EP 174 Rhone wines, Because I Like It

Wines tasted in this episode:

Well I am back and I am excited to be back. Today we look at four wines from the Rhone Vally mainly because I love this part of France and I wanted to try these wines! From Crozes Hermitage to St Joseph to Lirac these wines are interesting!

Welcome back, Gary! I spent a few weeks going through all of the WLTV shows, several episodes a day. And then, just when I got all caught up, you left! Talk about withdrawls!!! Heheh. (The re-runs couldn’t really satisfy either, as I had seen all of them just recently.) 🙂 Anyway, glad you had a chance to get away with the family. Very important!

Erik: My son is turning 18 in a week, and is all stoked about moving out and starting college. My daughter is 15 going on 30, and has a social life that would make even Gary jealous. Heheh. 😛 It’s been amazing reading all these responses from folks, reminding me what it was like to have babies. *choke*… *tears welling*… achem… sorry. (Wow, the Yiddish is contagious.. EPeH! Good one, Gary. LOL!) Anyway, Erik, basically I guess I’m just saying CHERISH EVERY MOMENT with that beautiful young gal! (The rest will come pretty naturally.) Good luck, and congratulations!!!

    Jaegermeister = cough syrup

Take some of that and add some anchovies, horse sweat and cat piss and you’ll have some really good old world top-shelf vino.

Erik, Congratulations! I have a 3 year old girl and the best advice I ever got is this – don’t get caught up in all the paranoid crap and don’t become a lame-o. If she stays up til midnight one day, who cares? If she likes to cuddle in bed with you guys, great! If you or your wife can get used to using a sling to carry her around, you can bring her out anywhere with you. We had our daughter sleeping in a sling while we were dancing at my brother’s wedding at 2 am! If she doesn’t have the $250 car seat, she’ll be just as safe. Just stay relaxed and give her (and your wife) lots of love. Books by Dr. Sears are pretty good (much better than “what to expect…” which really makes you think you’re doing everything wrong). Kids are amazingly flexible and will appreciate it if you treat them with love and respect. Life’s too short to worry about the rest.

Thanks Gary – good to have you back!

Gary: It’s great to have you back up north where the real weather is!

Erik, Congratulations. I hope Mom is doing well, also. I could give tons of advice, having had four children myself, but one thing comes to mind immediately, and I’m sure its probably already been taken care of by now. Shave. You can’t love on a newborn with stubble goin’ on. Ouch 🙂
Again, best wishes to you and your new family. It’s a great trip.

Hey Nico–nice post. Enjoyed reading the details of your recent tasting. Btw, I’ve had the Pillar Box and think it’s about the best under-$10 red in the world right now. Maybe other WLTV posters have better suggestions in this category?

ERIK! Way to go man. I got 2 girls and they rule. 2.5 year old and a .5 year old.

2 pieces of advice for you:
-Let the wife pick out all the clothes. Days when I get them dressed is a train wreck.
-Get Mylicon Drops Gas Relief (If baby is really cranky and not hungry, body really stiff, and really cranky.. possible gas. This stuff is money. We also used to put some one right on the Binky to get her to take the Binky. Win-Win: She get’s rid of the gas and takes the Binky in one swift motion.

Glad your back Gary! This place is just not the same without you!

    Erik;

Congratulations from a father of four daughters! Simple advice….Spend time reading to your children everyday; tuck them in bed everynight; hug them and tell them you love them, everyday.

Give them what they need…..sometimes not just what they want. Kids are so much fun; but also a lot of work. Best of luck dad!

Hah! I bought a bottle of the Lirac last weekend and drank it a few days later to see if it was worth going back for more. I always check out affordable Rhone whites when I’m in the Wine Library, but am often disappointed. Hard to find a good value. But this Lirac was really nice and a steal at the price. I agree with the high 80s score.

I was going to post a favorable comment about it in the forums, but decided to hold off until I could get back to the Wine Library this weekend and buy a few more for myself. Oops. (Serves me right for being selfish.) Cat’s out of the bag.

Nice to have you back, Gary. — Mark B

Welcome back.I really enjoyed the show.I love Rhone wines. I have the St. Joseph in my cellar. I think one of the reasons I like it is because it’s not a new world fruit bomb.It does have wonderful hints of leather, black pepper and dark chocolate covered black raspberries.

Erik…Congrats, bub. I have a 5 month old little girl, abnd let me just say this to you: It’s all over, baby!

She’s going to have you wrapped around her little finger in 2 weeks. Deny it now, but it’s going to happen – GUARANTEED.

    ADVICE:

Tip 1: Buy a book called Baby Bargains. It’s like the consumer reports of baby crap. It’ll save you big $$.
Tip 2: Believe it or not, your manhood will be determined by the stroller and daiper bag. New dad’s compare strollers like they do their cars, and you want to be driving around in something slick. And, you’re going to be carrying a daiper bag, and 99% of them look like purses – do what I did and get the army green Eddie Bauer backpack one.
    Tip 3: Sleep now…

Gary – I used to sell a Sicilian wine that had the same characteristics as the Crozes-hermitage. A Syrah/Cabernet called Sirca by Poggio Bortolone. Rich, buttery finish, but a salty, fishy bouquet. It had a mid palate of chocolate cake, but people could not get past the nose…Thanks for bringing back a memory…It’s what so great about watching these episodes; It may be a different wine, from a different country, but to watch you taste ’em…well, I had to share that…You really have a good approach to this..Keep up the good work! Eric, congratulations! All the Best to you and your family!

    Welcome back Gary.
Nothing says “GOOD MORNING” like a shot of Jagermeister!
I love that stuff. I know I’m in a minority. I also love black jelly beans, Dr. Pepper and clove gum. I gotta try the Chateauneuf Du Pape, now.

Congrats Erik, twice I wanted a son, twice denied… two girls! But now, I wouldn’t want it any other way. My advice, which applies to boys or girls, is this… they learn way more from your actions than they do from your words; remind yourself of that daily. Be the best Erik you can be, and they will be better for it.

Colts 20, Bears 13 bettors, take the under.

Welcome back Gary…hope you had a great vacation.

I KNOW you have better St Josephs at your store than the Guigal!! Cmon man!

Wish you’d thrown in a COrnas for us….next rhone episode maybe?

Also, I have never heard the Southern Rhones being called “feminine” especially a Vacqueyras, Gigondas, or CNdP!

  • My wife and I didn’t like the Dr. Sears book. Attachment parenting… keeping your kid in constant contact on your hip, sleeping in the same bed… it’s just too much. Gotta cut the cord at some point.

  • Gary, you must faking when you spit today. No college football can beat an NFL team. The Cardinals would blow any college team off the field. Maybe, maybe, Florida Basketball could beat the Celtics, but only once in 100 games.
