EP 174 Rhone wines, Because I Like It

Wines tasted in this episode:

Well I am back and I am excited to be back. Today we look at four wines from the Rhone Vally mainly because I love this part of France and I wanted to try these wines! From Crozes Hermitage to St Joseph to Lirac these wines are interesting!

WLTV breaks the Lirac barrier, with a white no less! I’ve had and loved the Kermit Lynch Lirac (Joncier, I think it is?) but never a white one. Nor a wine that smells like anchovies.

Nor Jagermeister, but I’d rather not go there. A devious German invention that straddles the line between liqueur and cough syrup.

It’s nice to see someone who enjoy’s their work so much, glad to see you so happy to be back. Oh, a ‘stick from the 1700’s’. They must have some pretty special trees up there in the Rhone, huh?

Since you’re calling out “big-jerk” (semi)lurkers, the answer to E’s question of the day is…headphones (noise-reducing variety?). And an ipod filled with laid-back music. And a comfortable recliner or rocker. My first kids were colicky twin daughters. Sanity was tenuously maintained with headphones and music to dull some of the crying. Best feeling in the world is watching your tired girl(s) fall asleep on your shoulder while you listen to tunes and eventually drift off yourself (wine optional). Best wishes, E. Welcome back G.

Welcome back GV. Congratulations Erik! I have a strange feeling you won’t be looking quite so perky in the months to come… 🙂 Best of luck and don’t forget to take good care of Mrs. Erik.

It is good to have you back LIVE again! Loved the episode. I am sad to admit, I had way too many experiences with Jaeger back in college at FSU. Thankfully I graduated with better taste buds. Back in Bobby’s hey day, I think we could have beaten a few NFL teams. But certainly not this year….

Thanks for doing Rhone wines! I will buy these immediatly.

    Congrats Erik!

It really is great to have a new episode of WL to watch! Welcome back G-unit.

Gary – I just noticed I have an older bottle of Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes Hermitage…1994…sitting in the cellar. What kind of life span does a Crozes-Herm have? Could this still be drinking well??

Good to see you back Gary! Congrats Erik!

Gary, I have some questions that may be fun for you to address on WLTV:

Do you drink the wines available on airplanes? What is your general opinion?

Although I’m new to wine, the few I’ve tried on airplanes have been yucky. However, I was on a flight recently, and a 2003 Wente Chardonnay was the one exception where it didn’t make me cringe. Drinkable but not outstanding. Overall, seems like playing russian roulette and wonder if it’s even worth trying.

Gary, I have to admit to watching you specifically in the hope that what come out of your mouth in jersey-speak is a close approximation to the actual pronuciation of french words on wine labels.
Heck if you can say it, then I can say it to my local wine shop owner.
Thanks so much for making me less afraid of wines from intimidating places like, well, anywhere in France.
I have to say, you make wine so much more fun than it would be on my own. Thank you for that!

  • Erik, congratulations! I’m not a dad yet, but soon…

Gary, welcome back! I’m all about the “NO pre-conceived notions”. In that spirit, I recently hosted a double-blind tasting with spectacular WL wines (single-blind for me since I picked the wines) with an old-world vs new-world twist! The summary of the tasting is here: http://www.tintorecords.com/tintos/37/double-blind-red-wine-tasting

    I hope you enjoy it.

    Great episode by the way,
    -Nico

Welcome back, Gary! I spent a few weeks going through all of the WLTV shows, several episodes a day. And then, just when I got all caught up, you left! Talk about withdrawls!!! Heheh. (The re-runs couldn’t really satisfy either, as I had seen all of them just recently.) 🙂 Anyway, glad you had a chance to get away with the family. Very important!

Erik: My son is turning 18 in a week, and is all stoked about moving out and starting college. My daughter is 15 going on 30, and has a social life that would make even Gary jealous. Heheh. 😛 It’s been amazing reading all these responses from folks, reminding me what it was like to have babies. *choke*… *tears welling*… achem… sorry. (Wow, the Yiddish is contagious.. EPeH! Good one, Gary. LOL!) Anyway, Erik, basically I guess I’m just saying CHERISH EVERY MOMENT with that beautiful young gal! (The rest will come pretty naturally.) Good luck, and congratulations!!!
