  • QOTD: Nuit d’Ivresse by C&P Breton in the Loire, we just ordered another case, maybe our 2011 wine, too! Also, 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir bottling from McKinlay Vineyards, one of the best regardless of price (++QTP). We always have a box of sparkling handy, Nicole Chanrion “Effervescence” seemed to be the one for 2010, from Beaujolais (KLWM).

If you’re not using whole milk you might as well not even drink hot chocolate.

McManis Cab is the house wine. http://cheapwineratings.com/2008/02/18/mcmanis-family-vineyards-cabernet-sauvignon/

    Only milk will do.

You got me started with Torrontes and I really like it…buy it frequently now. Also like (for everyday inexpensive wines) Estancia Chard and Clean Slate Riesling in the summer…has a bit of a sparkle quality…like Tinkerbell.

My 2010 wine is wonderful (and cheap !), :

  • Side QOTD: Milk all the way. I even go a little further. In terms of hot chocolate one of my best memories as a child was going to Le Chateau Montebello with my family over the Christmas Holiday and they used to serve you hot chocolate by their magnificent fireplace. The thing about the hot chocolate was that not only was it whole milk (maybe even whole milk mixed with cream – I wouldn’t put it by them) but they served it with a container of freshly whipped cream. It was so decadent and probably was one of my first awe struck drink moments in my life. This hot chocolate was AMAZING and it is one of those memories I will never forget. A long story short, whole milk, no if’s and’s or but’s.

Gary, Also very nice “push it’ by TLC plug. I loved it, now I have to rock that on my itunes.

Now that push it is playing, back to the QOTD the wine I drink most frequently, the past few weeks i’ve been really diving into this Martin Codax Albarino 0 http://www.saq.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=59301&langId=-2&parent_category_rn=&top_category=

I hope that link works, but it’s unreal, I mean, I generally have it with my salads at the end of the day, it goes well with cilantro, super high acid. I dig it.

QOTD. #1 Milk. #2 Whatever is open at the end of the shift! Don’t judge, its one of only a very few perks in the restaurant biz;)

  • QOTD 1: Hot Cocoa – I like a mix of milk and water with shaved chocolate to top it off.

QOTD 2: My go-to wine, which is odd since it’s a dessert wine goes to Vintner’s Cellar in Royal Oak, MI.

    Dessert Wine: Chocolate Kiss
Ruby red Port style wine blended with cherries and deep, rich cocoa.

This thick, deliciously tasting port is great all on it’s own or alongside a piece of chocolate cherry cake, on top of ice cream, or paired with any other chocolate.

Very fascinating video today. have only had 2-3 aglianicos, after hearing about them from Gary V on a prior show. I did not have a Taurasi, but will seek one out. I do love Italian reds.

My every day wines in 2010/11 are/were 1) Colossi — Italian Red Table Wine; and 2) Chateau Le Gris, 09 Bordeaux.

QOTD 1: Milk is best but I’ll take what I can get.
QOTD 2: I don’t really have one wine that I serve more than once. I love trying different wines and different wineries so it’s almost always something different.

  • DCBoudin

I forgot to say I definitely prefer milk with hot chocolate, grits, oatmeal and just about anything where there is a choice for water or milk.

    QOTD1: milk!
QOTD2: Montana Sauvignon Blanc, Michel Arcelain Pinot Noir

qotd: dont have a house wine, i drink on mood basis

  • Ryan Richards

SQOTD: I honestly have never had hot cocoa with milk before so that’s on the to do list now.

QOTD: Columbia Crest’s H3 and Grand Estate wines are always go to wines for me. http://www.columbiacrest.com/

Taurasi is a new one for me. I don’t normally drink hot cocoa so I am not sure what to make it with. QOTD – I don’t have one wine, but my go to winery is Navarro in Anderson Valley. Another alternative is cote du Rhone.

  • I live in Sicily and the Mastroberardino is available everywhere and not that cheap. I have verticals of the Radici, Historia and Riserva from 1999 to 2003 and I have to say that I am always disappointed. Old world, vegetal, meaty, rusticy, good with food, but not by itself. Maybe I need to try it younger to get the fruit.

  • QOTD 1: With milk of course. No competition!
QOTD 2: Two wines. Bogle Petite Syrah (http://winelibrary.com/wines/60570-Bogle+Petite+Sirah+750ML) and Diseno Malbec (http://corkd.com/wine/view/38532-2006-diseno-malbec-2006)

SQOTD: With milk, a little vanilla and occasionally whipped cream.
I stocked up on Trader Joe’s Sipping Chocolate (seasonal item) so I could have excellent chocolately goodness though out the year.

QOTD: Gosh, I didn’t really have a particular favorite last year besides Riesling in general, but I did go through several bottles of Autumnus by Pacific Rim (a very slightly off-dry blend of Riesling, Chenin Blanc & Gewurztraminer) available in CA at Trader Joe’s: $5 and the 2005 Raye’s Hill Henneberg Vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir that I picked up for a total steal for $5-7 at Grocery Outlet in Berkeley, CA. I love when I can find well-made super delicious wines at everyday drinking prices. : )

  • You’re in New Zealand? How do you get the Bogle Field Blend there? I can find only one retailer in Washington DC who stocks it…
BTW, I have a wonderful friend who is originally from Auckland, now in Houston, TX She is married with a terrific husband and baby boy, lucky her.

  • GV, What do you think of starting a small vineyard in the NW Shenandoah Valley, own the land and farm equipment. What would you plant? Whites seem to rule but I’ve tried the Boxwood Topiary and liked it, similar growing area.

Interesting show – need to track some Taurasi down.

QOTD1 – it has to be a touch of hot water, to make a paste with the cocoa, then all textured milk (by using an espresso machine).

QOTD2 – Gran Tesoro Garnacha from Campo de Borja. Amazing value for money.

    Gary,

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your shows/episodes. I could easily sit in front of my desktop and waste away for hours watching WLTV. Thanks so much for expanding my knowledge base!

As far a hot chocolate is concerned, when I am at home I use water topped off with some milk.
I HAVE TO HAVE milk in my cocoa!!

    Milk !
Aglianico is one of my favorites! Nice to see it !

  • Hey Gary

Good show, thanks. Always good when you do something a bit more interesting.

QOTD 1: MILK – why would you ever bother with water????
QOTD 2: I really don’t have one as I try to drink as many different things as possible…
    Cheers
    Andrew

Ordered a bottle of the Di Paolo from my local shop. Thought it was going to be about $50-my industry discount. The bottle came in and it was $32.50-the discount so it turned out to be like $28.00 🙂 Needless to say I ordered another bottle immediately haha.

By the way, the Di Paolo Aglianico IGT is perfect to introduce a new world lover to Italian wines.
