I happened upon a Sea Smoke botella 2005. Bought it! Wow!
No band-aid though. Lovely, lovely. Thanks. I like your enthusiasm.

I like how you bring out that price is not necessarily the only factor when considering quality in wine. This weekend I think my son and I are going to take the 65 mustang up to Hot August Nights and open a Pinot Noir that Scheid vineyards just sent me.

Just got an email letter from a Vancouver wine shop I go to and they just got in some of the Sea Smoke Ten. $137 Canadian. Just a tad outta my price range.
This weekend I looking to open an Italian red. Casanova di Nero Rossa di Montalciano. The little baby brother to WS wine of the year.

How generous for you to pour from your private collection; I’m holding on to my Sea Smoke, so at least now I have an idea of what’s in store. I had no trouble getting on the mailing list last year(after your episode it may be harder.) Great folks to deal with; very customer oriented. In fact, I got a second offering when some of the 2005 allocation was unclaimed.

QOTD: Tonight we’re having 2005 Wolf Trap and 2004 Concannon Petite Sirah (with grilled burgers). We’re trying to put together a case of wine each for a niece and a nephew (CKCs until very recently), and the idea is to try to persuade them that good wine doesn’t have to be expensive, i.e., that they can afford to be wine drinkers. So we’re checking out some of the less expensive wines that you reviewed favorably. Any suggestions for wines to include would be welcome.

OK, I have been called out! I’ve been lurking for months, but have never posted a reply to an episode.

I was lucky enough to try some Sea Smoke when I was in the area a couple of months ago – can’t remember which one it was (I have notes somewhere), but I remember it bringing the most elegant of thunder.

Oh, and QOTD: I’m doing “beers of the world” this weekend: Tasmania, Austria, Italy, Canada, Frances and Belgium. Back to wine soon enough, I anticipate…

  • Alright! Sea Smoke in the SF Vaynerglass! I suppose it’s appropriate: Sea Smoke is one of the wines the crowd at the SF party seemed to enjoy the most. I didn’t get a chance to sample it myself though, so I’m really glad you did it on the show.

QOTD: This weekend I’ll be scrambling to finish up my term paper, so I’m not likely to open anything fantastic unless I manage to finish more quickly than I anticipate. However, once I’m done, I’ll be popping the Corte Riva 2003, the Dopff & Irion “Les Sorcieres” 2003, and the 2006 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling, all within the next week. You see, many of my friends are leaving for college soon, so I’ll be opening one special bottle after another to enjoy with them before they leave. I really wish WineLibrary would resume shipping to NV soon. I’d have many more great bottles to choose from if you could ship the orders you’re currently holding for me. I got a call from you guys not too long ago saying that one of my futures had arrived, and I had to ask them to wait for a few more months. Boy, I’m gonna have a helluva lotta great wine all at once when you guys resume shipping!

By the way, do you guys know why Gravater images aren’t showing up anymore on the WLTV site?

Nice Pinot Noir horizontal. I’m impressed. Pinot Noir has to be the biggest crapshoot in the wine world. My last two were busts. I had a highly touted Land’s Edge Vineyards 2005 from Hartford Court that was mediocre at $25 bills. I had an entry level Bourgogne from the respected Bertrand Ambroise who makes a mean Nuit St. Georges but it was also a pass at $25. I’m keeping the faith and looking toward Central Otago for salvation. Maybe I just have to up the ante to find the one…Willamette Valley has always been good to me. Pommard and Vosne Romanee are the source of my addiction so why have I strayed? I’m waiting to taste the Pinots from Sojourn Cellars in Sonoma Valley who brought the crack….boom with their high QPR Cabernet.

Have a good time in SF and proudly represent the right coast for us. I’m sure all of your hard work will pay off handsomely.

I’m swilling some Bordeaux Superieur from Cheval-Quancard which is working with the home grilled 80/20 burgers. Everyone enjoy the weekend..Peace out.

So I finally get to see the famous Sea Smoke I’ve been reading about. Too bad they’re not available in this part of the world (or at least I haven’t seen them yet).

QOTD: Mas des Bressades Costieres de Nimes

It’s nice to talk about these cult/hard-to-get wines but unless it’s easy to get ANY wines, I just don’t have the time and bones. 40-50-70? Please. No one will touch any of these wines for less than $100.

Give me Oregon Pinot for less than half the price. Heck, Beaux Freres is less than Sea Smoke and I have yet to see you reviiew BF!

QOTD: What am I drinking this weekend? Let’s see, I will be attending a friend’s 60th birthday parfty who devours Michelob so I’ll go with (I was hoping to have a Naked Chard but did not arrive) a nice German Riesling. Maybe Karl Erbes? Of course, I’ll bring a Ken Wright Pinot (you should try one) as my “on the porch Niles-time” wines when everyone has left. Sideways fans know what I mean.

Have a great weekend everyone and TGIF!

    Cheers!

P.S. What happened to our gravatars?

Father it has been 1 day since my last post. Forgive me! I was a lurker for far too long. QOTD: Heard some good things about Washington wines so I’m going to try out a few Chateau Ste. Michelles (seems to be a popular one): a chardonnay, a merlot, and a riesling.

    Gary,

Love the show, I have been lurking for a few months now. I evangelize about you all the time, and I really need a wristband to show my colors.

Nice work on the Sea Smoke, makes my mouth water!

Love seeing the episodes for wine that I cannot get. Glad you get to drink it all. Living through you……

QOTD- Drinking Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel. Nice summer wine.

  • John B

I am a new viewer and thoroughly enjoy your show. I am also a ten-dollar wine person ($12 when I splurge). I hope to venture into the real-good bottle realm someday but that is still a dream. I find it fun to look for good wines in my price range. Going to the hardware store and wine store are 2 of the simple pleasures in life. Thanks for your insight, time and fun.

What’s that Warren Zevon song . . . .”Excitable Boy”????
Cool episode. I enjoy Sea Smoke and am sorry I wasn’t quick enough to buy my 2005 allocation.

Amazing wine – how sweet the taste . . .
I once was lurking, but now am found.
Once blind, but now I see.

QOTD – A Loring 2005 Close Pepe Pinot, a 1997 ZD Cabernet, and a 2005 Ken Wright Celio Vineyard Chardonnay. But not all necessarily at the same time.

    What are you drinking?
blood from the neck of a lurker????
