I am Portuguese, and Port wine has always been present in special occasions or just for a different finish for ordinary days.

My father had saved a Vintage bottle from 81 (but don’t remember the producer) but never had the chance to try it because he passed away. On the Christmas eve of 2006, one year after is death, me and my family opened the bottle and drank in his memory. I can tell you that it was one of the best experience my nose and tongue ever experienced, along with the warmth created along your body.

It was a great bottle to celebrate a great life, Port will ever have a special meaning to us!

Thanks Gary for showing how great this wines can be!

Hey, you have to taste Port(o) with some good creamy portuguese cheese for Serra da Estrela (mix goat, sheep and cow milk). I tell you that you will never forget!

Awesome episode Gary! I was wondering if there was a Port WLTV episode in the archives! I might have to pick up the 1994 Dow’s - I’ve been looking into picking up a bottle of vintage (after making my way through Tawnys, Rubys and LBVs) and this is a bottle that is quite available locally.

QOTD - Super Mario Bros. 3. No and ifs or buts about it.

from just the ones I can remember, it’s a toss up between mike tyson’s punch-out, contra, and a little something called Paperboy!

QOTD: Well, my parents didn’t let me get Nintendo - but I always went over to my buddies house to play NHL Hockey. I’d always make my team really slow and fat…so much fun!

Gonna get some port soon - are there any vintages that are in their prime right now?

Had some Port for the first time today, after a Christmas meal with my extended family. I had no idea it was SOOO sweet…I love it though, it’s so thick and complex. I had a very young 2005 Warre’s, I think, and while it clearly had alcohol in it, it worked very well with the flavors and was a lot easier to drink than some weaker drinks I’ve had in the past. Very nice, though I wouldn’t ever have a lot of it….too sickly!

QOTD: I never had a NES as a kid, however of the games I played, I’d say the original Super Mario Bros. The later ones were too hard!

They should just make a Wine Download page, where you could directly download all the wines featured on the site straight to your kitchen. Like Wonkavision. Except not.

P.S. Favourite NES game? Gauntlet Legends.

Awesome episode! I love Port. Vintage Port is not something that I have a great deal of in the cellar (need to change that). My weekday Port is any decent LBV. They are pretty nice to have celebrating the Indians trashing of the Yankees, for example. :-)

QOTD: Nintendo? What is this Nintendo you speak of? ;-)

And the marathon continues. I would have to say Bases Loaded was by far my favorite Nintendo game. Is it sad I have yet to try Port?

Sweet! Covering some more Portuguese wine.. Port at that! I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts! I must say Port is one of the only wines I’ve NEVER complained about. I’m just starting to open up to trying new things though… one thing at a time!

I’m not even remembering most Nintendo games other than Super Mario.
Port and Blue cheese (got to try the Roaring Forties, heard great stuff about it) yum. Have the Down 94 but won’t be able to wait 40 years. I would be 90 by then. Gary, have you considered getting Vayniac Riedel wine glasses for tasting our wine project? Would be nice to have one.

Damn, GV, you just opened more money in port than I’m going to earn this week.

It would be weird, but ever thought about doing a vodka show? (I really want to see more people tell the world that Grey Goose is all marketing and ads, not thunder.)

QOTD - Techmo Bowl, baby! Bo Jackson bustin’ plays for touchdowns even when your homeboy would choose the right play on defense. Come on. Love that game.
Port - Love that Graham’s ‘80. Haven’t had the Dow ‘94, but will seek it out. Cheers.

Wow - Two great things: Roaring 40s is amazing stuff (try it as a topper on a bone-in ribeye!), and, of course, port.

When I was born (1970), my father bought up several cases of port, with the idea that it would be served at various life milestones, one of which was my wedding in 1997. I invited only 40 guests, so every table was afforded a bottle. I recall the moving speech my father made when the glasses were poured, and the delight experienced by all when the wine was first sipped.

So, yes! Port lasts forever and is a great way to commemorate major events. It’s a great example of wine bringing people together, and enhancing the life experience.
