Without a doubt the best two wine library eps ever, i rewatch them at least once a year. If you ever decide to redo a one-off I’d highly recommend doing something like this again, preferably in france since I speak the language lol, but anywhere else would be incredibly welcome!

  • Gary,

I really enjoyed the fact that you didn’t edit this to much. It makes it more real and we get to feel what it is like to be there with you. You looked pretty rough at Chateau Cos D’estourne… late night?
But seriouslly, it was really cool to be along on this ride!

  • Gary, loved the trip show. I watched it all. And while most probably won’t sit through the whole thing, it is great to see what does happen behind the scenes. For those of us who are passionate about wine – it is very cool.

And kudos for whoever was filming. They did a great job with framing everything and mixing it up with zooms and back again.

The one problem with filming was hearing the interpretation of what was being said. Perhaps add sub-titles next time.

    QOTD: this was great Gary.

Simply amazing stuff Gary! Thanks for letting us in on your trip. This just might inspire me to get that wristband picture out to you:-) I can’t even imagine what it must feel like to be sipping wine in the heart of Bordeaux and you taste a wine so obnoxious it makes your knees buckle! The tips about the locations of the Chateaues and their proximity to the first growth vineyards alone are priceless. You really rocked it out. Thanks again and again! I can’t wait until tomorrow (and the arrival ’06 vintage too)!!!

Very cool. Really gives an idea of how special these 05 (and maybe even 06) vintages are. Seeing the look on GV’s face and his reaction when he was at Le Gay was awesome. Can’t wait to see more!

  • Incredible episode. Very informative in many ways. I wanted to make the same remark as some others: it seems like it would be a great advantage to learn a bit of French for these situations. Even basic pronunciation doesn’t take long to learn…

Business-like it is, quite a change, not as perky. Haut Brisson: the most fun, bec/ you could do your own blend, very well it seemed. Le Gay was strange, somehow had the feeling that your host was testing you or maybe he’s nervous. (If so, then the corked bottle did not much to worsen that.) But surely more organized than Haut Brisson, and as such, too bad, more boring. Margaux, D’Estournel and HSL were more boring yet, too much of the action between the ears, little on your face, and none in words. All in all, interesting to see once, but not something to come back and watch again for enjoyment.
Tell us more about what you do tell the winemakers, aside from the instant, relatively cautious winetasting comments. And which winery was more fun to visit for you – nevermind the wine ratings for that purpose.

I enjoyed the first-hand peek as someone who hasnt made it to bordeaux yet. thought the chance to make your own blend was lots of fun. Its got to be a little tougher to give scores when you are looking the guy who made it right in the eye. Dont envy you that (except in a year like 05 maybe – you get off easy).

Enjoyed the episode as something different and an experience we consumers would never get.

Suggestion for your first episode back in the office: tech guys need to edit the video to show your reaction as you tasted each wine, you need to tell us what you were drinking and then we need ratings and current futures prices so we can make decisions on what we are going to buy when we sell our left arm to finance these treasures.

    Louisiana George

ps – If you decide to take the earlier poster’s suggestion of bringing a mic boom man with you on your next trip, pick me!

Thank you for sharing your time in France with those of us who can only dream of a trip like that. I am amazed at how you can go from wine to wine and still be able to differenciate the suttle differences between them. Good for you. Jerry the 2thdr

Hard to hear, but interesting to see the places I’ve only heard of, and since our trip to France just fell through this will have to do for awhile.
Just read an interesting article in the New York Times Style Magazine for Spring by Harold McGee and Daniel Patterson debunking “terroir”. You don’t have to eat dirt anymore in your palate refining classes.

I now know why we are all asked to identify beyond being “lurkers”, Gary proves his following along with purchase power and then goes on this sick trip through Bordeaux. Awesome experience!
To create your own blend was incredible, then the “first taste”, Margaux, by Cos I was thinking Nic Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. Great to see you are human and not exploding and chipper all the time.
Gary, that was great, looking forward to ep.2.

    Gary,
I liked it. i thought it was cool to see behind the scenes. it could have been edited down a little bit, but ill take this episode when you are out of town over some of those 1 wine episodes any day.
It looked really cold in those cellars.
