a combo

  • Love the analogies, but Ray Allen can shoot better than Rondo with his left foot. Ha ha.

Substantial thunder from the Barolos! Nice.

QOTD: Osso Bucco, because they go together so well.

  • Yes! I just watched that episode! Mott spilled a glass of red on the carpet before the show and Gary makes him feel bad…haha. Gary said that his mom spent a ton of time putting his office together and gives Mott this puppy dog kind of “you’re guilty” face. Good stuff! Thanks for the response : )

    QOTD – too expensive…

GV, it is kind of a funny thing about Barolo, I can’t really get one for $10-15. So many other regions have that entry level available. Straight Nebbiolo tend to be more rare and still above $20, compared to a value Bordeaux…

As a side question, how sad is it that the Knicks have basically been unwatchable since 1999 or 2000…

Come on Gary I agree hating on the Pats but the Celtics!! There going right past that baby James and taking it to the Lakers this year. But anyway great show and QOTD: Makes me say and think of great foods.

  • :/

  • Reds fall into 5 taste categories: Grape, Pickles, Tobacco, Dirt, and Leather. All which I hate by themselves so adding alcohol doesn’t make them taste any better to me.

Sorry Randall. So far….Reds = Bleck

  • LurkerKing

I disagree with this 5 category theory. I had a red that tasted like bacon before.

  • Randall

There is WWAAAYYYYYYYYYYY more categories than that…

That’s like saying there is BMW, Ford, Chevy and Toyota. There are no more kinds of cars out there.
    *thru s.w.a.t. team’s loudspeaker*
Please set down the bong, and slowly back away, ma’am…
    :D!!

  • Dang it LK! I was going to use “Package of Bacon” as one of my next guesses on the challenge.

    Party pooper. 8-P

  • I’ve had beer that tasted like and smelled like bong water. 😛

I guess I’m tired of spending 15 bones or more on a bottle of red only to make sauce or toss it down the drain or 7 bones on a glass and not finishing it.

    Nice try though…..

Oh well… trust your own palate…

  • Well Belgium don’t have a state monopoly and you guys don’t have to pay tax and vat when importing. Thats’ a plus for you. Not having a goverment for 7 months, having separatists in the parlement is i minus. 600 different beer cathegories is a plus, two languages a minus. Close to France plus, ect.
Import a wine from Sweden? I didn’t know tha the state monopoly sold to other countries or was it a wine importer that reexported?

  • Randall

    Disqus error!!

  • Randall

    I LOVE bacon… Ian.

  • ALLAN

“I had a beer and now I hear
    you callin’ out for me…..”

  • ALLAN

NO! The error was you……… 😛

    Cheers Randall.

  • Moi? Stubborn? Mais non… 😛 Next time some else is buying… I’ll try.. 😉

  • Funny, I said the same thing you last night. *ZING*

(goch…this is why im going to hell…..)

  • Randall

Agree. One should NEVER try and talk sense to a stubborn redhead…
    😉

  • ALLAN

    I will say nothing..

  • ALLAN

When will we see a new show, from last week?
