I have told anyone who would listen that the best cabernet I have had in the past few years is the 2001 Beringer Reserve so this would be my first choice.

You got my juices flowing with those Super Tuscan tastings. It’d be great if you tasted the 2004 Sette Ponti Oreno for us.

Missed you in Napa but my wife and I had a great time nevertheless. What a great night to be there, not too hot and beautifully green with the vines at full throttle.

    Ciao

Nice episode. I have yet to try an Amarone. On the list for sure.

QOTD: I have been stocking up on 2001 Brunello’s and would like your take on what I think could be a good value for BDM:

Good episode today It’s a shame none of the Amorones really brought it today.QOTD Penfolds Grange 2002 http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=32313 or another vintage if you have it. I’ve always wanted to try it, and I will, But 200+ bones not exactly your everyday sipper. So I’d like to see what you have to say about this Aussie legend. Thanks in advance

Great ep! Would love to try an Amorone glad I got your opinion on them.

QOTD: 2000 Prunotto Barolo…one of my favorites or how about Maculan 2004 Pinot & Toi, nice blend…like both of them, don’t know if you sell them or not but you should.

    you rock!!

  • Chris G

DO A VERMENTINO! GO ON! DO A VERMENTINO!

    (or rolle)

  • GenericGuy

QOTD: Wine library doesn’t carry it, but I highly recommend you try the sparkling Cava “Miret Extra Dry”. Sells locally in the Dallas area for $6.99 and is a huge value for the price.

  • Excellent show idea today. When I first began my entry into wine two years ago, I was focused entirely on Italian wines – mostly because I was about to travel to Tuscany and I was already obsessed with anything Italian. Since getting plugged into WLTV however, I have greatly expanded my wine worldview, but there’s always going to be a place in my heart for the great Aglianicos, Super Tuscans, Brunellos, Barolos…etc. of the world.

One thing that caught my interest today was that you mentioned how much you like gnocci and exotic meats such as wild boar. But looking back a few months, you mentioned you weren’t a big fan of Italian quisine. That’s an interesting contrast, because in Toscana, they are really big on roasted game such as boar, pheasant, rabbit, duck, quail, and even pidgeon.

And let me tell you about the cheese! (you probably allready know everything I’m saying so don’t feel like I’m lecturing you) One of the greatest marriages of flavour in my opinion is that between aged parmagiano reggiano and porcini mushrooms or truffles. There is an almost haunting element of nuttiness and earthiness in this flavor profile that cannot be truely expressed authentically with anything other than an Old World style Italian red wine. (sour cherry heaven)

So, with that said, I prefer Northern Italian quisine myself, and I think you would probably too, if I’m correct in guessing you’re not a huge fan of the heavy tomato sauces smothered on pasta in Southern Italy, or perhaps in New York – there is a big difference between “Americanized” Italian food and authentic Italian food. At its essence is creativley combining ingredients in a simple fashion, letting the main ingredients’ true flavors shine through without having to compete with heavy sauces or excessive seasonings. And in Toscana, it’s all about rustic meat like rabbit stewed all day long in Brunello di Montalcino!

And this leads me into the QOTD: I’d like you to taste the “Pieve Del Vescovo Tezio 2002,” even though you have rated it, but not on the show itself (keeping with the Italian theme). If you refuse, you cannot refuse “Chateau La Vieille Cure Fronsac 2003,” 92 points Robert Parker – Bordeaux… TWENTY TWO BONES!!!!!!!! (but not in your store)

I hope your travels don’t tire you too badly,

    Garret

Had their Pinot Noir in Vegas a while ago with my then GF, now wife and also had a bottle for our wedding. Am wondering if their other wines are any good now that the Pinot has tripled in price.

    White:

Same reason as above. This place holds a special place in my wine heart and would like to hear what someone else thinks.

Also, both are pretty affordable for most people to try out.

Amarone, my first ever “Big wine” experience (Masi Costasera). As for Ripasso, hmmmm, Ripasso……. (and got a Joseph “Moda” from Australia as well, Cab-Sauv & Merlot in “Amarone style”).

QOTD – It’s still a baby, but how about the 2004 Montecastro? (code 32249), I’d be curious to see how you find it ‘cos I loved it.

Unfortunately, I think all those Amarone’s were too young to strut their stuff. I have a ’97 that I believe is just ready and I’m about ready to give it a try as I haven’t had an Amarone before.

I haven’t had an Amorone, but I did try some gnocchi while visiting Sonoma. I wasn’t impressed with the dish, but maybe if I went to an authentic Italian restaurant and had it with an Amorone….?

QOTD: Please try Klinker Brick zinfandel!!! ( http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=5574 ) This little fruit-bomb is grown and fermented in my backyard (sort of), Lodi California. This zinfadel reminds me of Layer Cake shiraz: big bold fruit explosion only with zinfandel! I’d love to get your impression.

Side-note: I caught Gary on NPR this weekend as he was talking about all the hype over the 2005 Bordeaux. It made up for not getting my Vaniac fix on Monday. Cat pee rules! 🙂

Great episode GV; Amarone is also one ofmy favorite Italian wines…although I’m not sure that I’ve ever had a really good one. The only one that I’ve had is from Trader Joe’s; it’s only $13.99 and absolutely delicious.

Please taste, if you will, the 2005 Carlisle Dry Creek Zinfandel
