Bordeaux trip 2007-Update #1

Bordeaux trip 2007 Update

So it is 1:50am here in Bordeaux and the trip is going amazingly well. I have been to Chateau Margaux, Le Gay, Brane Cantenac, Haut Brisson, Reignac and Cos D’estrounel. I am really excited about a lot of the wines I have tasted and I can honestly say I am absolutely floored by the quality of the 2005’s! I am extremely surprised how shockingly good the 2004 and 2006 vintages that I have tasted are. I am very worried that the 2006 prices will be high(which would be too bad since they seem good), the wines seem very strong and the 2006 Cos was a 95-97 point wine but after the huge 2005 futures rush anything short of a 35-50% reduction in price will result in a soft market. The 2004 have been a huge surprise and I am really blown away by the freshness and elegance of these wines and given the prices there will be some real steals. I will not say much about the 2005 except that the 2005 Margaux I had was the best young wine I have ever had and I scored it a 100! I have also been in many meetings tasting wines and have had a few very special dinners with friends. Below are the scores only from the trip so far.

Chateau Margaux 2005—100
Chateau Margaux 2004—95
Cos D’Estrounel 2006—95-97

Chateau Angelus 2004—93
Chateau Montrose 2004—91
Chateau Pontet Canet 2004—94+
Chateau Pichon Lalande 2004—92
Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1962—91 🙂
Reignac 2001—89
Reignac 2002—88+?
Reignac 2003—90
Reignac 2004—90
Reignac 2005—92-94
Balthus 2004—93
Balthus 2005—94-96
Balthus 2006—92-95
Le Gay 2005—98+
Le Gay 2006—93-95

Surprises of the trip so far.

Monbousquet 2002—92 I have had many bad 2002’s on this trip but this has it going on.
Chateau Montviel 2005—92-95 Man is this winery on the rise
Couvent Des Jaconins St Emilion 2000—91 What is this?

I have had many more and at least 200+ that I scored under 86 points, I also had a slew of 1st growths that were older but need to go and look at the notes. I miss you guys. I have a WHOLE lot more tasting coming up!
Question of the Day: What are you doing without WLTV?

The Bordeaux trip sounds GREAT so far, and keep that palate in shape to continue giving us the over-seas review! The written message was needed to get through the beginning of this week, but it isn’t the same without the Vaynervoice, Vaynersquints, and other Vaynerexpressions. I guess it’s worth it if you’re giving so many 2004, 2005, and 2006 Bordeaux wines a Vaynernod.

QOTD: Well yes, we all have plenty to do in our busy lives, but I’m spending a little more time with other vino-related info online with my glass of wine each night instead of WLTV…and then I eventually cry my lonely self to sleep.

Live it up out there, and skip the spit bucket on one for YoungDave!

QOTD: catching up with old episodes of WLTV (from 120 to 150..and after that i’ll be done…but that might take another week, since i’m really taking notes on each episode, analizing them carefully).

Good luck and fun on your trip! The forums have been getting pounded pretty hard, since “sharing” is the only alternative at this point. We look forward to the next WLTV episode!

Are you bringing any of the ’96 Pichon Lalande back? I’ve got one bottle and am hesitant to open it – I probably need a test bottle!

QOTD: Planning my next purchase and first visit to the WL – will be in NJ on business next week and if I can’t get this list below 2 cases, my wife will take my car away…

    Gary,
Thanks for the postcard. I have been suffering through the “DT’s” and trying to ease my pain by re-watching back episodes. Thanks for the fix. You must be in heavan! 0:)

    Insane trip.

I’m going thru the archives while I have a free moment ( since you are offline so to speak ) and catching up. This site is SO SO SO much better than any other wine site I’ve visited so far.

    Really, a special place.
    thanks !

I am happy to hear about the 2004’s as I do think that they will be a steal compared the rest, like other “in between” vintages, there is good wine, you just have to dig!

Hopefully you can give an honest opinion on Ch. Lascombes. I have assembled a vertical of this and plan to keep going as long as the pricing stays in check. I guess as long as Parker only 1/2 likes it it should stay in check and he doesn’t detroy it with a HUGE rating any time soon. I am happy with it pulling 92-94 every year!!!

    Gary,
now that you’re in Bordeaux, I’d like to adress the 100 points-scale, which you, and some other very good analysts use. And I’ve found a similar quirk : the whole note-scale is compressed — I should say crushed — between 85-100. Anything under is almost undrinkable! Now, being french, I followed my scholarity under the 20 points scale : and I remember that anything noted 14 and above whas realy GOOD — and a rare 17 or 18 was close to perfection! Some tasters, and tough ones like Quarin in Bordeaux, use that scale, and with it the same restraint : when they give a 15 (75 on the 100 scale), with a good QPR you could buy the wine blind. Does that mean this scale more sensitive, or is there a tendency, in the 100 scale, to strangely push the users to inflate the numbers…?

QOD – what am I doing with out WLTV….well I use WLTV to relive stress at work, with out WLTV I flipped out on my boss monday and punched him in the face twice. I got fired for this and was arrested on 2nd degree asault charges. I just dropped $5000 for lawer and am not happy about this. The added stress of losing my job and spending a night in jail did not help things with my wife, I got home from picking up some weed yesterday to try to calm my nerves and she took her stuff and the kids and has moved into her mothers house. Things have been bad enough this week that I may just end it all…..

what am I doing with out WLTV….oh just losing my job, my wife and kids, and the respect of my family…thanks

    😉

I’m not one of those people who think that your job is easy, Gary. But it sure sounds fun to travel around Bordeaux and taste all those wines.

I miss my WLTV. I guess you’re not following Bill O’Reilly’s advice to boycott France. Thank goodness. Keep letting us know what you think of the 2005 Bordeaux futures we’ve purchased. Have a great time!

I don’t know if you planned for this or not, but footage of your trips would be incredible to watch. I remember some from Spain, but will we be honored with some Bordeaux scenery? Let us live vicariously thru you, huh?
QOTD: listening to my husband say every nite, “what, no Vay – ner – chuk tonite?” ” No honey, only eyes for you this week…..”
    Safe travel.
