I heard them talking about the separation on the Howard Stern Show.

Sorry for the gossip column here, but I cannot beleive this news report. According to this (CNN) Billy Joel and his wife Katie Lee Joel are separating! Who can know what is the real story, but it is certainly unthinkable as Katie Lee seems so sweet an likeable here. The article below states that "the singer is doing fine". That is good to hear, but---what about Katie?

Great show and Katie was probably the cutest guest you've ever had on your show. Her books sound interesting so I'll have to get one for my wife who is an awesome cook.

QOTD: I think I would make a strawberry rhubarb tart with a nice dry rosé.
  • Cindy Flowers
Stumbled upon your show and it was my first time. Loved it so much I had to try the " Donkey and Goat". Always been a cab and zin person but you made me thirst for the rose. Dammit I live in LA and the only place that had it was in NYC. Oh well.... I ordered 3 bottles. Should have ordered more. I loved it. My jones was satisfied. Now I have to order more. Tried "Coppola's Sofia Rose"2008. Liked that too. Good thing I am on haiatus. Tried to join Cork'd but was unable to sign in. Keep up the good work!

I enjoyed the show and the guest. She seemed quite cute also! I really have not had many roses, but i need to get the into my summer repertoire.

QOTD - I would want a "crusty" dessert and in this case perhaps an apple crisp.

A little late to the game here...just watched this episode last night. LOVE rose! Good call on the topic and Katie was great too! But I can't find Donkey and Goat in Chicago!! BUMMER!
  • Andy & Edie from MT
Katie Lee was such a great guest and you two worked so well together. Very informative and fun episode that gets us excited for summer roses. Thanks!
  • This was my favourite wltv episode so far. I really liked the guest and how you guys talked about random things other than wine. And how she suddenly ran out and came back :) Entertaining.

"...Perhaps a bottle of Rose instead..."

Awesome episode Gary! I know I'm a few days behind but i loved it.
Love Rose and love chef guests. Today's guest was no different! I'm gonna buy her book based on her performance today :) Already pre-ordered yours Gary!

QOTD: has to be just some sorbet with fresh fruit chopped up on top.. or even better berries, or Cherry jam! mmm.... If it wasn't a dessert I'd go sushi or sashimi... think raw fish/tuna goes really well with rose!
  • She's adorable but seemed lost. haha. Nice to see Billy make an unintentional cameo. Anyway, love rose wine and no better time to drink them then now, spring in the city.
  • Wendy
Just looked at the link for the donkey and goat rose. Which Lot # was tasted (Lot 1 or Lot 2)?

QOTD: Probably a raspberry trifle made with chunks of poundcake (or even some brownies).
  • BlueFrank
QotD: Fresh hot out of the oven - madelines, which I made for Momma's day recently. Rose is definately the Mother's Day Wine in my opinion.
Good show with a little sweet tension...
  • Rob C
long time Vayniac here...weak guest with weak perspective....Peter Mondavi was AWESOME!!! Need more guests like that or the old school fridays on the couch.
  • Beth
I have friends that freeze grapes for their wine then eat the grapes after you done. Doesn't water down the wine and helps keep it cold.
  • QOTD: Caramelized apples over vanilla bean ice cream. THAT is the THUNDER!!!!
  • Steak Monster
Never had the pink stuff, but I'm still working my way around the wine world. And a college kid doesn't get around to doing much cooking with wine so I gotta pass on the QoTD.
  • Meg
I love rose and am glad you covered *domestic* roses, as I still think they are trying to find their place in the rose world -- most still do not hold a candle to French roses but hey -- they will get there.

Re: the guest, I didn't know who she was until I read the comments. Honestly, I felt like she didn't bring any value to the shoe -- just my opinion. I don't think she knew anything about wine. Yes, it's neat that she's Billy Joel's wife, but should that really matter? Anyway, still liked the show. Sorry for hatin'.
  • I knew it! she was the host of Top Chef Season 1. I guess she didn't take the hint to gain more credibility on her subject matter.
  • QOTD: Easy, I would make a raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, blueberry, Sabayonne. Instead of using white wine to whisk the egg yokes and the sugar together, I would use rose and then pair it with the Donkey&Goat if I had the chance.
  • Sweet Lew
    Gary,

You should have asked the Piano man to sing " Bottle of white, bottle of red perhaps a bottle of rose insted!
  • Heather W
Katie is so cute, she seems like someone I would want to be friends with, in reality that is probably not likely, but you know, I like her personality.

QOTD: Warm and gooey peach and blackberry cobbler, with some vanilla ice cream. Yumness. Don't know how well that would really work, but I've been craving cobbler since I saw the Neely's doing a recipe on Good Morning America this morning.
  • Thanks for the Rosé episode that pink fans have been waiting for...genuinely lovely and honest guest. We are having a Rosé party at our house beginning of next month hoping to dispel some notions.
I had heard about that Donkey and Goat but not had any luck locating it yet in our neck of the woods.

QOTD: the dessert would really have to depend on the specific wine...we have a Concord Rosé that we made last fall, that although completely dry, has been a surprising dessert replacement.
  • AMM3RD
This was a fun episode. I need to drink more Rose. Rose with Dessert? Fruit Tart...AMM
  • Abbe Faria
Nice guest, very sweet. QOTD: Rote Grütze with Mascarpone.
  • Holladown
    >>>>>>>>>GV: How did you not crack up when the guest says that she likes the little ones and that the “big ones are just too much in my mouth”… I know I laughed on that one!<<<<<<<<<<

I lost it right then, Too Much.
  • victor
Wow. What a sweetie! I'll have to check out her book(s).
    qotd: Chocolate Amaretti Peaches
    Link it up!

  • GV: How did you not crack up when the guest says that she likes the little ones and that the "big ones are just too much in my mouth"... I know I laughed on that one!
QOTD: Who knows...thats a tough one. I gotta think it has to be something fruit based.
  • MaRc
QOTD: Dry roses probably will not pair so well with desserts, but sweeter roses with lighter style desserts, more like berry style trifles, jellies kinda thing rather than pies
  • Ken T
    Gary,

Never associate the Great Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer with Meister Brau or Black Label.
  • NZ Dennis
Love Rose - Love the guest!

QOTD - Rosewater Ice Cream with toffee/caramel sticks!
  • YoungDave
QOTD: Dry rose is definitely not my first though to pair with dessert. I prefer to pair with a beets salad (especially Anjou rose) or maybe with boquerones, maybe heirloom tomato dishes, gaspacho, etc. BUT if I had to pair with a dessert, maybe profiteroles with mixed berry coulis instead of chocolate, or with a berry compote dish, maybe a less sweet sorbet flavor with a herb twist (raspberry-thyme, strawberry-basil).
To all the rose haters- there are some AMAZING roses, from heavy- extracted- alcoholic and sweet, to light- crisp-and refreshing, and all have their place with or without food. TRY MANY DIFFERENT STYLES BEFORE PASSING DEFINITIVE JUDGEMENT ON ALL ROSE!
  • Great episode! Katie's adorable. You were pretty ballsy to call Billy Joel "sensitive" and "girly," Gar! Actually I saw an interview with Billy Joel on Japanese television and, to tell the truth, he came off as haughty, petty and insecure- perhaps that's what years of fame can do to a person. I'm sure deep down he must be a good guy to have landed such a cute wife.

    QOTD: Cheesecake!!
  • GV a couple of great ways to flavor and enjoy water: 1) Add a splash of cranberry juice to give unexpected crispness. 2) Add some cucumber slices to give some mouth watering bite...it's very good.

What's up with the quiz of the day? As for the QOTD: Use the rose to make a "brine" for soaking some raspberries, strawberries, and watermellon; let that sit for a few hours. Then take the remaning liquid reduce that down with some sugar to make a "simple syrup" and drizzle over the "spiked" fruit sitting on some angelfood cake to soak up the liquid.
  • Don
I enoyed the Rose episode. That was so cool that Billy Joel just walked down the stairs during the middle of the show!!! I must admit, I definitely have not given Rose its due and have been pretty much neglecting it completely. I will have to give it a whirl, especially if I can get my hands on the donkey & goat.

QOTD: I don't make desserts, but you tell me so I can try it out sometime!
  • Thought the guest was nice and genuine, which is what I appreciate in a guest.

QOTD - If the question is what dessert recipe would I pair with rose, well, honestly I'm not sure I would, but only because I rarely eat dessert and rose is more of a early-in-the-meal type pour for me. If the question is what dessert would I make that has rose in it, honestly I'm not sure I would do that either. ;]

    Raiders 16 - Jets 13
  • Great episode Gary, I can't believe the Piano Man made a slight appearance on the Thunder show, considering he's one of my favorite guys ever. Rose' IS totally underrated and there's a lot out there that are complex and enjoyable.
    QOTD: Strawberry Panna Cotta
  • I am a lover, an advocate, of the pink juice. I try to expose others to it, who often hate on it, and it's a shame. I am in the strawberry/watermelon camp as opposed to the raspberry/cherry camp with the pink.

QOTD: never tried cooking with it - esp. dessert!?
  • ScottEJ
Nice vibe to this ep. Very laid back. The rose' is on the radar and wine no. 3 is topping my list.

QOTD: Anything rhubard or cheesecake. Or rhubarb cheesecake.
