Good to have you back around Gary! Good episode. For QOTD, I have trouble finding reds that I can really get into, but remember thinking your description of the 2001 Rotllan Torra Reserva made it sound like something I could get into. I looked for it at a couple of local shops, but couldn’t find it. I’ve never found that chocolate aspect you attributed to it.

I’m not advanced enough to really think I could handle anything too advanced, but I have enjoyed some shiraz. The Amon Ra you tasted once looked good. Money is my limiting factor there though.

I guess that’s two answers. Deal with it!

Good topic – Rioja wines are intriguing. What do you mean when you say ” structured” ? interested to hear your definition.
QOTD – some of the Cali cult wines. Harlan, Screamer, Marcassin, Bond, Sine Qua Non. Are they worth the hunt?

I know you’ll be thanking me for this valuable piece of information…..

In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated
that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we
would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli)
bacteria found in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of Poop.

However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine (or rum, whiskey or
other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of
    boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember: Water = Poop, Wine = Health

Therefore, it’s better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water
    and be full of shit.

I’m looking for more Portugese wines Gary.

  • I like all wines and all things…except the Jets and their puke green uniforms. Can’t wait to watch Chadwick on the sidelines w/ his boo-boo’d shoulder in a sling, yet again. Fragile green gumbies!

    Welcome Back!

Way to taste a white wine from 1981. I had a 26 year old trebbiano once, sorry I have since lost the details, which I was totally into. It was about the same color as the Tondonia and had a musty/earthy flavor profile that really interested me. My friend insisted that it was bad, but I was unconvinced because I figured it would probably have a vinegar taste if it was.

Also, I have had the Muga, and thought you were pretty much right on with it. I’m open to most wines, though I would admit to some old world leanings, and I really, really enjoyed this one.

QOTD: So I know you did the Gaja Barbaresco a while back, but how about the Gaja Sori Tilden for a huge nebbiolo fan.

    Hey Gary,

The one wine I would really love to try is a Chateau Margaux from a good year, ’83, ’90, ’96, ’00, ’03, ’05. I’ve tasted all the other 1st growths, but not Margaux. The main wine I am saving for is either one of those vintages or an ’82 Pichon Lalande. Of course, it would be great to try an ’03 or ’04 Pingus, as well.

Of course, I’ll be getting to try some great wines this weekend……including a ’98 and ’01 Cheval Blanc at the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience. It really too bad you couldn’t make it down. There should be some good wines and, of course, good food.

There’s a few wines that I’ve been looking forward to trying that will be poured at the various tastings…..a few producers that I have enjoyed previously that will be present are:

    Chapoutier( love to try the L’Ermite or Le Meal )….Garretson….E. Guigal ….Krug….Verite….Martinelli…..Dom Perignon ( Moet )….Penfolds….Rudd ….Veraison….Taittinger….Joseph Drouhin….Flora Springs….Hartford Ct….Foxen….Robert Keenan….L’aventure….Newton….Joseph Phelps….and Tablas Creek

Of course, there are over a hundred other producers that will be there so I can’t wait to find something else that I like!!!

    Have a great week!

Gary, Great show. I don’t know much about Spanish wines, so this was helpful.
QOTD: Would love to see you taste Duckhorn and associated vinyards = Paradux, Decoy, etc.

    Gary,

Viddler has absolutely sucked lately. It buffers constantly and it is not possible to pause to let the player buffer farther ahead. I know that others have brought up this issue before. Still, just thought I’d let you know that people are having trouble viewing the episodes (yes, I know you can download the episode in quicktime).

  • +I’d really like to try a Gaja barbaresco or “Spress” in its prime.

QOTD: 1982 Dr. Thanisch Bernkasteler Doktor Spatlese. My parents bought it when I was born and we opened it when I graduated college. Amazing copper color, very sweet and rich, coated your whole mouth for a good 2 minutes. Also wish I could try the 2000 St. Veran Les Roches Pointues. The first wine I ever enjoyed, and I considered it my secret find at the time.

Wow, 45 million dollars in a year? That’s a lot of changing the wine world.

I really want to taste the 2005 Bergweiler Bernkastler Badstube Kabinett Riesling. http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=32140

QOTD: I’d like to try some Etude Pinot vs Soter Pinot just to see the difference between Cali and Ore. Any great Burgundy or Bordeaux would be really fun to try as well.

Still very happy for being a top ten for the first time (after many top 20 and 50!!).
QOTD: i always wanted it to try a first cru Bordeaux, but my wallet can’t afford it.
Tonight i’m drinking the Montes Alpha Syrah 2004. Big wine, rich, concentrated with firm tannins, but delicious overall.
Another outstanding episode, and once again, welcome back, Gary!!

HE’S BACK!!! Great Rioja Ep, Señor Big G.

QOTD: I’d love to taste an aged Bordeaux from a classic vintage (such as an ’86 or ’89) because, like the rest of the American public, I tend to drink relatively young wines with no experiences of how bottle age can affect a classic wine. Other than that, I make it a point to never purchase the same wine twice, because the “wine world” that I’m trying to change (with a little help from Big. G.) is a big one… and I’ve only begun to explore it.

Today’s QOTD finally drew out this lurker…

QOTD: Really want to try a world-class riesling. Have tried entry-to-mid level rieslings and haven’t understood the attraction. The descriptions of “racy acidity” make me keep trying. I’m sure I’ve just not had the right one yet.

Maybe this is the one: http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=9844
