Props for Lion-O. Thudercats HO! Never had an NZ Pinot, just the ubiquitous Sauvignon Blanc.

You know what is funny???? Gary made the EXACT same prediction about Chilean pinot. Go back to one of the old episodes from way back in the day to check it out. I am not disagreeing with Gary, I just found it interesting that he feels so strongly about pinot noir coming out of both New Zealand and Chile since the climates are obviously much different.

Anyway, loved the episode and love what Gary brings to the table. Nothing like putting it all out there. I guess we will wait and see what happens………

Good to see you do a Pinot Gary…How about “Merlot”??? You hardly do Merlot…Is it considered diluted Cabernet? It’s time for a good Merlot to emerge from the pack…

Iron Man = Cap Ripken Jr.

He just made it into the Hall of Fame yesterday on 1st vote. Speaking of Hall of Fame candidates, I have a trivia question for all you Vaniacs…

Q: What is another phrase to describe an Over-Oaked California Fruit Bomb?

    A: Wine on steroids

(Ed. note: If you missed the Hall of Fame reference there, Mark McGwire did NOT get into the Hall of Fame yesterday.)

    ’85 Sassicaia? you b*tch.

OK, i’ll give you Central Otago as a real terroir but show some love for our great countries premier pinot spots: Willamette Valley and The Sonoma Coast. awesome things happening there as you well know. i’m not a Morro Bay/Pasa Robles maniac but they grow some grapes there too.

    why should i import?

  • Mike G

Try Dog Point Pinot Noir from New Zealand

I forgot about the QOD. I have had the 2003 Stoneleigh pinot noir from New Zealand and I thought it was pretty good at the time. I don’t have any tasting notes on it but I remember enjoying it……

  • Only had a couple NZ Pinots a year or so ago. Both were entirely worth forgetting, so I did.

Methinks that you’ll need an on-location WLTV tasting in NZ to document your 2007 prediction, ‘yeah I said it, I was there too’. Its summer……and a short plane trip.

    Lurker NO MORE!!!
Gary, I discovered you about 3 weeks ago and I am hooked. Love the show. I have the good fortune of working over a beer and wine store, and the bad fortune of living in Maryland. I am always striking out trying to find your 90+ers. No wine allowed to ship to MD either. What’s a wine lover to do??

    Gary:

Great topic. Glenn’s comment re domestic Pinot prompts the following thought: How about a blind Pinot episode? Perhaps NZ, Oregon, Sonoma Coast, Santa Barbara and NZ? As diverse a range of styles that one will find with any varietal. Could you match the wine with the terroir?

QOTD: Pisa Range Estate “Black Poplar Block” ’03, Central Otago. No notes, but I liked it more than any other

Me thinks the IRON MAN reference….if you were paying attention yesterday…is due to the fact that G is taping multiple shows today. SO….we get to see if G gets a little loopy by the end of the shows.
My question…when you speak of “mouth feel”…not sure what you mean. Can you put into words what that means so I can indentify when I drink a particular wine?
QOTD…never had a Pinot. Seen the movie…never had a Pinot. I will make it a personal goal of mine to try one by the end of next week.

QOD: only NZ Pinot I have had was the Governors Bay that you recommended last year but I found it very light and simple … maybe I just need to try a better one (sadly with Pinot seems to almost always imply a $20+ bottle of wine) … are there any good regions for solid under $15 Pinot?

Ahh yes and please realize that within each of these grwoing areas there are hot spots for specific grapes such as Central Otaga and the Casablanca region of Chile.

Gary, I’ve had some great ones. The best was Nobilo Icon 2003 that got 89WS, really good stuff, I know you all carry it, so smooth and silky and great flavors. Also awesome, was the 2006 Brancott from South Island for only $10!, which I guess is the entire area of where they grow pinot and they collected grapes from 3 locations, which I guess can be better than 100% Marlborough. I also had the Kim Crawford 2005, which was also nice but Brancott definely wins for QPR and it was so nice even that young.

The last NZ Pinot I had was the 2004 Kim Crawford. Major Disappointment! Completely hollow and empty. Hope some of these other NZ Pinots live up to what you say!

I agree with LB in KS. Tough guy Gary did 3 episodes today which means mondays should be pretty good if he chooses to swallow more sips than he spits out 🙂
