Hi Gary – crazy, I know, but we just opened the 2004 this evening. And it’s still drinking very nicely. It has likely softened a bit by now, but the flavor profiles and the length are still there. We have 3 more bottles – so it will be interesting how long it continues to taste well.

You must have had a little too much wine today, there is no wat Pittsburgh is going to win. The Steelers are going to be bombarded by Culpepper. Without the refs on their side (yes I am a life-long Hawks fan) I think the score will be Fins 24 Steelers 13.
I am going to be drinking PBR for the game, the bar will not be serving any decent wine.

Nice Episode Today Gary. You referred to the 20 Rows as a “Nice Meritage” but in order for a wine to be a “meritage” doesn’t the winery have to be a) part of the Meritage Association and b)be made up of atleast 2 of the bordeaux grapes? To me it doesn’t sound like this is a meritage, but a nice blend nonetheless.

GV, I really enjoyed watching you taste a $200 bottle of wine… thanks for dipping into WL’s bank for us!

QOD: Pittsburgh 17-13… not sure now on tonight’s wine, will blog it later

OK, Chris got his score is just before me, so I’ll go Pittsburgh 17-14

Love the idea of a GV appreciation day – you deserve it! And what a way to celebrate.

You made the Leoville sound so delicious – – here is the key question: For those of us who don’t own the entire stock of a large wine retail store where cases of Leoville abound…..and considering that $200/bottle for the 2003 Leoville (or Ducru or Pichon Baron) may limit our private stock to 3 or less bottles of that precious juice……should we open it now and experience what you did – -or wait for it to evolve to something even greater for Thanksgiving 2020??? Will it get better? If you Gary had only one more bottle of this – when would you open it?

Gary, even though the Fins are nothing against my hometown Bucs (which BTW beat you Jets in the first pre-season game), I will have to take them against Pittsburg (which I hate). Score, Fins 13-10.
Got a question for you. I know that the Leoville is a $200 wine but why would you decant that wine when I don’t ever remember seeing you decant any other wine on WLTV?(at least not an episode I remember seeing). I know that you open the wines hours ahead of time but isn’t there a big difference between a decanted wine breathing and just an opened bottle of wine. I have always heard that just opening a bottle of wine does very little to allow it to breathe compared to decanting.

Opps forgot…….I will be drinking nothing during the game since I only drink wine before and during dinner during the week. Tonight I had a Castle Rock Central Coast Chard 04 with rotisserie chicken.

    Pittsburg 20-13. It’s a shame to use a spit bucket on a $200 wine.

As usual, insightful information. That bottle of Leoville would be amazing, but it’s not what we’ll be drinking tonight. We’ll probably go with some boring domestic beer. My guess for the score: Miami 13 – Pittsburgh 10.

    Gary,
As a Steelers fan theres now way Im going against them but its not going to be easy. My take Steelers 24, Dolphins 16. Drinking nothing—gotta work. I am curoius though; since the Chateau was your last bottle tasted and the fact it cost $200.00; why spit?

  • Gary,

Great episode today! I love watching you taste really expensive wines, particularly when you get totally pumped by them.

I know nothing about football, but I’ll pick the Steelers 21-17. Do I get to pick my bottle if I win? If so, I’ll take a bottle of the Cantina you tasted yesterday.

my answer: alabama of course…oh yeah, and yes gary is a little crazy about hte jets, but no worries, it’s okay

    Gary,

Good episode. I always learn something new from WLTV. I’m glad your switching gears on the your point system, but I do appreciate your philosophy on points in general, which I think is to demphasize the number of points and to develop your own palate. Speaking of palates I would like to see a follow up on the How To Taste Wine episode. The previous How To Taste was great but I think a advanced episode would be helpful to me and other viewers. In that episode you mentioned you could go into how to pickup more flavor and how to taste more. Maybe some more tasting vernacular, I know nose, mid palate, finish, what else.

    Thanks

    Steelers 17-10

    Hey Gary
    Great Episode tonight!

Score: Dolphins 21-17, without Big Ben they are in trouble.

I asked a question a few episodes ago and you never got to it, so I figured I would throw it out there again to see. Does your wife share your passion for wine, so is she not interested? My wife is not “into” wine like I am, but is very supportive of this great hobby. What is your wife like? What does she do for a living? I would love to learn more about the life of Gary V.

    Go Eagles!

an amazing episode. i give it 97. classic vayner—chuk. has me thinking more seriously about spending more than $40 a bottle on my hobby. no answer to QOD because 4 downs? c’mon. only pussies need 4 downs (CFL rules!).

Go steelers! Steelers will win 20-13. For the game I will be drinking the Jacob’s Creek 2003 reserve shiraz. I agree that it is tannic which seems to overshadow the fruit. I’ll retry it in 6 mths and let you know how it is.

Great episode! Miami wins 24 -13. I enjoy it when you can do wines at both ends of the price spectrum and find a gem at each end.

    Gary,

By the way think I know why your having GV appreciation day. Last episode you had a power suit on and a hammer on the desk. I think you had a meeting with some major distributors and used that hammer to hammer them into giving you some exceptional deals which you will be passing on to WL customers. You deserve that pat on the back.

    Thanks again

    Gary,

I wish I was drinking the Las Cases tonight becasue I am a huge St. Julien fan. For all those who have not tried the wines from this region â??please seek them out.â? Brainaire Ducru, Lagrange, Clos du Marquis & Gruaud Larose are just some of the best values in Bordeaux and they are all from St. Julien.

The game has not started and I am probably not going to get a chance to watch, but I predict Pittsburg winning 21-14 and I am drinking the 2004 Clos Mimi Petite Rousse Syrah that you recommended in episode #80. Nice wine considering I just opened it. Very fruity and a defiantly a good value.

    Look forward to tomorrowâ??s episode.
