I love Gewurztraminer but wine snobs seem to look down their nose at it. Great episode, love the mad little comments!

QOTD – I would probably call my winery Veit’s Vineyard after a town in Austria that I lived in.

I have started drinking wines from this region recently, although the last one was corked, more often than not they have been really good.

QOTD: My winery would be Long Lake Point… Its a very special place for me, my father would understand, but really hard to put into words.

QOTD: My winery would be called La Grosse Dinde (which is french for the large turkey)

Great episode, I’m heading to Alsace this weekend for the christmas markets and wanted to do a little research before to see if there are any must haves while I am there.

This is one of the best episodes you’ve made. You say some hilarious things in this one.

“I get a little oregano as well, and not the kind you smoke.”

    “Albert Mann, you da mon.”

I was hoping somewhere in the Video Library archives would be a tasting of anything made by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. I would say Gary’s overall assessment of this producer’s quality is absolutely correct. I have not had one bad bottle from this Domaine and several that have been of exceptionally high quality. In my view Z-H is one of the few bargains out there in the elite category.

I also hope to find some video of Domaine Weinbach, which is very reliable as well…even their allegedly humble Sylvaner, one of my favourite guilt-free “basic” wines. Great episode.

    qotd: Chateau Grapey.

Saw you didn’t like your pinot blanc on this one, but did like the Albert Mann gewurtz. Albert Mann’s pinot blanc that’s out right now is great.
Great epsidoe Gary, ever gonna do one on vin jaune’s, don’t think you’ve done one of those yet. A tasting of charbono’s would be cool too.

QOTD: If I made a wine I would definitely want the name to be reminiscent of Italy because there is nothing in this world that I love more than the country, language, culture, food, and wine of Italy. My name would probably be, “La Trinacria” referring to the Sicilian flag that features Medusa with three points which is an allusion to the three points of Sicily and I would use this as a three pronged approach to wine making:

    1) Being true to the land and the fruit
    2) Letting the fruit be the expression in the wine, no enhancements or “makeup”
    3) Selling the wine at a fair price

Gary, just recently (~6 montha ago) have really gotten in to wine. Luckily I found your site and have been going through all the back episods and really enjoy the whole thing and the learning going with it. The only negative is that most of the wine you talk about are sold out. I figure a couple of weeks and I should be through all 800+ episodes. I have been hosting wine tastings at my office every friday night, and it is AMAZING how much we all have learned. Being in the sticks (Wyoming) we don't have many opportunities to pick up nice selections of wine, so this has really been great.

Anyway in answer to the QOTD: since I'm a surgeon My first bottle of wine would be called Rusty Scaplel.

  • supertrirunner
