EP 105 Four Viewer Picked Wines, Kinda.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Well the plan was to have four wines picked by the WLTV viewers, it didn’t work out that way. So we picked four other wines. Tune in today and see what happened. Also a new QOD.

You hit that one out of the ballpark. Great job – extra hilarious.

  • RCP

China… I’ve heard they’re producing a notable quantity for domestic consumption already.

  • Nice episode. Too bad I’ll have to wait for a couple raises before I can buy the Ramey. Maybe a client will throw one my way. I’ve had 2 different Rosenblums before, one was not bad I think it was a 99 Zin from a specific vineyard, the other was a waaaaay over the hill 94 zin that was somewhere between “not enjoyable” and “garbage”.

Nice spoof TimF, you had the Vayner-bob while tasting down pat. I used to like Charles Shaw, but I just can’t take it anymore. It’s a very, very, very good 3$ wine I’ll say, but I’d rather spend more and try my luck with something else.

QOD: I’d say China. I don’t know much about either’s wine making, but I remember reading an article about the up-and-coming wine industry in China. But GARY, since you’re making us choose between the two, why don’t you school us on both of those and search out some wines and taste them side by side for us? Well…? If I can find a wine from either place somewhere here in Chicago, I’ll pick it up…if it’s affordable and I’ll let you know what I really think.

    OK…GO BEARS.

What a bonus; we even got a chicken recipe! I would go for Chinese wine. They seem to do things pretty well at a low price.

I’ve actually had Chinese wine while in China. Not memorable in the least, but things are just getting started there…same with India. I believe Mexico is another up and coming wine producing country.

I liked this episode. But I don’t understand how you score a wine an 87, but you give it such an emphatic PASS. What’s the dillio?

Great job on that video Tim F. Very funny stuff…I think you needed to throw in an “asian spice” reference.

    Schnapps.

China or India? I must get out more often. I didnt even know they had wines worth drinking or even made. Thanks to Brandon for the Yankees comment. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lidle family; it hasnt been good the last few months for them and now this. Gary, very funny ending. What, no credit to the impersonator? Definitely a classic on the finish. 92 pts.

QOD: I had a wine from India at Spice Market (NYC). A chenin blanc, maybe? It wasn’t great. But I tried!

  • Jeff S.

    Gary,

Thanks soooo much for the Ramey tasting I asked for! Man, you made it sound good.

60 bones, huh? Guess I’ll have to make a bet with my mom (die hard Jets/Mets fan) on the next Jets/Patriots matchup. I’ve already won too much from my brother-in-law, that well’s gone dry.

    Nice work Tim F

I have had wine from China. It is terrible.

I have seen software coded in India. It is terrible.

    Hmmmmmmm.

    I vote for China.

Dan (in Houston. Formerly in Singapore. And Venezuela. And Denver. And Illinois. And Wyoming. And WIsconsin)

  • Rob M.

Very funny ending. How do people know that was TimF?
Can’t wait to try the Ramey. Had the Claret once, but do not remember it being memorable.

Wow, what an honor to be included in a WLTV episode. That certainly caught me by surprise…

QOD: I had a friend who worked in China for a while and he always tells me about some wine I have to try. But he knows nada about wine, so I don’t put a lot of stock in it. I’m going with the China because I prefer Chinese food to Indian food…

  • Matty Van, Rochester,NY

Great episode..saved me from buying crap

QOD – china or india….hmmm..isnt north korea going to nuke both of them??? does kazakhstan make wine if they did I would buy it

QOD – Sir James Chadwick..because he discovered the neutron…I dont know who discovered the neutrons predisessor the old-tron

    TimF..that was gosh darn funny

We always have some fun with 2-$ Chuck, i.e., including chuck’s cab in our blind wine tasting gatherings. Remarkably, it usually finishes in the middle of the pack, ‘outscoring’ or matching many of the 10-15$ cabs we are tasting. Had you actually included it in today’s tasting, it would have done much better than the Rosenblum and the Medoc, which I have had, and both deserve your rating. I would like to see you have a serious tasting of more upscale zins, including one of Rosenblum’s more serious efforts.

  • So Gary,

How’s the heat episode coming, buddy? Just about got it in the can, do ya? Sure have been waiting for that a lonnggg time.

Email me, and I’ll send you directions to my house. You look kinda scrawny, so I’m not too worried about my nose. I’ll just hit you over the head with a bottle of Two Buck Chuck.

I actually have a bottle of that at home. I’m waiting to do a taste off between that and the Kirkland (Costco house brand) Pauillac for my wine column. Yep, if you haven’t seen it, Costco sells Bordeaux under their own label. When I saw it, I had to have a bottle. Hopefully, for 25 bones, the Costco juice wins hands down.

QOD: I’ve heard little bits about both India and China with respect to making wine. I’ve heard more about India, so I’ll have to go with that – not that I’ve ever gotten within 100 miles of tasting any.

P.S. How’s the heat episode coming?

I would try wine from China…..Tim F thats a good job you did there, but you over emphasized the Vayner-clank….it usually more subtle. I am going to do a spoof and send it in, so you guys can tell me what you think.

    Thanks for the shoutout Gary

I’ll go Indian. I think I saw some effort a few years back to start switching some agricultural workers into the trade. I think much like the tech industry, they’ll apply all the Western know-how they can to an Indian terroir. Should be interesting.

Super time today — I can’t believe I am still watching this every day, but it just keeps getting better!

QOD #1 China . . . because they just seem to be very good at producing well-made items at low prices, they have a lot more land so they have more differing climates (suitable to different types of grapes), and they have a long history of outstanding agriculture.

QOD #2 (thanks for a hilarious spoof, TimF): Stephen Hawking (also in the running for best of 21st century).

What exactly is “garbage-oriented wine?” Very funny.

TimF — you got it wrong. It’s Slurp, Grimace, Pour out, Small Chuckle, then “Pass.”

    China
For Tim F. my favorite is Stephen Hawking.
I can’t wait to see the video from the tasting.
I hope it’s half as good as Tim F.’s effort!
