Interesting show, will definitely seek Shriaz Viognier out.

QOTD: Almost everything else has been taken so we’ll try something different… Tawny Port and Sauternes!

  • Yay! SF Vaynerglass!

QOTD: Well, you’re in Hungary right now, so how about mixing some Furmint (dry) with Cab Franc (and maybe throw in a little Grenache or something to balance it out)? Heh…I have no idea what I’m doing. I come from an area of the country where most wine drinkers mix their vino with Coke.

That pipe tobacco sounds yummy! I might just see if I can track that wine down.

  • Hey Gary

A great example of this type of blend from South Africa is the Cape Rock Shiraz/Viognier – very hard to find and a bit of a cult wine – btu it was beautiful – the Viognier really gave it a lovely delicate perfumed nose!

    Magic!

QOTD: One of the most interesting QOTDs to date…
Ok- perhaps a little Gewurtz. and Muscat blend: the spice (ginger, clove, white pepper, floral notes) of the Gewurztraminer with the unmistakable sweeter “grape” and floral explosive nose of a Muscat. Better yet, how about Muscat and the cat pee and grassy nose and sharp acidity of a Sauv. Blanc? I dunno- I’m no Doctor…(sorry, that’s just something a good friend of mine says all the time…even when it makes no sense.)

    Dear Gary,
I hope you took a camera, cameraman/w/camera, and/or AC with you to Hungary. I know it’s hot there and people are dying, but, I for one, would love to see some shots and/or video of what it’s like to be there.

What’s the weather’s effect on the wine, and how are people “stayin’ alive” during the heatwave?

Of course, we all have seen this:

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article2134086.ece

and are worried about you… “drinking wine when it’s hot outside”

    and this:

    http://trent.blogspot.com/2007/07/double-trouble.html

remembering the trouble you got into when you visited w/Hollywood last May.

Anyways Gary, love you brother and have a safe trip.

Great episode. Thanks for the Cote Roti in GaryIsSorry and for this look into these wines.

QOTD: 2 thoughts, one mainstream and another way out there…
    (1) Cabernet Sauvignon and viognier … same idea as with Shiraz to add some bouquet to a big strong red grape
    (2) Marsanne and Lacrima … as a rose where the Marsanne would provide the structure and rich foundation and the Lacrima would add floural notes and the color

Zinfandel and Tocai Friulano… Sounds like it’d be good to me.

Thanks for putting out another great episode. Thanks for the funny string of “Gary is sorry” episodes- those characterizations successfully jab at wine pretense.
Recently I enjoyed Changala’s 2002ish Syrah that had approx 10% viogner in the mix. Do many Califorian Syrahs have V in the mix?

Lastly, how about Petit Syrah with a splash of Chenin Blanc, or Carmenere with Torrentes?

It has to be Cabernet and a Sauternes might get along pretty well.

Great show today, nice quality wines. I will seek them out for sure. Are they just listed under Shiraz on menus?

QOTD: Malbec & Torrontes. Argentina could have a taste sensation. You wouldn’t need much Torrontes to add a wild flavor to the otherwise dark, reserved Malbec grape.

  • I.B.

An interesting “new” red/red blend would be (Burgundy grown) Pinot Noir and (South-Rhone grown) Grenache Noir. A minor dose of Grenache would bring a pleasant softness and friendliness to the wine – without overpowering the Pinot Noir/Burgundy characteristics.

Have to look for the Terlato/Chapoutier – tough to find Chapoutier wines around me (that aren’t $$$$$$).

QOTD: 65% Petit Verdot, 25% Merlot, 10% Albarino.

QOTD: Oh goody, time for us to be chemists! My blend would have to be syrah and sauvignon blanc. Heck, throw in a bit of malbec too!
