Congrats Tim! Go Twinkies!

I have not had an agliaglioxenfree. “Il” is said like “eel” in Italian btw. Not that I expect everyone to pronounce foreign words correctly, but if I can spread some knowledge then I'm going for it.

QOTD: I had a St. Croix from Winehaven. It was pretty good. Not too acidic and not too inky. It was a little thin but I think they did a great job with a difficult grape.

  • I hope I am inspired to an American wine for the fourth, but I am not so sure. We’ll see what I feel like decanting when I wake up tomorrow morning.

Happy holiday, all. America is important. Without it, all the things we enjoy would lose meaning.

    Never take it for granted.

Congratulations TimF! Have a great time with Gary.

Wow, just when you thought you’d heard of every grape and wine possible, you learn you haven’t scratched the surface. Thanks Gary for continuing to introduce new and exciting wines.

QOTD: I’m going to an outdoor wedding in Coloma, CA where it is expected to get to 103. I’ll be drinking a dry Riesling, Clean State!

Aglianico (ah-LYAH-nee-koe) is a red wine grape grown in the Campania and Basilicata regions of Italy. The grape is believed to have originated in Greece, introduced to Italy by the Phoenicians around the same time as the Gaglioppo vine.

Wines produced from Aglianico tend to be full bodied with firm tannins and high acidity making this a wine that has aging potential. The rich flavors in Aglianico make it conducive for matching with rich meats such as lamb.

Love Aglianico!! I have 6 bottles of the Il Viola, and there is definately some bottle variation. I think they need at least 5 more years to shine. I also applaud your call for wines to taste like where they came from!! Hooray for obscure varietals!

Aww … (sniff) first wine I ever picked up there was the ’01 Tenuta le Querce. I might even have one left. Dirty ten-four percent, represent!

QOD: something American, I imagine. If there were more like the one I had this weekend, I’d drink it a lot more often. Maybe I have some California cab franc lying around, that might be fun.

Great ep. Great topic. I tried aglianico earlier this year and did not care for the bottle I had. I’ll give Coviv a try.

QOTD: Gots to drink American baby. Going with a 2000 BV GDL. I’ll let you all know how it tasted in the What are you drinking? forum. Happy 4th!!!

    Ciao

    GV,
My wine education continues, thanks. Will have to add this to the list of things to try.
QOTD: Having Hofmann’s Coneys on the grill, with a nice American Red Zin. Red wine, white dogs, just have to find something blue to go with it!

Were you referring to Frankie “Sweet Music” Viola?

  • sonicgg

Aglianico is my go-to pizza wine. I’ve found it to be consistently underpriced for the value which means even in the less-than-ten range you can find really good juice.
Eric Asimov of the NY Times also mentioned agli’ and ‘za recently:

    http://thepour.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/07/02/una-pizza-napoletana/

Already July 4 here and not a holiday so maybe just a glass of Hugel Gewurtz after work…

  • QOTD – After Pinot Days this weekend, I’m making sangria from 18 half-full bottles of Pinot Nior. Take that Sideways!

Congrats Tim! Cheers and happy 4th!
