That last wine looked beautiful! Gary, YOU bring the thunder to wine tasting with your enthusiasm and brutal honesty. Oh–favorite cheese of all time? Tough one–any smokey goudas really make me beam like a kid on Christmas morning. I tried some ridiculously good cheese in San Fran–downtown area along the water (the market that has the big clock on it). They have cool vendors inside–especially the cheese shop. Check it out next time you are there. It is called Cowgirl cheeses or something like that!

Yeah that Lafon sounds awesome. QOTD my favorite cheese has to be Parmesian Reggiano.

    • My wife can’t stand when I listen to WLTV too loud, she claims your voice is irritating. I think it’s hysterical that it bugs her and since I was watching the last 3 episodes in bed last night on my laptop she had to watch and/or listen. First, she mockingly moves her head and does the “vay-ner-chuk”. I laugh again. Well, after you get into it and claim the aroma of the first wine is like cat pee she winces and makes a bizarre face. Her interest did get piqued on the 2nd wine, the 2005 Guillaume Gros El Nino Loco Cotes Du Luberon. After your review she said I want to try that one! Gary, I think we may have converted her!

    • QOTD: My favorite cheese to date is cave aged swiss gruyere. Of course I havent had many cheeses to sample from so this may change.

      Gary,

Once again you started the episode referring to the “thunder show” only to start out with an OK non-thunder wine. This is happening more often where you start the show excited only to be let down; sometimes all of the wines are a disappointment with no thunder at all.

What do you think of changing your approach where wines that rock get the thunder (maybe with lightening bolts) and wines that disappoint get the pass (with 14 ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZâ??s).

Just a thought, love the show!!!!!!!

Now that you are back from Greece are you going to do a show on Greek whites (like those from Sanotrini)?

Interesting contrast of the Cotes Du Luberon & Sebastiani. Thanks to the show we can enjoy both. Not because we’re being told what to like and not like, but because we are exposed to both.

Joe Namath is NOT the reason most of us watch football today. Guys like Ben Davidson who pound quarterbacks like Namath into the ground are why we watch! (For some great Raiders pix: http://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/159985/slideshow.html)

QOTD: Brie cheese, love the creaminess and to spread it on sourdough bread.

    • I’m a simple man for simple cheese. Sharp cheddar, but the blends you find in Swiss colony sets and as cheese cubes in stores are my fav with a good Merlot or Cab.

      Keep Bringin’ the Thunda!

Since this was a Wine Request show, I’ll once again call for my own request: a tasting of Tablas Creek Esprit du Beaucastel red and other California Rhone blends and how they stack up to the great S. Rhone wines.

Favorite cheese? Great sharp cheddar cheeses especially from raw whole milk.

More cheese please! One of my favorites is Midnight Moon, a goat’s milk from Cypress Grove. Buttery salted caramel goodness.

So, GV, what with the “Thunder Show” intro? Beginning your separation from the Wine Library “brand”?? Sort of like how football players do it? Step 1-appear in full uniform, pads and all. Step 2-jersey and pants, no pads. Step 3-just the team jersey. Fially, the big time-regular clothes, maybe holding a football at first……

QOTD: Not a big cheese guy, but when I do partake, I usually enjoy a nice, hard crumbly, salty parmigiano or similar.

QOTD: I would say itâ??s a tossup between the good olâ?? String Cheese and Kraft Singles.
On a serious noteâ?¦ have you ever tried any of the cheeses you have reviewed (or any others) in a grilled cheese sandwich paired with wine. I have heard it can make a great, quick, simple meal?

    • RobH

      lurking no more
watching semi-regular since Scott Simon’s interview on NPR
love the QPR idea and finding great wines at more modest sensible prices
      love the ss chris spreadsheet
thanks for the goat cheese too

Lurker in the weeds no more! Love the show, great concept. I would rather go to a wine chat than a book chat any day!

QOTD: Aged Gouda, the older the better… talk about old world style… had a 10+ year old gouda once… carmel-like, with unbelievable texture… you occasionally come across little, almost crystalline pockets that introduce earthy/salty components to the flavor.

This was my first viewing of your show. You have a very dramatic personality which makes you interesting to watch. You also seem very knowledgeable on the subject of wines. I enjoyed the variety of the 4 bottles you tested today, not just the type, but also the region. We, my husband and I, recently purchased a 7 year old vineyard, all reds, in the Finger Lakes, and am spending most of our free time learning all we can about viticulture and wines. We will not be moving up to the vineyard full time until next year, so we have given ourselves 2 years to learn the business. I will watch your show again. I read about you in Wine Business Monthly.

Try fried asiago cheese with your wine. Make sure is crusts on both sides with a soft center. You won’t believe how well it goes with wine. I like it with full bodied reds. It is great! My favorite wine companion.

That Niño Loco sounds great! Up my alley!

QOTD. Tough choice! In the end I’d probably end up choosing a washed rind cheese. Munster, Epoisses, Livarot,… The stinkier the better! A good Gorgonzola Dolce, or cave aged Gruyere, or aged goat, or Spanish Torta del Casar, or Peccorino Truffato, or…. I want to go back to Artisanal in NYC!!!!!

QOTD: Since I have to battle my weight all the time I don’t get to eat cheese all that often. Usually, I only eat it if we are having wine. The cheese I like then, really depends on the wine I am drinking, more than the cheese itself.

QOTD, My everyday cheese to go with my everyday wine has to be Vermont Colby Extra Sharp Cheddar. A fantastic combination for me the other day was a ripe Wisconsin Blue Cheese with a beerenauslese style Riesling. Fantastic!
