  • Hey Tony…

I’ve been up the hill many times to taste and I am very selective about which wineries I like and don’t like. The reason I say this is because I see the Windwalker in your collection. In my opinion that is one of the VERY few wineries that is doing it right. I’ve never had a terrible wine from Windwalker. There are a few that are doing it right, but I can name a ton that I think are missing it!

    GV,
Loved the clips from the super tasting. We hope we can make it next year. We currently have 194 bottles in our cellar: reds, whites and dessert.

  • QOTD: I just started building my “cellar”. I live in an apartment and bought a 28 bottle wine fridge which I’m quickly filling up. I have 21 bottles right now. I think I may upgrade to the 75 bottle fridge sometime early next year.

I think everyone should post their cellar’s if they have them up online. Here is mine:

I’m sure many of you will recognize a lot of the wines from WLTV. Just to brown nose a little more, I bought most of em from Wine Library.

GV, I have about 400 bottles in my cellar at present. I’m just heading out for a wine tasting with my friends ,we call ourselves the “Dead Wine Society” All wines tasted are bagged. I think I’ll take “The Grappler”

    Gary,

I have 600+ in my wine room; 500 from WL. About 200 that Dennis suggested. Last 3 times I was at WL, I didn’t see Dennis – that saved me at least $1,000. Hope he is well.

28 really good ones in a wine cooler, 90 in racks/boxes in the dining room. Realize I have a LOT of Spanish wine..the Tempranillo table was the bomb at the Supertasting.

All of the supertasting was great…nice episode Gary.

  • K Spengler

Gary, great episode again! Such a beautiful event you put on, congratulations. QOD: Currently there are 115 bottles in my little “cave” . A wonderfully personal mix of French, Chillean, Italian and some CA and Washington. Mostly reds, fewer whites, few Champagnes and 2 Roses. It makes complementing dinner with the right wine, a cinch! Alas, no Thai …..

  • Brandon,

I’m with you %100 on Windwalker. Best winery in the region as far as I’m concerned. The 2002 Lady in Red is a stunning bottle of wine. The 2003, unfortunately, is another story. When we tasted it last month, my first gut reaction (a la GV) was, “moldy pool cover”. Not good.

I agree that the vast majority aren’t doing anything interesting or even good. But I am surprized at the ones that are making good wine. Holly’s Hill (a couple of their better wines), Terre Rouge and Mount Aukum are doing good things. The rest rate a big PAZZZZZZ.

Gary, I have about 25 bottles: a mixed bag from all over the world including some from a recent trip to tuscany. Not much, but wine is meant to be drunk right?

Ive heard from someone that eating cheese will coat your tounge with fats, blocking your tastebuds from really getting at the wine…any thoughts on this?

    Tony,
Recently I did a little web surfing in the Sierra Foothills, just from my reading, an area of potential yet to be realized. I had noted the Mount Aukum Winery. Do you have any experience with Twisted Oak Wines? Their web site struck me that they are a bunch of folks having a seriously good time making wine. I also was intrigued with their methods – gravity fed winery, cap punchdowns only, no pumpovers, plus varietals a little out of the box.

I would be intrested in your take.
    Thanks.

    QOTD,

I have 30-35 bottles. I try to diversifiy as much as possbille. I have Bordeaux, Burgundy (mostly red, Rhone, a couple Italians, a couple Aussies and some California

QOD: I have about 40 bottles (Most $10 to $20). I have some 10 or so that venture into the $30 range. I have to administer oxygen to my wife if I go over $40. We accomodate now by drinking less frequently during the week, and spending more on the weekend.

I have found WL to be very eye-opening for new things. I just wish I could taste as fast as the new revelations come my way.

    Gary,

Interesting episode. I have to say that notes of “sugar” and “butter” or “creamy” are not notes I want to hear about a Sauvignon Blanc. I really need to try one of those for myself and see, but I’m sceptical from your description. I’ve had the 2004 Silex from Dagineau. It was world class, but a little over priced.

    Hello Mr. Vainchuck,

My friend is a caninophile, i.e. dog crazy. She shares all with her furry friend, including Bacchus’ gift. Some might think she’s crazy, but I think she’s cool.

Riddle me this Mr. slick; what would be a perfect wine pairing with Chuck Wagon. A 2003 Mazis-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes ? Or maybe Chateau Le Tertre Roteboeuf 2000?

    Let me know.

Your very humble and dedicated friend

  • Big Billy,

I haven’t been down to the Murphy’s area yet for wine tasting. Mostly, I’ve been around the Placerville/Fair Play/Shenendoah Valley area.

Their website does seem to indicate that they are having a good time, but are they making good wine? That I don’t know.

Hiya. I wish I had been able to attend the tasting, but I have had such a great time in Seattle this week, that I think it was a fair trade-off.

I am embarrased to admit I have 363 bottles currently in stock, and another 186 pending (futures, etc.). Pretty sick. Guess I better start drinking a bit more. I have wine everywhere. I have a 60-bottle wine fridge, I have a rack that supposedly holds 30 bottles in my basement shower-stall, but it is currently holding about 50 bottles. I have some screw-top bottles standing up in the basement shower stall. I have another 72 bottles in a rack I custom-built — in the basement bathroom, then another 12 in a cheap store-bought rack, then I have a number of cases lying around in nooks and crannies in the same room. The reason all my “home wines” are in the basement bathroom is because I can keep that room between 58 and 70 degrees pretty easily throughout the year. The “better” wines are in off-site storage in Westchester, NY — just in case I come to my senses one day and decide to sell some of these wines. I sure would love someone in NJ to start up a wine-storage facility. It would make my life much easier.

In case anyone is interested, here is my current collection (including pendings of wines I bought in response to this episode): http://www.cellartracker.com/list.asp?iUserOverride=907.

  • Joe P.

You have two bottles? Not bloody likely. I have about 30-50 at any given time. I love variety, but we’re not talking 30 bottle of Opus One. So, how many do you have Gary? And, because I’m curious… do you have a cellar in your home? Come clean! jp

Gary, I’m currently at about 100 bottles…mostly new world since my wife asked me to stop buying wines that “taste like dirt”.

It seems like more and more people are getting 50-100 bottle mini wine chillers/cellars. I think it would be interesting if you did an episode on “budget” ageworthy wines. Thanks.

You are WAY out of my league. You must be a doctor, a lawyer or a truck driver.
