What steps can be taken before purchasing a well-aged bottle of wine to help ensure the juice inside hasn’t spoiled?

Gary…BIG THANKS for coming back to do the taping. I am a fan of Australian Shiraz. I had the Thorn Clarke, and definitely think it’s a great bottle of wine for under $15. But what the hell do I know? I generally only buy bottles under $15. 😀

Question: Gary, is there any particular reason for bottle shapes? Some bottles have shoulders, some don’t. Some bottles are tall and slender, but you never see a short squat bottle–other than Port.

Its funny we drank the 2004 Thorn-Clarke Shotfire last night. It was sooo dark. Blackberry all the way. It really opened up after about an hour. Went very good with our London Broil. Can’t wait to try the ’05
QOD: Fav game show of all time is Press Your Luck. Come on you know the Whammies(especially the double whammie) was just awesome. His laugh was hysterical.

My question for GV is related to tasting & hope you can help me here. I find myself struggling with almost every wine in distinguishing different aromas. When I hear you or (RP or WS) describe aromas I get really frustrated because I try the very same wines & can’t come up with the same results. Last night was a a good example. The ’04 Shotfire we had was just popping with color, the dark berries coated my palate but I struggled with the aroma. Is there any advice you can give to help me improve that aspect so I can enjoy my wine that much more? How did you develop your ability to differentiate aromas? Is it just experience or was there something you did to train your schnazola?

Favorite game show: The Newlywed Game – the faces on the contestants after hearing a revealing answer by their spouse was always watercooler talk at work the next morning; followed closely by the one liners on Hollywood Squares.

Even tho my hubby says my rack is just fine, here’s my question for your contest: How do you possibly keep those pearly whites so white, with all the swishing, shloshing and sipping of red wines all day long? I have to break out the peroxide the next day after 1 bottle!
