Worst QOTD of all time, refused to see the movie then, still refuse to see it now.
I would’ve wished 0 but I guess there’s a lot of people with too much free time.

Gary – Great episode … thanks. I am going to try to find some Match to try/buy. I am also excited about all the 03 port I bought. As you would figure, I have not tried any yet.

Brandon – I agree with Joe … if you love wine, buy at as much capacity as you can fit/afford. I built a cellar six years ago with a capacity of nearly 2,000. I thought I would never, ever fill it … I just added three more racks.

Brandon: When one has budgetary concerns or is pathologically frugal, spending a few hours assembling a wine storage unit may not seem so bad. I bought a 200 bottle Koolspace unit through IWA Wine a couple of years ago. I waited util they had both a sale and free shipping and got the thing for about $800. No complaints so far, but size does matter. I filled it in no time and began stacking the overflow in the corner of the basement just like before I had the unit. Go as big as you have room and $$ for.

Brandon, just remember that refrigerators, freezers, and wine storage units are most energy efficient when full. Git ‘er done.

SOAP had it’s rating changed to R so it won’t gross more than 24 mil.

Funny, the “best nose ever” on WLTV reminds you of the dentist??? Not a pleasant thought for me…

As far as wine units, check out costco.com…excellent prices on Vinotemps including shipping which will save you alot.

Still waiting for an entire episode dedicated to port…

  • I have been working too much and then my damn computer’s power supply went to hell! Now that I have a computer that is running in spread out parts I try to leave it off as much as possible…making me late to view the WLTV episodes…
As far as the wine storage unit goes…I too am busting at the seams and have been looking for another unit. I have found some that do not use moving parts to eliminate vibration and noise but the outside temp increases quite a bit.
My question is…how critical is it for the wine storage unit to not vibrate? Will the slight vibrations from a condensor and fan harm the wine?
Someone please shed some light on this for me…
As for my alternative…I am looking into renting a conditioned storage place and purchasing the best and largest wine storage unit available and renting the extra space to some clients and friends of mine that have a similar problem. Problem solved for me and them…and I break even on my upfront costs after about a year…then I profit. Aaahhhh easy money 🙂

Just started to watch WL TV and im hooked. Great education. I watched 15 episodes yesterday trying to catch up. Keep it up. As a suggestion for a future show could you do a tasting of white loire wines. Tasting the 4 major whites might be interesting (sancere, puilly fuise, savennierre, vouvray), or a comparison of wines from the same grape . I think that Loire wines are an incredible bargain compaired to white burgandy or calif chard. Anyway, keep it up. bob

    Gary,

I wantched an old WLTV episode where you commented on a wine that was what you were drinking at home, “your go to white wine” at the time. I think it would be interesting for you to say from time to time what is in your everyday wine stash, what are your current “go to” every day whites and reds.

Have you ever had The Prisoner from Orin Swift. I would love for you to try it some time on WLTV.

    Thanks – Paul

Hi – very interesting to see you taste the port. For those of us who can’t afford vintage, how do the LBVs stand up, particularly the “traditional” (ie, non-filtered) ones. WL carries the noval (currently ’99); Warre is also good, I think.

I agree with you about Chardonnay – it has tended to become bland and it seems difficult to get those big, fat-tasting, barrel fermented chards that were once so common. Friends of mine in London have a saying when you ask them if they’d like wine.. “ABC” – anything but chardonnay. I guess this shows how easy it is to get bland stuff and pay too much for it.

Great sho tho and keep it up please – I’ll be visiting soon to buy!

Gary, here’s a good question. How do you handle decanting a wine to a byob, which is very prevelant here in the Short Hills area?I have started to open a bottle in my cellar 2-3 hours prior to dinning, then re-corking it.What are your thoughts?

If you plan on staying in your current house it may be worth building your own cellar. I built mine myself two years ago for about $4000, it has a Whisper Cool 3000 – so the temp stays at 58 Degrees. The room is 6 by 15 and will hold about 800 bottles. The book I used to build it is called “How to Build a Wine Cellar.” You can find it used oneline. I currently have about 120 bottles down from 200. We had a baby last year my budget was reduced, so I’ve been drinking more than putting in. Good Luck

    Hey Gary!!!

WHat happened to the “Jets to go all the way” post on the Mark Squires’ BBS? Did Mark delete it saying that it was too commercial?

Do we get free shipping tomorrow?

Can we get free shipping if we ask you to hold the wine until October (since I am in Houston. And the Texans have their best team ever. Though that doesn’t say much)

  • I have a similar question as Isg (#66). Like Gary, I like to bring my own wines to a restuarant. Even with a $10-15 corking fee, it’s a bargain and I get to drink what I like.

But I live by decanting. What’s the point in drinking a wine that hasn’t breathed? So I’ve been decanting the wines a couple of hours before we leave for the restuarant and then pouring them back into the bottle and recorking right before we go.

Your thoughts on this, Gary? Is this good, bad?

P.S. I’m eagerly awaiting tomorrow’s episode on the effects of heat on wine. Should be a great one! (You didn’t really think I’d let you get away without mentioning that, did you?)

  • Gary,

Looks like my original estimate of $18mm for Snakes on Plane was actually too aggressive! Who knew that it would top off at $15mm? My instinct were telling me this all along but even I started to believe the hype. This is huge failure for this movie despite winning the weekend.

Goes to show you that viral video, media hype and the hard core audience is simply not enough. At the end of the day you still have to have a good product and that is where this experiment failed. It is the movie that everybody wants to talk but how many people are going to pay up at the theater. Should break even domestically or push past its $30mm budget and do well in aftermarket on DVD.

WLTV is way better than SOAP because it is free, entertaining AND QUALITY content. 🙂
