Liked the concept for this episode and am looking forward to the next few like it. QOTD: I dont drink out too often, as the price is obviously inflated. I usually enjoy a good dessert wine after my meal, and the place where I have enjoyed wine the most is again Cafe Juanita. Just all around flawless and never any complaints of any kind.
  • QOTD: Easy one, Dino in Washington DC takes the cake.
  • Dan-o
I lived in Winston-Salem, NC for six years before I moved back to the northeast. My wife and I used to eat at a restaurant called the Zeveley House. We got to know the owner and chef pretty well. Their basic wine list was OK. However, they had a reserve list that was pretty good and a cellar that had some gems in it.

They used to let me go down into the cellar, pick a bottle that I wanted with our meal and then drink away. I had picked a 1988 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe a couple of years ago along with a 1988 Leonetti Cabernet from WA.

OK. That should have read, "Cleveland, OH and NOT NYC". Doh! :-)
  • JayZee
Cool episode, but now I know why I live in Cleveland, OH and NYC!!! (Good) wines by the glass here in NE Ohio are about $10-12 per glass at MOST.

QOTD: Sticking with the Cleveland value, we have a number of restaurants here with GREAT wine lists such as Swingo's on the Lake, Giovanni's, and The Vue. An excellent Italian restaurant that has a nice Italian wine list at tremendous value is Lago in the Tremont section of Cleveland.
  • SoCal
    QOTD: Bern's Steak house
  • Wow, those prices were ambitious!

QOTD - I've not been to a restaurant in the UK where I'd come back for the wine. In South Africa "CasaLinga" was great (in fact most of the restaurants there were cool for wine) and in Amsterdam "Toscanini" had a great selection.

My fave place to drink wine is a wonderful wine bar called D'Vine in Mesa, AZ, which brings all kinds of little-known wines to the table in flights so we can sample and enjoy something other than the standard big hitters. I discovered Four Vines Zins and Jeff Runquists Zins there. Can you tell I like Zinfandels?

Gary, keep up the good work. I love the show and learn from every single episode.

wish i had watched it on the day it came out I could have said Otter Pops!
    Is that a california thing?
  • Stu
I heard RAD, I am waiting for a RADOOL.
QOTD: Lake Park Bistro. Great bottle selection and they always have a Gigondas by the glass.
  • Thierry
Favorite restaurant for wine? These days no doubt the Pluckemin Inn (New Jersey).
Great list at amazingly reasonable prices.
  • Mason
    Great show, Gary.

QOTD: Erling Jensen's in Memphis TN. Their Som carries a fantastic variety, and all at fairly reasonable prices (for a restaurant).

Love the format of the show, lets do more. I would like to see if you could do this as you move around the world. Let Mott out of the store for a change and show him the world
  • That video by mark e was absolutely hilarious!
  • David
Mark E nice clip. Got to love it!!
  • Leio
Barberesco with fish?! Are you f@$#*ng kidding me? I don't care how acidic it is, those tannins would freaking kill your palette.
  • Darold
    QotD.(As promised).

-Trois in Atlanta. Why? Because I normally do not buy wine when I go out. On a college budget, I'm sticking with water most of the time. HOWEVER, when i do go to a nice restaurant, and decide to fork over some cheddar (normally on a date with the girlfriend), I almost always trust the server/smoliers recommendations after we have placed our meal orders. The best so far? Trois.
  • Scott
QOTD: "Purple Wine Bar and Cafe" in Kirkland, Washington (also Woodinville and Seattle). Huge reasonably-priced by-the-glass wine list and great food. Their wine & cheese flights are fantastic.
  • I had a good Rueda at a seafood restaurant recently - Bodegas Naia Las Brisas 2006. Generally when I eat at restaurants, which isn't often, I will try a wine that is new to me, when they have it.
  • Pastafari Pirate
Yeah, Mark E! Nice 'epilogue' episode! QOTD: I almost never eat at restaurants. And if I do, I don't drink wine - not at THEIR prices. I'll eat, and then go home and drink a bottle of my own later, at a reasonable price.
  • QOTD: I don't have a favorite restaurant to drink wine, since I had my daughter, I hardly go out anymore...LOL. Plus, the less I spend on food, the more I can spend at my local wine shop!!!
  • pforty
QOTD: Cesca in NYC! Tons of great italian vino per la bicchiere.
  • Sassodoro
QOTD. Some of my most transcendent wine experiences have been in restaurants. However, in Chicago, restaurant prices for wine tend to start at about 3 times the retail price (not wholesale price) and go up from there. Food without wine is a sad thing. Feeling ripped off is a sad thing. So I don't go to restaurants often.

If restaurants in this country charged more reasonable prices for wine, people would go out more, order more wine (and food), become more comfortable with the idea of wine as just the drink you have with dinner (as opposed to the stuff you have only on special occasions), and it would really change the wine world. How do we make that happen?

Sure, there are plenty of arguments for why restaurants have to charge more for wine than retailers do, but come on, retailers have to make a profit, too. Those arguments do not account for the magnitude of the price difference.
  • David MacDonald
QOTD: Don't have a favorite restaurant for wine. As long as the company is great the wine always tastes better.

    Great ending!
  • blobic
I liked the episode pretty much, the NY Tour is a great idea in my opinion! Also liked the epilogue!
  • wayno da wino
    GeeeeVeeee !!
Mooochoo Thanx for another cooool Episode!!

QOTD: Usually don't drink wine in restaurants.
If I do, its a glass or two, as long as da
"mark-up" is NOT tooo high. Got me own collection
in da Hizzy to enjoy wit me own glourious cookin'! :)
  • PaVo
    Great Show; HILARIOUS CLIP!

I really enjoy drinking wines in a small little place on the northside of Chicago called Volo. Great wines, Great food and fantastic unpretentious vibe. Rockin stuff.
  • Gr8wine
    Nice Ep GV,
    Wines without oak with fish?
I gotta admit for me it makes a big difference what kinda fish and what kinda wine. For whites with a substantial oily fish (like a tuna steak, chunka grouper or salmon), a well oaked chardonnay matches well. For most other fish I would agree a less oaked wine, white or red, is better.
QOTD: I haven't found one yet. Unfortunately I live in one of the myriad bedroom communities within commuting distance of Washington DC and most of them don't understand the concept of a good winelist or corkage fee.
  • ScottyB
QOTD: I'm going to break the rule and name two: EOS in San Francisco and Chive in San Diego.
  • Lisa Marie
There's a French creperie / bistro / bar around the corner from me (in Seattle) that has a solid and affordable French wine selection. It's called 611 Supreme, and I love the white burgandy they offer by the pichet. Speaking of pichets, Le Pichet (a more authentic French bistro that does its own chacuterie) has great wines. They had an awesomely fun Beaujolais Nouveau party, and I really liked one of their by-the-glass selections, even though I'm not a huge fan of beaujolais nouveau. More and more, though, my friends and I end of bringing our own wine to restaurants and paying corking fees.
  • QOTD - I don't really drink wine at restaurants. It's too damn expensive. I don't understand why i'd pay $9+ a glass when in some cases you could buy the bottle for the same price at the store.

    excellent episode

qotd: the brasserie in tulsa,,,there aren't many great places to drink wine in oklahoma,,,,
  • Jeff D.
Love the episode! This is really fantastic, one of my favorites. I'm looking forward to the rest of the week!
  • Irv
Good show Gary! Thanks for continuing to help expand our wine world.
QOTD:We have a pretty good wine selection for drinking at home. Usually when we dine out my wife and I eat at BYOB's so the wine choices are ours. Otherwise at restaurants serving wine we go with the food pairing recommendations.
  • jsuarez6
Very nice episode. I really like the theme.

QOTD: I just started going to a wine bar not too long ago. It's called Max's Wine Dive and is located in Houston, TX at Washington and Shepherd. It is very nice and they have a very extensive selection. It is a bit pricey so I only go once or twice a month, but it's worth it.
  • QOTD: I am currently accepting applications! It used to be the Vineyard Terrace here in Studio City CA... but they closed... :( tragic
  • QOTD: for a day out - Stone Road Grille in niagara on the lake. Their food is unbelievable, and they always have a wine from the niagara region I haven't heard of/tasted yet. in town: JKs Wine Bar, awesome food, interesting wines
  • Coachlen
The best restaurant in the Tampa Bay area to enjoy wine is Bern's Steak House. Hugh selection, knowledgable wait staff and proper storage all contribute to a great wine experience.

If I had a buck for every time I hear "basically", I'm retiring early.
  • Nesto
QOTD: Va De Vi in Walnut Creek California

Fun wine list, tasting friendly selections - trios of all different kinds and awesome food.
