    Hey Gary,

Just wanted to thank you for the Wolf Trap – had it last night and loved it!! Also, I now quote your scores to my customers when they ask about certain wines. Their ears always perk up….and I have to be honest, I don’t think they know who you are. Anyways….QOTD – A big fat mid-rare burg with mayo and tons of melty creamy, heart stopping cheese….mushrooms, why not? But for overall value I have to go with the double cheesburger from McDonalds. All that greasy goodness for $.99 come on! I score it an 87+.

    Adam from Austin

    Jets/Giants Super Bowl?

  • QOTD: Any burger that comes off a grill in the summer is on top of my list. Throw some ketchup, mustard, onion, lettuce and tomato on there and I’m good to go. I think it’s more about the atmosphere than the food itself.

Krug’s Tavern in Newark makes a killer burger. It’s about the size of a meatloaf, and tastes good too. Definitely something you have to eat just to say you had one.

  • Gary,

    That episode rocked!

    QOD:

The best burger I ever had came from a place called McMenamans in Corvallis OR. “Wilber’s Jumbo Deluxe Burger” has a fried egg right on top. Crazy Delicious!

  • The plastic cup is cool, but you haven’t used a crazy straw yet . . .

    Just kidding. Great episode, man.

The Simpsons cup was great — funny and a brilliant way to deflect criticism of the Riedel Vinum Tasting glass. But the fact remains that the design of the Riedel glass is unsuited to the kind of tasting Gary does. It’s fine for a winery’s tasting room where consistently stretching the number of pours from a bottle is important, but it’s dopey in every other way. As a drinking glass I’d give it a 78, and even for tasting with a small group I’d give it only an 84. Gary should reconsider and give it a VaynerPAZZZ.

Best hamburger? Anything but Burger King. (Do we have the Wine Library to thank for one less Burder King?) As restaurants, Burger Kings make great parking lots.

Question: What wine would you serve with White Castle?

Yo Gary, loved the Rocky intro…..that alone made this episode a 97 pointer.

I like my burger medium rare, with sauteed onions and cheese.

Sorry about the Jets. Nice run.
Remember – half of all playoff teams (and their fans) are disappointed.

The Tasting Glass – on WLTV it would best serve as a color measurement glass. Pour a stemfull turn it on its side against a consistent white or backlit background. Every sample would be the same size, then your second camera could super the sample instead of the labels (which are too small. Much better than waving a glass around and saying “awesome color.”

Burger – homemade from freshly ground chuck, cooked on a hot steel griddle (charcoal grilling doesn’t usually crust reliably), finished with sea salt and few generous grinds of black pepper, nice slab of sweet onion on top . mustard (Dijon is good) on the bottom, mayo on top, the bun needs to be made with a good tooth (but not a hard rool), and a Kosher dill pickle on the side. Beverage – a nice ice cold pilsner beer or ale.

Keep up the good work Mister Vay – ner – chuk

Great episode Gary. I’m always looking for good everyday drinking wines (i.e. under $10). I like Paringa’s Shiraz in this price range. I still can’t get into white wines as they remind me of drinking sprite or 7Up. QOD: non-frozen meat hot off the grill (using charcoal lumps) with a toasted bun and just a little ketchup and onions. Yum.

I have to draw the line at the cup though. Plastic makes everything taste worst. I still miss the better taste of Coke when it was in the bottle.

Sorry about the Jets 🙁 â?¦I thought of you as I left the house, and left my boyfriend watching the game…(I just had to go shoe shopping!) Keep the beard, keep using the glass you wish and please, please keep ignoring those that take this juice called â??wineâ? so seriously. Also good wine under $10, G2 Vinos Sin Ley, from Olé.

    Burger- Grilled/almost kicking.

Gary, et al, … Sorry about the Jets loss. I am not a Pats hater, but I was pulling for the Jets (underdog thing).

Best burger? Corner Bistro (NYC — 331 West 4th), Five Guys (DC – several locations), many others.

Great ep, If this bidding goes any higher, wltv may not be able to match the winning bid!! Sorry bout the jets, my dad is a pats fan and he was getting pissed that I was rooting for the j-e-t-s!! Too bad there’s no chance for the l-i-o-n-s to make any playoffs in a long while.

QOTD: Anything grilled, grilled bun, either bbq and cheddar or melted blue cheese with garden tomatoes, lettuce, and grilled onions! MEDIUM RARE OF COURSE! Gotta be a little bloody!

    Gary,

Now that the Jets and Giants are out of it what will you turn to for commentary??
QOD – At 2 in the morning nothing beats some sliders – that’s White Castle burgers, with onion rings. But if you want a great experience in burgers I am glad to see at least one other WLTV viewer (Gordyflaca #75) shares my view that the burger at DB Bistro in NYC is unbelievable. Great beef stuffed with Foie Gras…. As Homer would say ….MMMMM!

Will be stopping by this week to pick up some of your recent pick as well.

    Maybe next year, NickP

Great episode! Truly one of the best… Great energy, great topic, questions — this one has it all… If only the J-E-T-S could have come through 🙁

Oh well — much better year than anyone had expected. I had no expectations of anything better than 7-9 this year. A team on the rise…

QOD: Charred on the outside – Rare on the inside. With grilled onion, a garden fresh beefsteak tomato, and a little bit of ketchup. A good burger is heaven!

Best burgers in NYC: Shake Shack, Burger Joint (at Parker Meridien), JG Melon, Rare

  • Gary,

First time post. I was waiting on another lurker prize, but, hell, I want to join in on the fun NOW. Anyway, great episode. I will definitely try these wines if I can find them in Mississippi. I don’t think you can beat the Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling for the price. That is one fine wine. Also, here is a suggestion for a possible episode. I’m new to the wine world and I, for the life of me, just cannot pick out these notes you do. I know not everyone has such a refined palette as you, but can you suggest some tips (Teach us, oh Wine Jedi!) and wines that would be good for a newbie to experiment with to learn the art of wine tasting?

QOD – I like my burgers simple. Black Angus beef seasoned with salt and pepper with some garlic, American cheese, sauteed onions, Heinz ketchup, creole mustard and then I stack my fries on my burger. I prefer a potato bun, but a sesame bun is great too. If I’m feelin’ frisky, I throw some thick cut bacon on it.

PS – Sorry about the Jets. I was pulling for them. Now, pull for us. BLACK AND GOLD BABY! GO SAINTS! After Katrina, we need all the good news/vibes we can get! The Saints are a great way to give us something to be proud of and get our minds off of rebuilding, FEMA, crappy insurance companies and the upcoming hurricane season. Even if its for a little while.

  • You crack me up bro. Sorry about your Jets though…although, I’m kinda glad they didn’t win because you said that you would have announced the wines for a group tasting “in the nude” had they won. Pheeeww!!! Dodged a bullet there.

Mmmm…hamburgers…medium rare, mustard, lettuce, raw onion, tomato, cheddar cheese, no ketchup. Ketchup makes them taste sweet. And please…none of those “gourmet-fancy-burgers” where some great chef puts crap like foi-gras or something ridiculous like that on it. Burgers are for simply a back yard bar-b-que, not a 5 star restaurant. Thee best fast food burgers: What-a-Burger. There’s none of those in Chicago (or the midwest for that matter), but MAN are they good. Plus their sign looks like the Weezer logo. For the midwest, Culvers is pretty dang good.

OK…see you later, and again, sorry about your Jets. GO BEARS!!!

I like to mix some “Butt-Rub” dry rub into the meat before throwing the burger on the grill. MMM.

a couple of review ideas, but not to go with burgers (I will be trying some of your recommended Zins for that) … low cost whites of the no-chard variety

    wines I have tried:
[19120] Dry Creek Chenin Blanc (great pair with hummous and stuffed grape leaves)
    [4183] Hugel Gewurztraminer

    and ones I haven’t:
    [2994] Hugel Gentil
    [16397] Smoking Loon Viognier
    [7090] Chateau St Michelle Eroica

mmmm….burgers. This past summer I got a really good buy on a brisket. Got with the butcher and he ground that baby down to 10 lbs of burger for a cook out. He just shook his head, said something about how fatty it would be then went to putting that brisket to hamburger. gotta tell you…tasty. didn’t have any wine with it (suggestions?) but we did have some ice cold beers.
