Isn’t Mer Soleil from Santa Lucia Highlands (Monterey County) rather than Napa?

  • Harley Stan

Gary, great show today, I just bought some chardonnay because it was unoaked, I have not tried it yet, but I will.

BTW, the last time Gary wanted to achieve a certain number of responses, (300, I think) we beat his number but I don’t remember if he ever told us what the bet was. Anyone?

GV- Awesome episode. I see this as a trend that WILL change the wine world. I think naked chards will increase in popularity and as they do winemakers will gradually start re-introducing wood into their wines but as a seasoning and not the main component of the dish.
QOTD: 80% with food, 20% without food (10% of that being with clients). God my job is tuff. KEEP THE THUNDER ROLLING!

  • phermented1

    I meant tough.

QOTD: 90% with food, 10% without food. Heck I even eat almost all the time when I am drinking beer (nuts, beef jerky, chicharones, buffolo wings, etc.). The only alcoholic drink that i usually don’t eat food with are cocktails, but i hardly drink those at all.

man, and I wanted to hold out for a bit on buying more wine, now I’m gonna have to go out and check out the Four Vines, 🙂

QOTD: I’m probably at 98% drinking without food. I like drinking wine just on its own. Part of that though is that when I go out, I normally don’t like the wine selections and I rarely cook for myself. If I cooked for myself, I’d probably drink more with food

Hey Gary. That was a good show — I’m not a huge white wine fan, but was convinced to have a 2005 Miner Wild Yeast Chardonnay with Indian food a week ago. It was okay, but still not a favorite. I’ll give the Four Vines a try, though.

Show notes: the moobie thing was weird, but you did manage to wink out of both eyes on this episode. so you redeemed yoruself.

Video notes: i look amazingly like Miss Piggy so no videos/photos of me, but I will try to think of something clever.

QOTD: 95% – 97% of the time with food. even if we go to a wine bar, we always order cheese or salami with it. the only time i am having wine w/o food is when i am cooking the food i am about to have with the wine.

Good show. Yeah bring the thunder with the intro instead of Mr. Oxford. Long Island has a bunch of wineries using stainless steel. Maybe you can try them. QOTD 75/25 since I almost always drink wine with my dinner.

  • Hey Gary,

Long time between drinks. Things have just been pretty hectic and I should make more of an effort to fit your shows in.

I am surprised that you mentioned the movement to unoaked chardonnay in Australia and NZ but then didn’t showcase any examples from these regions.

I know Stanley Lambert sell their ‘Pristine’ Chardonnay up your way for all your US viewers (see: http://www.stanleylambert.com/index.cfm?method=storeproducts.showDrilldown&productid=31dbc1f0-ae8c-252e-32ed-7723afdb3fb4&ProductCategoryID=a682eea4-f93b-ef59-7ac1-e2d7c9896632&OrderBy=Price1%20Asc) for Australian viewers (see: http://www.squashedgrape.com.au/tcontrol/product_details.php?pcode=132).

I agree that this is a growing trend. I know personally I had moved over to drinking a lot of Viognier as a substitue for a white with substance but without the oak monster!

    QOTD – 50/50

Hope you reach your 700 comments… And I will do a video intro… One day…

  • Thanks for the show, A haven’t had a California chardonnay in a minute because of the “characteristics”. I have been subbing blends with my food in place of chardonnays during this time as well. I am excited to explore some new options.
