Line of the day, Sasha – ‘I nailed it’ Gary ‘No – you agreed with Robert Parker’

Good show – I like the way Gary has so much more knowledge and insight into the wines tasted but doesn’t make Sasha feel bad for not knowing so much. Classy

  • I can’ see how 1000 will occur on the 21 th. But never mind. There have not been a 2007 Bordeuax show yet, is it time?

It’s about time Sasha made an appearance. And he did not give too much grief to GV this time. QOTD – The Packers.

  • TheSmirkingLurker

    GV:

Sasha was in a great mood. Fun show. Wish the Brown Bags were a little more mixed, at different Price Points, for instance. With them all hovering around a similar score and a similar price, the show doesn’t put much on the line. Can a $20.00 cab win your affections over a $60.00 bottle? That’s where the drama is injected into a Brown Bag (BB) show.
QoTD: Pittsburgh is, unfortunately, going to win.

Just waiting a bit for some suspense… I’m too excited right no to say no- it’s still before kickoff, if you’re still interested BET ON. -5:52PM 2/6/11

Hey Conor, based on those varietals you have listed, I’m guessing your exam is with the Court of Master Sommelier’s. I’ve done the same thing, and this what worked for me:

1st off I recommend trying each varietal from as many places in the world and from as many styles as you can.
    2. Another thing that helped me is to do 2 wines side by side every night. For example if you have a bit of trouble distinguishing between some Burgundy Pinot’s and some Beaujolais Cru’s (gamay of course), buy a bottle of each and see/smell/taste/evaluate them side by side so you can pick up on their differences. Do this in every possible varietal combination that you’re not as confident with to help get a better handle on it. Also, say your having trouble distinguishing between old world cabernet and new world cabernet, buy a bottle of each, and taste side by side.
I found that tasting 2 wines together, especially ones that I wasn’t as confident about, to see their differences was way more helpful than just tasting one wine a night and having nothing to compare it to. I also found doing 2 and noticing the differences to be much more helpful and easier to focus on than say doing 4 or 5 different wines a night, which can be too much to really be able to focus on. Especially when your evaluating to find country/region/climate/oak aging or not/fruit/non fruit/ vintage/etc.

With all the laid back episodes we’ve been missing, I’d like to see the next one be WAY laid back, like on a hammock or something as opposed to the couch.

  • John__J

I’m totally happy with the 1000th episode not being on the 21st.
All that means is you now have 2 separate days 2 look forward to and celebrate-the 5 year anniversary & the 1000th episode, and not just 1.

Hey Gary, lets rock out some dirty french wines from Midi! Hope all is well brother.

Gary, if you play by “price is right” rules, once you are a penny over, it doesn’t matter how close you are!

    Good episode.

    49ers next year.

Allan, you have pigs that fly in Denmark? I would surely love to see that. 😛

  • I’m a 23 year old grad student just getting into the wine world, so would it be possible to do an episode on the in’s and out’s of tasting? My friends and I are getting into the show but need a little help! Thanks Gary!

  • It’s going to be a boring tour, he won’t have any competition!

Now perhaps “Parkerized” will become less of a common phrase thrown around in association with CA wines! (Fingers crossed)

Parker to stop reviewing CA wines (for the most part)

    http://www.wineindustryinsight.com/ex_nf.php?url=http://www.vinography.com/archives/2011/02/the_end_of_an_era_robert_parke.html

  • crazy… just read that on Vinography. Galloni gets the nod.

  • J Mascis approves these questions.

  • On the contrary I reckon it will be very exciting as there will be no big boss this time. A bit like when Sastre won 3 or 4 years ago.
personnaly I put my beer money on Basso who for the first time will have the tour as his primary objective

  • Anonymous

my first experience with papa V as a guest on the show. LOVED IT.

  • Anonymous

Will be interesting to see how it plays out. I think Parker et. al. will continue to have a similar sphere of influence, but it seems like the article says he might be passing the torch to some extent.

  • Anonymous

Brilliant show. I have nothing more to say. Well, actually one thing: you should do more brown bags with guests. It gives a great dynamic to how two people can experience the same wine in different ways, and let’s us get a better idea of how the wine tastes. More of that please!

And did you all see what happened at The Bridge yesterday? El Niño might have left, but that doesn’t mean much when The King is back. Money just can’t buy you class!

When did Elvis return? Nobody told me!

  • Hi There newbie 🙂
Start with cecking tha archives. It’s free. Start with no 148, you have it to the right on this page. Continue with 715 and 716 and on to 756 and 757 then back to 182 and 939, on to no 1 and then 417 and finally 568. That will have you learning a bit, not of the in’s and out’s but of the lesson of being openminded and trying differnt in any which manner.
    Cheers.

  • John__J

    Thanks Randall,
The pomposity that can sometimes run a bit rampant in the wine world is easily the thing about wine I like the least, and don’t understand the reason for at all.

    One word: excellent!

  • Great show as always with Sasha. Loved to see the 07 perspective. Was in Napa for some release parties this weekend and was amazed at the difference between the ’07’s and ’08’s. Both are great, just different with the ’07’s being a little more tannic and bold and the ’08’s more feminine.
As an additional vote, I really think Sasha needs to be on the 1k show.

    keep em coming.

He is staring at his watch over and over.. wtf? why do you bother , Mr Vaynerchuk?
