Oh, we laughed, replayed and laughed again. In all seriousness, we’re planning our own wine/ cereal pairing while we are visiting family for Turkey. Gary, you know that saying – “Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people”…’ nuff said.
QOTD: Tough one. Lucky Charms or Honeycomb = his, Corn Pops or Apple Jacks = hers. Frosted Mini Wheats = ours.

This episode has made me want to drink wine in the morning with my cereal now. I’m imagining a creme brule for breakfast. Can’t quite imagine the Reisling and Cap’n Crunch.

You definitly didn’t come across too schmaltzy – great work, once again the master!

You made me laugh & smile…thanks for that. And answered a question rolling around in my mind on WHY I’m always seeing “drink my wine with milk” in scripture! Cap’n Crunch with Crunch Berries, if I can find ‘em.

Honey Nut Cheerios hands down, for me and everyone who is important to me. I will never outgrow this treat; same goes for macaroni&cheese. Gary, I loved the way you shoveled the crunch, cinnamon, and marsh mellows. There was something very authentic and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory about your performance. Keep crushing it! DTAB

An eye opener, I’d safely say I would of never considered such a joining. Though, in hind sight, it does make an odd sort of sense.

QOTD : Cap’n Crunch through and through, I love the jagged rough of your mouth sensation. Couple that with fresh pressed orange juice for a bite, awesome.

You made a brilliant decision when you started filming Wine Library. You make it extremely enjoyable and I love watching each episode. This one though, is your best.episode.yet! Bravo! The thought of pairing cereals with wine is so foreign and cool to me. You would be the coolest person on earth to watch Saturday morning cartoons with :)

QOTD- Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch FTW! (I also like all of the cereals on the show today) I couldn’t eat it the way you did though. I have to have it really CRUNCHY. I’d probably add (cold) milk directly before the first bite. It’s dangerous for the roof of your mouth but I can’t tolerate slimy, soggy, cereal :p

Gary, after watching this in mid-October, I’m wondering if you’ve ever done a “Wine and Halloween Candy Pairing” episode? A quick search of the archives yielded no positive find. With Halloween right around the corner, it would be interesting to get your take on what pairs best with candied corn, candy pumpkins, and other traditional jack-o-lantern-bucket fare!

    Keep up the great work!

Gary – do you have any idea how many weight watchers points you ate during this episode? I was trying to keep track but lost count in all those bites. Plus, what a SUGAR bomb.

Mott should have told you there was a bit of lucky charms on your upper lip after sampling it. :)

QOTD – Shredded Wheat. I know – BORING.

    Gary, I love this.

Now I’m thinking, What pairs with Skippy or Jif – Merlot?

    Hey Gary,

know that this is old stuff, but you may have found out that you are a spot lazy in your pronunciation of Spätlese. That ä is actually an ae and so you should be pronouncing ‘Spaetlese’

Think of your days when you quietly thought not of wine and say:

    sssh! pate lazy.

P, S. In answer to your question it is Captain Crunch. (regular, not fu fu flavors) I did discover when I was in the wine bushiness in my early 20’s in about the mid 70’s that Captain Crunch did particularly well with Spatlese and not Auslese when OJ ( orange juice, not Simpson) was not available at the time, I’ve never disclosed that till now. As far as Lucky Charms, had them once and referred to them instead of marshmallow bits, marshmallow shits. Well maybe it beats leftover cold pizza. For those of you who go by the old saying “There’s no such thing as bad sex or bad pizza.” I’ll just say that you haven’t had either and even my worst enemy deserves neither. For one Gary to another, I digress that eating those kind of cereals will lead to a diabetic condition. I stopped long ago. It’s not TOO late for you, but you should be way over it by now.

Whoever decided that wine should be a substitute for milk in cereal probably would debate the nuances in TV dinners.I once did a pairing of 1st growth Bordeaux’s with fast food What can I say? When the wine is free just the price of admission is fast food, and the fact we were bored, we have two excuses. The result was the Margaux went particularly well with the Big Mac. I don’t remember the vintage being many years ago, but I assure you I won’t be revisiting this test, I’m over it.

Hi Gary: I wasn’t familiar with the Wine Library until I heard you being interviewed by Scott Simon on Weekend Edition aired on NPR/KPCC in Pasadena California on Saturday, Oct 10th.

I will be checking in on your website periodically for more fun.

However, I must say that you stole my idea of pairing wine with cereal, which I discovered more than 20 years ago. You are a novice with only 3 years under your belt. My experience came about when I became an empty nester and a widow in the same year. Cooking for one was/is not fun. My daughter would call periodically and ask what I had for dinner (to make sure I was eating properly). When I told her it was either Cheerios or Wheaties, she would cry. So I told her that Chardonney went with Cheerios and Merlot went with Wheaties quite nicely. She laughed and we got thru the experience.

I hope to see you at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena on October 22nd.

    Cheers
    Carole

Not a fan of cereal, but enjoyed the show. I agree that WS scored the Riesling way too high. Haven’t tried the other wines. Thanks for doing the episode.

QOTD: Fruit Loops, although I never eat them anymore! There is a tasty blueberry/cinnamon one from Cascadian Farms, will have to try that with a chardonnay.

QOTD: Golden Grahams or Strawberry Frosted Mini-Wheats.

A few years ago, I was a finalist in a Wine Library contest. Wearing buck teeth, I gave a wine-tasting demonstration in which I paired Kellogg’s Froot Loops with what else — Mogen David Extra Heavy Malaga.
    Those were the days!!

I am way behind and just getting caught up and I thought this was GREAT! I LOVE Golden Grahams too, so Mott is my hero!!

I think I am going to have to stage my own pairing/tasting as well!

My boyfriend and I have just discovered possibly the most sublime pairing outside of Captain Crunch and Riesling: Oreos and a 2005 Font-Destiac Bordeaux. Amazing!

    Gary;

You continue to make wine more human and less stuffy. I love cereal. QOTD: it all depends on my mood. Corn Pops and Mini Wheats when I want something fun. I also enjoy the organic cereals available.

Alle Beste as the Dutch say.

You’re right, that pause in conversation was a bit shocking! I walked away, listening to this episode and, when it went silent, wondered if something was wrong with my computer!

Loved the episode. Way to keep it real. You did not do any of the fruitier cereals. What about Froot Loops?!

    QOTD: Crispix
