EP 174 Rhone wines, Because I Like It

Wines tasted in this episode:

Well I am back and I am excited to be back. Today we look at four wines from the Rhone Vally mainly because I love this part of France and I wanted to try these wines! From Crozes Hermitage to St Joseph to Lirac these wines are interesting!

So glad you’re back. Talk about withdrawal . . .

  • CONGRATS ERIK!!!

Boy, I kinda miss the tame, respectful, poised, sophisticated person who hosted the early episodes that we have been watching for the past week and a half. Who is this nut? πŸ˜‰ MISSED YA. Good to have ya back.

Great episode. No edits. Warts and all. Love it.

Are you going to be getting in any Nalle Sav. Blanc? I noticed that the Zin is in. I’ll be getting the Zin, but would love to add some Sav. Blanc to the order (if yer gettin’ it).

    Welcome back, Gary!

I’m with you, I’ll be cheering on the Colts to victory this weekend: AFC all the way!

I went to a Rhone wine tasting last month and we only had southern Rhones. Granache is great, but I wanted to see what the French did with syrah. That comment about fishy smell is a little scary, but one of the Rhones I tasted had a rubbery smell to it. It was actually interesting in the flavor of the wine, so I’ll keep my mind open and try the Guigal St Joseph Rouge (I’ll keep an eye out for it on Free.WineLibrary!)

    Eric,

Congratulations! My only piece of advice is: Read to her EVERY night. Even when she is just home from the hospital. A parent reading to a child does SO much, for both parent and child, but the child has a better chance of becoming a reader if you do. Nothing like holding your child in your arms and reading.

    Gary,
There is no way any college football team would ever beat a NFL team. They play on two totally different levels. You call yourself a football fan? No wonder you like the JETS…
Although I have the BEARS, I hate Manning even more, so…GO BEARS!!!

    Hi Gary,

JÀger is made according to a traditional German herbal liquor recipe. It’s supposedly made from what smells and tastes good in German woods. Which makes me worry a little bit about German woods…

Erik – Congrats on your baby!! I hope Mom and daughter are both doing well! Charge up that HD video recorder and digital SLR, because you can never have enough photos. Hey- that’s a great idea. Why don’t you post a photo of your daughter in the forums??!!! I think many of the VaynerNation would love to see how beautiful she must be…As a medical doctor and father of three, all I’ll say is that the advice given in the comments above is really true. Spend a lot of time with your family. Read to her every night. And give her a sibling as soon as Mrs. Erik wants to!! Congratulations!

GV – Glad to see you. Thanks for the video re-runs. Way better than Gilligan’s Island re-runs. Especially the plant tour of the store. I’m gonna have to pay the toll and cross the Hudson to come down and see it sometime….Hope you had a great vacation!! Now let’s move on…

Hey, Gar’ – it sure is good to have you back LIVE – but pause-able! If it hadn’t been for the re-runs, though, I might never have seen the subdued, good li’l Gary, or taken that madcap library tour.

Erik – when our son was born, I knew nothin’ – NOTHIN’ – ’bout birthin’ or raisin’ a baby. I never even attended Lamaze classes – my wife refused “to sit on the floor with those teeny-boppers!” So all I can say is just spend as much time with her as you possibly can, and you’ll have a pal – and a daughter – for life.
I also agree with Orion Slayer about reading aloud every night. I always did that, and years after it ended, the night before he went off to college, I peeled him an apple, just like the old days, went into his bedroom, and read out loud, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” by Dr. Seuss. It was a very corny, “gimme a break, Dad” moment — but he loved it. So did I.

Great show on the Rhones. Love C-du-Papes. Funny thing is: I just got the A-la Milliere – now I can do another simulcam type tasting!! Way to come back with a good, strong performance. I can see that vacation time was well spent. You seem energized! How to go. And go Colts!!! BTW – No QOTD?

    Erik:
Congrats to your new little Vayniac!!! πŸ˜‰
I have two daughters myself. They are now 12 and 9. My advice to you is to NOT let yourself say “I can’t wait until she …(fill in the blank- crawls, talks, walks, etc.)” They grow up way to fast. Enjoy every precious second because it’s gone in a flash. Take lots of pictures and video.

    Gary:
Great to have you back. I really would have loved to see you knock over your set. I would have gone down as the funniest episode ever. In the words of Randy Jackson, “You are the bomb, dog!”

Welcome back Gary. Liked this episode a lot.

Will give some of these a try!

Oh wait… what’s that? Oh… It’s my wife… no money left in the budget for wine in February!

    Darn! I’ll figure something out.

Welcome back Gary! And thanks for the kudos and rooting for the Colts! It should be a great game and you no doubt will have a great time.

    Now back to the wines.

Great show with great enthusiasm. We missed it that’s for sure.

My experience with Rhone wines has usually been hit or miss though it doesn’t bother me since I’m one of those “experimenters” who try a multitude of wines and abide by the EPH of wines. I have always had better luck tasting older vintages of “Chateau of the Pope” wines but I’ll definitely give the anchovy wine a try.

    Salut!
    Dom

    Again, GO COLTS! πŸ™‚

And I almost forgot, my bad, congratulations Erik!

I don’t know of any blogs, websites or books to recommend. All I can contribute is good old advice and that would be to enjoy your little girl because it doesn’t last very long. One minute diapers, the next minute, you’re walking down the aisle giving her away to some guy who doesn’t know the difference between wine and Kool-Aid. πŸ™‚

    Congrats!

  • Erik, some baby recommendations. There are a million things, and everyone has different favorites. But my wife and I found these indispensable:

    1. Snoogle pillow. This saved my wife’s sleep life during pregnancy. It was the only way for her to get comfortable. Best $50.00 I ever spent. http://store.babycenter.com/product/for_parents/maternity_pillows/3784

    2. Books. It’s hard to read lots of books, but you don’t have to read any of them from end to end. Just flip to the section you need at the moment. I highly recommend all of these.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0761125493/qid=1143378420/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-1224569-0804950?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

Baby Bargains. This isn’t just about saving a few bucks. It tells you the best and safest brands of everything. Great for when your wife does the baby registry. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1889392197/qid=1143378582/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-1224569-0804950?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

City Baby LA. From pregnancy classes to early schools, this tells you the best places around town. Really great way for new mommies to get dialed in. Maybe there’s a version for your city in New Jersey or wherever. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0789313472/qid=1143378695/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-1224569-0804950?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

Here’s another great book. It’s a quick read, and it’s for dads – which is rare.

The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips and Advice for Dads-To-Be http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0789205386/ref=pd_bxgy_text_b/102-1224569-0804950?%5Fencoding=UTF8

The next book teaches you great tricks to get the new baby to sleep at night. THANK GOD for this book. (Don’t have to read it until the week before the baby comes, and you can get the gist from a 4 page summary in the book.)

The Happiest Baby on the Block, by Harvey Karp. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0553381466/ref=pd_sim_b_3/102-1224569-0804950?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155

Finally, since everybody does pregnancy their own way, ignore these comments if you want. πŸ™‚
