Surprised to see the 2 top producers get canned but I love it, long live the underdog.
You should taste La Vendimia, a spanish wine that a lot of people are raving about for 15$ but I find a little blend and boring, not bad but nothing special.

Good episode. I remember a tasting I did early in my wine education that pitted Gallo wines against much higher priced smaller wineries, and of course the Gallo cleaned up. They are usually “correct” wines, typical of their type. I notice that you carry a few Gallo of Sonoma wines at good prices, and it would be interesting to see them compared to another winery with wines of the same year and appelation. Thanks for the education. Jim

  • Diego (comment #42): I’ve had several bottles of the Guigal 2001 CdP, and I can attest that it is superior. Every bottle I’ve had has been excellent. For the price WL has it for, it’s an absolute buy. If you want to try a CdP, this is an excellent wine to start with.

    GV,
Great episode…I would like to see you taste a great wine…93-94 score…that you, RP and WS all agreed upon. Preferrably a Red from first Italy…then second France..then third California.

TimF…congrats on the 7 years! You have to visit a vineyard called Palmaz Vineyards…Dr. Julio Palmaz (he invented the cardio stent) recently renovated an old vineyard and built a fantastic wine cave in order to age and store his wine. His wine is not the best yet…but the tour is great. I had the great opportunity to have a private dinner on his front yard with 20 of our closest friends. Very unique vinyard.

Jason R, post 50 – awesome idea. Laube hates BV and hates Montelena (I do have to admit I had a ’94 BV Tapestry Reserve last night that was horrible – corked…or as Laube suggests – product of a bad cellar). But unfortunaltely for us, Gary’s QOD did indicate what wine IN STOCK AT THE WL he should review. Neither the BV GdelaTour or Montelena is in stock.

Gary, as a future request, we would be very curious to see you either agree with Laube on BV and Montelena or call him out.

For tomorrow – you can review the Pavie which is in stock!

Another great episode. I enjoyed an ’01 ch. la nerthe tonight, and it was delicous. im really starting to get into CDP’s and i agree with tony that the ’01 guigal was a great place to start.

QOD: 2002 Mondavi reserve for similar reasons as the BV Latour. Parker liked it and Laube panned it.

    Congrats Ray,now life really begins!

Gary how about the 03 Altos de Luzon. 17 bucks for a RP 93 pointer. #43 on the WS 2005 top 100. Let see what you think. BTW I have a case and really like it, however a bit young right now.

    To Colin D. Devroe:

Since you live in an apartment where space is at a premium, I recommend a Eurocave wine cellar, sold by the Wine Enthusiast. There’s a choice of sizes and since it operates the same way as a refrigerator, there’s no noisy cooling unit and it can be positioned practically against the wall.

    Gary –

Thanks for answering my question on WLTV. As a result, all of my friends have been calling to ask for my autograph. Okay. I’m kidding. But, thanks again. It was very much appreciated. I hope that wasn’t my 15 minutes.

Anyway, since we’re talking about kids and wine on WLTV now, I’ll share that my wife had our third (and hopefully last) kid on August 7th. That makes 3 kids under 4 years old… which makes my wife and I just plain insane. We’re done kicking out kids (I really hope), but I thought that I’d share with you that when each of our kids is born, as soon as possible, I buy them a few bottles of Lafite and Latour on future. 2002 and 2004 were reasonably priced, but 2006 may prove to bankrupt me. Of couse, what I do for one has to be what I do for all. I am just glad that we didn’t have a kid in 2005 or I’d be taking a second mortgage.

Please try Konigsschaffhausen Spatburgunder Baden 2003 – there are not too many German reds available in the US and I was wondering how this tasted.

Can you smell what the Rock is cookin’?

Gary, among other things, I believe you should taste that 6L. 88 D’yquem and invite some loyal patrons(as well as the wonderful person that came up with with this fun idea).

I think you should try a few wines that few of us ever get to try- namely the Bryant Family 1999, Harlan 2000 or La Mondotte 1996 or 1998. Or drink the 1986 Lafite 1/2 bottle. Follow up with a D’yquem 1989. That’s what I’d taste, and that’s what I’m waiting for you to taste!

Gary, I would like to see you taste your 1995 Stags Leap Cask23 and put it up against the 1985 Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Lets re-visit the 1976 Paris/Cali. tasting that rocked the wine world. I see you have them both in stock. This would be bigger than wrestle mania 1, bigger than the Hulkster and Mister “T” vs. Rowdy Rodder Piper and ….. I forget who!! And if you do this I WILL take the day off from work just to see this event first hand. So e-mail me.

Gary – In response to your Question of the Day, I’d love to see you taste and compare my favorite low priced Zinfindel, Rancho Zabacho Heritage, to the new one that Ian recommended to me, the Farleigh 2004 Zinfindel(good recommendation and great price, Ian!).

Also, loved your comments on screw caps and I agree completely. What is your take on cork corks versus the new plastic corks?

  • Way to go RayN!!!
Gary how about that picture? I still need to settle the debate.
I think you should try Cheeky Chick, Peeper’s blend. Let me know what you think. For the price…not too bad…
The Hulkster is a classic. It reminds me of when I saw Hulk pick Andre The Giant up OVER his head and body slam him in the greatest wrestling match of all time…where did the good wrestling go? The Four Horsemen, Midnight Express, Jake The Snake, Ricky The Dragon Steamboat, RICK FLAIR!!!!!!! WWWWWWHHHHHOOOOOOOO

Gary — I’m guessing that if you have a model of the Hulkster, you also have some NY Jet starting lineup figurines from the 80s. Maybe an Al Toon or Mark Gastineau. Also, what’s your favorite baseball team? Don’t most Jets fans also like the Mets?

I enjoyed Whitehall Lane, Stag’s Leap, Try Leaping Lizard in Napa its a great everyday Cab – I went to 8 wineries in a day, that were mostly the smaller wineries. For $5 Bucks you can usually sample several wines. It makes sense to share with your wife. To cut down of the cost and becoming loaded. They also have a train that goes to the wineries Good Luck

Ray N Congrats enjoy every moment.

Gary, wasn’t mad about the lost questions, just disappointed.

How about a line up of Prosecco’s.

When are you going to do the next “taste at home” episode? It’s more educational to see if we are finding anything in the wine that you are mentioning. You’ll have to pre-list the wines so those of us out of driving and shipping range can search the wines out.

“Again, a very burnt wood nose, like a forest fire, you know, you’re hanging out with friends…” Gotta love it.

    Jaye (comment #39) —

I think it’s perfectly acceptable to ask for a contribution when hosting a wine tasting with friends. I host one monthly where a group of us get together and taste eight different wines of a similar theme, and I’ll just divide the wine bill by the number of people (usually around $30 each). If the wines are truly top-shelf, I’ll suck up a little more of the cost just because I don’t want to seem obnoxious. Everyone agrees there’s no bigger bang for the buck.

And no need to get too crazy on the food–crackers and a nice cheese usually suffice.

Let us know how it goes!
