Surprised to see the 2 top producers get canned but I love it, long live the underdog.
You should taste La Vendimia, a spanish wine that a lot of people are raving about for 15$ but I find a little blend and boring, not bad but nothing special.

Great News Ray! It’s the Best thing Ever!!!

I bought two bottles for my daughter of 2000 Borolo. I’ll give it too her on her 21st Birthday.

    Gary:

How about trying the Diamond Creek Lake 1997 Cab. At $5,000 a bottle, After the show it may make sense to work late and finish it! ENJOY! What does happen to the wine that’s not finished during the show?

Still no answer on the big decanter yesterday. Yes, CNdP are super underpriced. (don’t tell anybody.)

hey I’m curious about the ’99 Banfi brunello too. Someone just gave it to me for keeping their cat for 5 weeks while they were in Italy.

Another great episode, and congrats to Ray N.

Gary, I would love to see you taste the Cold Heaven Viognier Deux Mondes Saints & Sinners 2004 (http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=2603)

A joint collaboration between a Central Coast of California winemaker and a Condrieu winemaker, it is one of the best Viogniers I’ve ever tasted, especially for the relatively cheap price (under $30). I’m really curious to see what you think of it!

  • Hey, Gary: Can you try the Panarroz Red 2004? I have been drinking lots of wines from Jumilla, and I love the monastrells, and this one seems to have sparked some controversy among visitors to your site. It’s a 90 point wine according to RP, but your readers rate it as low as 1/10 and as high as 9/10. Would love to see what you think…

I think you need to bust open one of the ’82 Petrus’ you have in the cellar!!! Seriously though, how ’bout a verticle tasting of a single Napa cab? Like ’00, ’01, ’02 or something like that?

  • How about the Chateau le Pin 2000 vs. the Harlan 2000 Cabernet? A $2000 bottle of wine vs. a $300 bottle of wine. Both from the same vintage. New world vs. old world. Bordeaux vs. Napa. Classic match up.

You’ve GOT to be thinking that this would be a great event. You know it in your heart. 200-300 comments, easy! Gary, you can feel this one, I know you can. The event of the year at WLTV. Spread the word in advance:

“Monday, August 28st, 2006. The wine event of the year. Gary Vaynerchuk tastes the best of Bordeaux against the best of California. The two most expensive wines in their class* go head to head. Who will win, and who will lose? Gary holds the fate of these two wines in his hands. Can he handle the pressure? Don’t miss it. BE THERE!!!!”

You’re a star now. If you do this tasting, you’ll be THE super star of the wine world!

Do this episode and you’ll be on CNN.

Do this episode and the Jets will win the Super Bowl this year. You KNOW its true.

    *Available from Wine Library.

    Gary,

Not one person that I know, drinks white wines at room temperature. So who cares how it tastes at room tepmerature when you don’t drink it at 72-76 degrees? It would make more sense to me for you to review your whites between 60-70 degress where almost all of us drink our whites.

I’d like you to taste anything by Sine Qua Non, or Clarendon Hills Astralis.

your hulk hogan impersonation gave me chills

i agree on watching you taste a first growth bordeaux

  • BTW, I was at once saddened and heartened to see that you didn’t do the heat episode today. Saddened because you seem to be avoiding doing it. Heartened, because I KNOW that you must be working hard getting it just perfect before you do it. I’m touched, Gary, and I appreciate it.

Also, a huge thank you for doing CdPs. You know they’re my favorite wine, and I wouldn’t mind you doing CdP’s everyday…after you do the heat episode. 🙂

Nice episode Gary. Worst wine I ever had was a 1997 Domaine du Vieux that I drank last year. It was just awful — probably too old. I have a couple bottles of 03 Clos de Papes, so I hope I disagree with your assessment. CellarTracker.com has 64 independent (non-professional) reviews ranging from 89-97 points. I’ll wait a few years before opening my bottles and forming my own opinion.

QOD: I would love to see you do a vertical of a great wine like JP Insignia. Show us how to do a succesful vertical tasting at home — maybe some party tips.

On that same topic, if somebody wanted to have a vertical or horizontal tasting of great wines with friends; is it bad form to have a “fee” to help defray the cost of the wines, or is that generally how it is done? I like my friends but spending $300 – 500 on wines for them to taste; plus offer snacks, a clean house, etc is more generous than I can afford to be. What would you do (if you didn’t run a wine store)?

    Thanks!

    Gary,
Terrific episode! Once again you are streching me when it comes to my perceptions of what wine I will drink! I will try a Chatenauf Du Pape soon!
    Great stuff!
The one wine I would like to see you try on a podcast:
Mas De Daumas Gassac Red 2003.
    Thanks!:)

    Congrats Ray!

    Gary,

I know that you recently did a tasting of some Long Island wineries, which I loved, but was hoping that perhaps in a future episode you could focus on a few finger lakes wineries. Im orginally from WNY and have found some decent stuff from wineries like Hermann Wiemer, Dr Frank, Standing Stone, Lamoreaux Landing, etc.
    Thanks.

I already got feedback from Gary, but I’d like to hear from some of the viewers as to the best wineries to visit in Napa. We’re leaving Saturday morning to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary — also our first trip away from the kids. I’d appreciate any tips on tucked away places to visit.

Gary — thanks for answering my question. Still waiting for an explanation about the wall art . . .

Ray N. — congrats. My prediction? Your wine consumption will decrease dramatically for a few years after the baby is born.

QOD — go for the Sine Qua Non ’02 Hollerin’ M pinot. Can an Oregon pinot really command $195?!?

Gary, Eric – love the show. Long time listener, first time caller.

As always, great show… but between the rapping last week and whatever that was at the end of this show, keep the wine job.

Before the answer to your question, I have one for you: If I send you a terrible towel (something from a respectable football team), can you hang it on the wall for a day? Haha. The Herminator of the NJ Jets is OK, but no one can spit and yell at refs like Coach Cowher.

I’m a fan of Alsace Rieslings more so thatn the German ones, and I’m sipping on a 2000 Louis Sipp (WL Code 3913) which has a unique color and taste for the region. A red which I have taken a liking too is the 2003 Val Llach Priorat (WL Code 4715) except for the cork – in all bottles I’ve opened, the corkscrew has pulled right out of the cork without moving the cork, leaving me to dig it out manually (really soft cork – why is that?)

PS – Repeat in 2006/7 – One for the Other thumb!

For mainstream kinda places Rubicon Estate has an unbelievable castle style to it, but the people or more uptight. I’ve been to well over 100 in both valleys (Napa /Sonoma).

My suggestion would be to go to the Oakville Grocery ( http://www.oakvillegrocery.com ) get yourself some snacks, and buy a map. Then get on the Silverado Trail…unbelievable drive….and hit anything you think looks interesting, or you see on the map you like. For sheer beauty, you could stop at Joseph Phelps, it really is amazing. You’ve traveled to pretty much the top of the valley when you hit Sterling…stop in for a tram ride! Then you can come all the way back down Hiway 29 back towards town, and you’ve done the loop!

    Have a great time!

TONY #33 POST – YOU ROCK – THAT WAS AN AWESOME WRITEUP & PROMO!!!

JAYE – I like the comment on Party Tips.

Gary – How about some tips on how to organize a BYOB wine tasting event in home?

WINE FOR YOU TO TASTE: 2001 BV GEORGES DE LATOUR – (Spectator 69) THIS IS IN THE “CAT PISS” score category per previous poster. I have always been a big fan of BV Rutherford and have had several vintages of BV Georges de Latour (many on special ocasions) and I have not been let down yet – Even had one nice glass of Georges spilled on me at the Capital Grille in K.C. back in 2001. Did the aroma ever come out of that wine that night.

Which leads me to one last idea – How about a greatest wine story. Just an idea – Not a question…. ???
