Great show as usual and hope you have a great time in L.A. It’s kind of foggy but the jacarandas are spectacular. As far as the QOTW goes I don’t know enough about wine to know what I want. However, the Portuguese wines you were tasting a week or two ago sounded intriguing.

    Hello again.

I have an unopened bottle of Clio at home and all of this Spanish wine talk is making me want to pop it open.

qotd: I have been wanting to taste a killer Bordeaux and this looks interesting…of course I can’t afford it but you said taste, not buy…

I love zins. To try a zin from 1995 that I’ve read plenty about would be awesome. Was also eyeing the Reyes CDP from 1990 but thats in a whole other league.

  • Hey GV
Great episode, I love Rioja, haven’t done much with whites from that region, but love the reds.

QOTD: Screaming Eagle, any vintage but especailly 97. Mostly because I could never afford this and if I did “afford” it, it would be totally for an investment purpose, I would be to nervous to drink it.
On a more really level, I love tasting everything, mostly things that I haven’t heard of before and from that little unknown winery, that you really only hear about word of mouth.

1981 is my birth year, its glad to see a white wine that still hold up, because I’ve had only one 81′ red wine from Chile and it was tired and tasted like cardboard dipped in hot sauce.

QOTD: Any DRC, but in reality I think I would be happy with an older Sauterne. I would love to go to a tasting of these cult wines of Cali like Harlan or Screaming Eagle just to see if they are worth it.

  • Nice episode Gary, great for all of us crazy kids in Spain. I just had the Marques de Caceres 2003 Rioja the other night and was pretty impressed. I will be tasting the middle two of those wines as soon as I get my hands on them. How about making a stop in good old Spain on your way to Greece? While I was watching today, I thought to myself, does he ever have a glass of the mixture in the bucket after the show? How cool would that be, you could totally up the sales by tasting and rating the bucket wine fusion haha.

Hello – been watching for a while and thought I ought to say something. Great episode and very interesting. A big hello to you all!

  • tarheel17

Thanks for the Rioja episode – I love learning about different methods of winemaking and watching you taste several wines from the same area for comparison.
As for the QOTD. . .I’ve always been curious about those cult california cabs. Opus One, Insignia, etc. . .so I, personally, would like to try one to see what all the hoopla is all about. I know you already did that episode, though (And I love it – one of the best!) so as far as I’m concerned, you keep tasting what you want or what others suggest.
If you feel like SENDING me a botle, well then, by all means, do so. =)

good to have you back gary,
brilliant episode. im a big fan of spanish wines and i get the sense many wine drinkers dont hold wines from spain in as high a regard as wines from other countries (i.e. france italy usa). lets change the wine world.

    qotd: two answers
    1. i understand rioja had a spectacular vintage in 1981. to celebrate my birthday next month, i plan to drink the 1981(my birthyear)lopez de heredia bosconia gran reserva.
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=31096
    2. i currently work at a high end steak house and sell people high end cabernet nightly. of the 400 bottles available on our napa-centric list, i find i am most intrigued with dominus, particularly the 2001 vintage.

Great episode Gary. I’m really interested in Rioja wines.

QOTD: Well, I can’t really decide on one, but here are a few that i’ve really wanted to try after watching your episodes. I keep compiling a list of stuff I want to try. Since I’m still learning and I think these would give me a great base to learn more from. These are the top:

2003 Ehlers Estate St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 1886
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=29256

    2001 Chateau Larmande
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=29720

    2004 De Toren Fusion V
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=9648

    2005 Tensley Colson Canyon Syrah
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=9648

Two that your out of that are SUPER high on my list are:

    2003 Ridge Independence School Zinfandel
    2004 Twenty Rows Grappler (!)

    SUPER BOWL XLII
New Orleans Saints vs. New York Jets (call Vegas on this one. Its money)

Rioja is great, but I’d go Ribera del Duero even more, in fact the whole of Spain is one of the most underrated places for top quality juice at a good price. Try out the Rueda whites if you get a chance.

Good to have you back…sorry I’m a day late but glad I only missed the “live” Monday episode instead of the whole week as I was expecting.

To Matthew (last comment) …… I just finished a bottle of the Domaine De La Garrigue Cotes Du Rhone Cuvee Romaine 2005, and it’s quite a value. Although I did like the 2004 better….

QoD – Chateau La Tour Haut Brion 1982 http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=32294
    …. well, you asked.

I just want to know what a “legendary” wine tastes like.
