Gary, I have about 300 bottles now. No upity cellar, just laying sideways on a cool dark basement floor the old world way. 90% red including small winery cali cabs, spanish reds, and new zealand pinot noirs. 10% whites mostly Germay rieslings, and oddly some Niagara region Vidal Icewines .

That brings me to your QOD. I have 1 bottle of Burgundy, a 2000 Faveliey Grand Cru. It was a gift from my parents a few years back on their first trip to France after retirement. I have no idea what I have ( Of course I know it is Pinot Noir, I watch WLTV) . Should I dink it now or can it wait 3 years when I will turn the big 50. Sure could use some advice in this one.

wow. you guys are serious hoarders! 🙂 i go out once a month and pick up about 12-20 bottles but the “collection” never has grown beyond that. i make up a list of ones i want to get and then i wing it on a bunch of others….but i drink it all. i have bought some older bottles that have either scored well here with gary or elsewhere but i have never yet contemplated saving any. did those of you with so many bottles acquire this desire or just start out cellaring from the get go? so far i only have the desire to drink and the idea of saving a bottle for 15, 20, or more years seems to be something i can’t grasp.

    Gary-
I’ve got about 150 bottles, 30 or so made from kits and most of the rest from WL. Hope to get to the Super Tasting next year. We enjoyed going to the New orleans Wine and Food Fest yearly (your wines looked good, but food? Did you have Emeril’s, Commander’s Palace, Bayona and more of the most amazing food city in the country in NJ?) but that may be gone with the winds. Amost all reds, Cabs and Zins, but I do love the Tokays, thanks to you.

Man, shut out on the questions again. 🙁

I’ve got about 50 bottles at any time, have to keep the wine cooler full so it will run efficiently.

BTW, the music clip was George Harrison singing a Rudy Clark song, not the Wilbury’s. Here’s the ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Got_My_Mind_Set_on_You

Nice show. Looked like the tasting was fun. Hell I felt under dressed just watching it. QOTD: I guess Im waaaay behind with 19 bottles, but I’d rather put the money in my car. (the one on the missing gravatars). Mostly red with a few blushes (wifes). No Two Buck Chucks though. Still waiting on them.

Gary, How come it sound as though your milking a cow, into that aluminum spittoon of yours, when you slurp the wine? Why don’t you have a farmer on the show, with his cow, to compare sounds!

Additionally, I would recommend against sticking your nose deep into that spittoon grool while still sampling the wine. This can mix and mask notes.

  • Hi Gary,
My wife and I went out to eat tonight. We had an Australian Shiraz. It was opened at table side and we drank it as we ate. Both my wife and I liked it. I want to get another bottle to decant and let it breath for a while to see how it changes.

Thanks for the tip. I am still stunned at how quickly you responded to both of my e-mails.

Now for a gripe. 40 episodes ago (E #66) you had some paper bags on the table and said that you had a blind tasting coming up in a couple of episodes. That was 40 episosdes ago.

You can’t blame a blind tasting on the weather like a heat episode. What gives?

QOD: I have 3 bottles 1 Zin from a Michigan winery, 1 Reisling (same winery), 1 Cab from Ca.

Episode Idea. You did a New York episode, but how about other regions in the US. Like a Michigan episode (my home State), New England, NC (The Biltmore estate’s wine), etc.

I really enjoy the show. Playing TimF’s spoof… Excellent. It is great that you can laugh with yourself.

Anything new since episode #58 for a TV show?

    Jack:)

GV — One of my favorite shows yet. High energy, great wines, roaming clips. Definitely worth the price of admission.

QOTD – I am currently fluctuating around the 400+ bottle mark. 200 in a EuroCave and the balance in my basement. 98% reds from everywhere, ranging from $7 Spanish (love the Spanish bargains) all the way to the ’02 Insignia, ’97 Rubicon, and ’97 Brunellos. I drink, er, taste almost every night, so I am constantly feeding the machine. One day I realized how much I really had invested in my wine collection, and I actually asked my wife if we should purchase supplemental insurance in case something happened. The exchange went something like:

Her: How much have you spent on wine, anyway?

Me: Um, you sure look nice today. Hey, when do we get to see your folks again?

Here’s hoping our basement doesn’t flood anytime soon…

    Gary –

Thanks for reading my comment on the air. You don’t have to wait 7-10 years to come over and play with my kids. Come over and baby sit anytime. We have 3 kids – ages 3 (turns 4 on Saturday), 2, and 2 months old. Yes, 3 kids under 4 and I’m only 33. Now, you know why I am such a good customer. With 3 kids, a man needs to drink – A LOT. Anwyay, I can’t wait until tomorrows episode. I will pat myself on the back for being the inspiration, although I am sure that I am not.

Last night, my wife complained that I don’t watch any regular TV shows anymore other than sports. We used to spend time together watching a few shows together each week before the kids – and our 73″ HD TV. Anyway, I reminder her that I NEVER miss an episode of WLTV. I don’t care what anyone says, this is the best thing to happen to TV since color.

    Keep on rocking!

Oh… I forgot… QOD… I have a 400-500 bottle cellar. I bet at least half came from WL (not counting what I’ve already drank over the years that came from from WL). If there is a finer wine shop on the plant, I’ve yet to find it.

Bottles on hand: Red-over 200 White-37. My buying is getting ahead of my drinking. About half are from Wine Library and half are from small vineyards in the Paso Robles area where I used to live.

About 800 bottles – 70 in the house, the rest in a climate-controlled storage facility. Mostly Italian, Burgundy and Rhone. Less than 5% is Bordeaux or Cal cab.
also, can’t wait to see what the best wine no one has heard of is. I’ll take the 1999 Massay Rouge Reserve from Lebannon and, a little bit higher on the known scale, the 2000 Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco.
looking forward to watching joey harrington attempt to pass on sunday. jets start a three-game win streak!

Fun QOD – I’ve enjoyed getting to know everyone a little bit better through the wine they have, where they have it, what they have, if they buy to keep or just buy to drink – it’s all rather revealing!
I’ve got 100+. About 70% red and mostly “treasures” we’ve discovered in non-chain stores or carried home from overseas in our suitcases (very heavy). Always in the $10 range, $10 is our pricepoint goal but I sometimes succumb to what my husband calls “price-point-creep” and press the $15 – $20 envelope. We buy to drink – no cellars in our part of the country – but I’m finding we’re having to give up eating to allow for all the alcoholic calories of keeping our wine racks under control…
We really like food (!) but we also keep buying wine and I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE to spit. Sorry – it’s a girl thing. Tasting, then spitting grosses me out. I know it’s practical – and I’ll never be able to go to a SuperTasting! – but it seems too bulemic in nature. So, we taste, then swallow. Always. And that has consequences when a bottle has 800+ calories. Something’s gotta go and it’s not going to be the wine closet (formerly known as the coat closet, but who needs coats in central Texas).
