Nice shout outs! It is true, having such an inviting welcome to the forum has made it seem a little less intimidating!

I had my first Super Tuscan the other day at Olive Garden(I know, I know) and that being said, it seems like what was very similar to the Poggio Al Tesoro.. Unfortunately I paid $10 for the glass… I could have thrown a few more “bones” in and bought a bottle of wine instead =-( such is life. At least my splurge for the month included a decent dinner!

“not that I’m the hugest education man” Your sister must be so proud. Are you are she didn’t hit you in the head with a snowball? 😉

QOTD: Bobby Smith, one of the first great American soccer defenders back in the 70’s.

QOTD: Guille Franco; an argentine-mexican football (soccer) player. Among his many epics is that time (dec 05) he scored three minutes before the end of the Monterrey’s derby (Monterrey vs tigres) semifinal leading Monterrey to the big final. One year before, also in a semifinal, he dribled his way to the goal but a defender from the opposing team fouled him hitting him with his elbow to cut Guille’s eyebrow, but still he managed to score, also leading Monterrey to the final against unam. A picture of how he celebrated this last goal can be seen here: http://i.esmas.com/image/0/000/003/911/02_FRANCO_N.jpg

QOTD: For prfessional sports it would have to be Mike Schmidt of the Phillies and for college sports it has to be Joe Paterno.

For some reason I can never get the links Gary has to work on my computer so HAPPY BD Brian and congrats to Gary’s sister Liz from a fellow teacher (9 years) who joined the ranks of educators (like my wife) after retiring from the law/Army.

QOTD: I have to echo Andre Agassi but qualify that with a little bit of Pete Sampras. I can remember watching the final of the 1995 US Open and getting teary-eyed when Sampras won a rediculous point (25+ ball rally) to win the first set against Agassi. Then the next year Sampras throwing up on TV and still hanging in there. Those two guys really elevated my game and gave me endless inspiration.

    Gary,
Great show. I can’t wait to get to Tuscany one day and try all those wonderful wines. Price points a bit high, but I’ll look for them when someone else is buying!! Congrats to your sister, and Happy Birthday to Brandon (emails sent). By the way, don’t let it go to his head, but he does a great job from the customer service end. I’m a Vayniac and a Warniac!!!
QOTD: Al Oerter, Long Island boy done good. Only winner of a gold medal in the same event in 4 consecutive Summer Olympics. A model of consistency, perserverance and devotion.

Nice taste of the Mother Country for this Italian boy today…even if they are all way out of my humble price range.

Oh- and both your sister and Brandon got a little email from YoungDave with my best wishes on your behalf. Let’s hope they don’t get TOO annoyed with all of the others!

QOTD: MY DAD has been a high school coach of multiple sports, a high school athletic director, a lifelong Yankee fan (hey- at least he didn’t just jump on the band wagon within the last 10 years), and an athlete for his entire life. He knows more about sports, both experientially and statistically, than anyone else I know, and I would go to him to get the straight talk about any sports question before asking anyone else.

    Gary – great show!
QOTD – Vince Lombardi – without a doubt. As a 6 year old kid in 1965, I became hooked on the Packer mystique. You gotta love Jerry Kramer’s depiction of the greatest NFL coach ever in his book, “Instant Replay”. He encouraged each player to be not only the best football player they could be, but also the best husband, son, brother, and citizen. He demanded excellence from himself and his coaches and players. His famous quote was a sad mis-quote which should have read, “Winning is not everything, the WILL to win is the only thing!”
