EP 174 Rhone wines, Because I Like It

Wines tasted in this episode:

Well I am back and I am excited to be back. Today we look at four wines from the Rhone Vally mainly because I love this part of France and I wanted to try these wines! From Crozes Hermitage to St Joseph to Lirac these wines are interesting!

  • Erik, some baby recommendations. There are a million things, and everyone has different favorites. But my wife and I found these indispensable:

    1. Snoogle pillow. This saved my wife’s sleep life during pregnancy. It was the only way for her to get comfortable. Best $50.00 I ever spent. http://store.babycenter.com/product/for_parents/maternity_pillows/3784

    2. Books. It’s hard to read lots of books, but you don’t have to read any of them from end to end. Just flip to the section you need at the moment. I highly recommend all of these.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0761125493/qid=1143378420/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-1224569-0804950?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

Baby Bargains. This isn’t just about saving a few bucks. It tells you the best and safest brands of everything. Great for when your wife does the baby registry. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1889392197/qid=1143378582/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-1224569-0804950?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

City Baby LA. From pregnancy classes to early schools, this tells you the best places around town. Really great way for new mommies to get dialed in. Maybe there’s a version for your city in New Jersey or wherever. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0789313472/qid=1143378695/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-1224569-0804950?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

Here’s another great book. It’s a quick read, and it’s for dads – which is rare.

The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips and Advice for Dads-To-Be http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0789205386/ref=pd_bxgy_text_b/102-1224569-0804950?%5Fencoding=UTF8

The next book teaches you great tricks to get the new baby to sleep at night. THANK GOD for this book. (Don’t have to read it until the week before the baby comes, and you can get the gist from a 4 page summary in the book.)

The Happiest Baby on the Block, by Harvey Karp. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0553381466/ref=pd_sim_b_3/102-1224569-0804950?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155

Finally, since everybody does pregnancy their own way, ignore these comments if you want. 🙂

  • Great return episode!! Erik, I’m neither a lurker nor a parent, but my suggestion would be to read “Daddy Needs a Drink” by Robert Wilder.

Jagermeister!!! Awesome descriptor Gary. I’m going to try that wine. Welcome back.

    CONGRATS ERIK!!!

I don’t have any little girl advice….I could only make apples w/stems on them.

One thing I would say is to encourge your wife to nurse…you don’t have to get up @ night!!!

    oh….and it’s better for the baby’s development too!! 😀

    Welcome back G-man!!

Gary, welcome back. Good episode. Okay, from what I’ve gathered from being a short term Vayniac, old world wines smell like dirty socks and new world are fruit bombs. Was I close? 🙂

How about an episode leaving Europe, Australia and California behind? Georgia, Virginia heck even Texas has wines now. Some are excellent and some are good for cleaning grout. I like the idea of local growers over the big corporate spoofs who GP or WS drool over. Blah, blah, blah. Anyway, that’s just me. Erik, I have no advice since we don’t have children except don’t let the TV or computer be a babysitter.

How about an show on chateauneuf du pape blanc. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews on them and
I’d like your take on them before I buy my first bottle.

Gary, welcome back. It is good to see you keep you priorities straight and take some time for yourself, because at the end of the day nothing is more important than family! Also gave me a chance to catch up on the WLTV episodes. Never caught up after the holidays.

Erik, congrats. Hope you never have to learn the meaning of “Little girl attitude”! Seriosly enjoy those first couple of months, they go by way fast. Take videos, tons of pictures, etc.

I paid 34 bones for the Milliere back when Parker’s barrel tasting was its only rating. I agree with your notes. 24 bucks is a good deal.

  • 10sGuy

Erik, you should start a new childcare forum ;-). I have a 10-month-old daughter and she is awesome. I wanted a boy at first (I thought) but now I cannot imagine having anything but a little girl. My advice – my wife and I read Babywise and it was really helpful…

Hey Gary, welcome back from my home state!

Great episode! I was happy to see a CDP as my last interesting wine was a Cannonau di Sardigna which is sometimes called a baby Chateauneuf du Pape. How does CDS compare to CDP?

As for baby advice, get one of those things so you can strap her to your chest. The one we had was called Baby Bjorn. Our first son didn’t want to sleep, so we would end up strapping him on and just walking around the house.

    Guy with the baby,

Do the “tummy-time” the doctor recommends – even if you can’t quite figure out at first how to put her on her stomach. Let’s see, what else…. Oh! Read stuff to her all the time. And see if the local library offers read-along / sing-along sessions.

Jon – Stay-At-Home to a One Year Old Girl

P.S. Gary, I don’t know a whole lot about wine, but I think the show is great. Keep up the great work.

  • Erik! Sweet Daring Fireball t-shirt! Gruber would be proud!

Does Erik’s question about online parenting resources count as QOTD? If so, I say read Dooce.

Welcome back Gary.Be careful with those muscles, you almost pulled a Raging Bull scene where Jake LaMotta flips over the dinner table. Thanks again for the free shipping. Took advantage and had the Three Miners Pinot Noir. Enjoyed it very much.
