los angeles – to find out we are not as fake as you lead the others to believe and don’t worry about LAPD i grew up next door to Sheriff Lee Baca (and he got Paris out of jail for a day)

Come to Portsmouth,Va. We have a wine club that has been going strong for over 30 years. We will draw from Norfolk,Virginia Beach, all the way up to Williamsburg and down into Suffolk. The folks around here drink for fun-no wine snobs. We have some really good restaurants also.

72 = 2^3 * 3^2! Okay, I have had the odd gewurztraminer with spicy Indian stuff, but I’ve actually got a glass of chardonnay (unoaked!) while I’m watching this … uh … look! Over there, it’s an oak monster!

    Gary,

I have not tried a Gewurz; but I think I’m ready. Good show. QOTD: The closest major city would be Atlanta. There are really nice wine bars and very good selection of wines there. I’ll have to drive 4 hours; but if you agree to come, I’ll put forth the effort.

  • I’ve been touting the laurels of Gewurz for years! Well done. You just missed the U.S. Grand Prix Formula One race here in Indy. Lots of Euro influenced culture for that one. We have Nascar with the Brickyard in the fall, though it may not be as nice a match! YeeHaw!

Never had a Gewurtztraminer, but you’ve convinced me to try one (as you always seem to manage to do). QOTD – come to Columbus, OH. It is in the middle of the state and it’s close to a lot of other cities. Dayton, Cincinnati, Toledo and Cleveland are all within a couple of hours. Pittsburgh, Erie, Indy, Lexington and Wheeling are only a little further away. I think it could be a big regional draw.

  • I’m pretty broken into Gewurtztraminer, in fact I have a bottle in my cellar as now. Concepción likes it much more than I do. But great show. Watched the show and thought of a nice prawns cocktail with very spicy calipso sauce, and Gewurtz to make it company. QOTD: Concepción said Florida, while I said Boston. We own timeshare in the Custom House (MCU). They have a great private bar in the Mezzanine, which may not be large enough for a Vayniac party, but maybe yes.

  • Hawaii sounds so appealing, but spur of the moment thing would rule me out. Spur of the moment for me is Florida, maybe Houston or Dallas. Even Boston would be a stretch, but I would consider being there.

  • I love Thai and nothing pairs better than gewurz. I like strong litchee and floral aromas / flavors. For those who are looking for a good low cost gewurz to pair with Thai, Columbia Crest makes a decent one for $10.
Hey were’re doing a “summer sipper” wine meetup locally and the theme is Gewurz and Beaujolais. Good timing! Really enjoyed this and the riesling episode.

I’ve never tried a Gewurtztraminer having always thought they were more appropriate for dessert. I love Thai and have usually just gone for some suds. This will be something new to look forward to.

QOTD: If NYC is so easy then what’s the delay?

Love the Gewurtzraminer – glad you pulled out the lychee reference. BTW, does GW actually age well? I’ve only had one older GW and let’s just say it was not good – alcohol and oxidation. Reminded me of when I cleared out my parents fridge. Can anyone say ’91 KJ Chard? Almost as good as the 90 Sutter Home White Zin – a classic year for SH:)

QOTD: Seattle! Though actually if I were you, I would schedule it around a Jets game.

Gary- maybe I’m isolated here in the PNW (a place you should make a point of coming to. Beautiful weather here in the summer!), but the wines I have recently had and enjoyed haven’t been reviewed by you. And I searched.
    loved Silver Lake Riesling
really enjoy Hedges CMS Columbia Valley.
I am also curious to hear how you score the bigger, local wines…but see none rated here (Chateau St. Michelle, Columbia Valley, etc.). What gives?
Thanks for the show, my knowledge is increasing exponentially.

    QOTD – Gary – Only one choice for the fall – Denver. Great weather, great fall color. Lots of wine drinkers. Plus a big connection to the wine biz – Tom Jordan / Jordan Winery; The Duncan’s / Silver Oak;
Denner Winery (Paso Robles – Check out “The Ditchdigger” if you haven’t already – a great
GSM+Counoise). What do they all have in common – Denverites at one point in their lives.
If you come, we will rally the troups & have an awesome time.

    QOTD: Seattle!!
It’s beautiful in September. Come before the rains start, and if you come after, well, we’ll find plenty to do. Seattlites just get wet. It’s no big deal. And just think of the salmon and seafood we’ll have for you!

Also, I love it when you go into characteristics/trivia about the grape you are tasting. Makes me feel like I’m actually ‘learning’ something and not just sipping wine and procrastinating doing something else much less pleasant. Thanks!

My .02; Milk does a body good.

QOTD: Somewhere in Florida or Atlanta

Trimbach always seems to make great wines, I need to get onto some of those Canadian wines.

    VEGAS BABY! VEGAS!
October, 2007….Can you say Vayniac Convention in Las Vegas? Somewhere uber classy, Bellagio? Wynn? Hell yeah, sign me up.
We’ll wine and dine like rock stars and high rollers!

Big up to the Gewurtz… next to Riesling it’s my fave white. It brings so much to the table. Chard and Sauv blanc pale in comparison. Trimbach is a huge producer and is widely available IF your local wine guys know anything about Alsatian wines, thanks for doing the 2000.

  • Thanks for the college kid shoutout!
I’m really startin to like some of the canadian rieslings and gewurtz’s especially from Niagara.
QOTD: seeing as I’m moving to Israel in Sept. I’ll prob. miss your next event but I’ll stay busy and hopefully spread the Vayniac nation throughout the holy land which means eventually you’ll have to plan something for Tel Aviv

I’ve found gewurztraminer is a total hit or miss grape. Either thay nail it and it’s great or it’s a total bomb and not worth drinking. Not much in between in my experience. I always wondered why that is???
